The Loft at 10 East 23rd Street in New York City is hallowed grounds for KISS fans. Rented as a rehearsal area and sometimes crash pad by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley in Mid 1972, they would audition for a drummer and lead guitarist and by Christmas time of that year KISS was born. The band would not only hone the musical aspect but also the visual representation that all considered of the utmost importance. At first they took inspiration from the up and coming New York Dolls and had a look that bordered on drag, thankfully the idea blossomed that would give way for Kabuki style make up and costumes of black. By March 1973 the band had called in a favor and got Eddie Kramer to record a demo for them and they started playing select venues. Recently a crude soundboard recording finally surfaced of the band playing a Long Island club called the Daisy, prior to that summertime run of shows Gene Simmons would record the band while rehearsing for the gigs. Reportedly done with a 2 track tape deck the resulting recording is an excellent document to further understand the evolution of KISS’ rise to stardom in the mid 70's.

The amateur recording is clear and the instruments are fairly well balanced, they all can be heard with emphasis on Paul’s guitar if anything. The vocals are low in the mix and much of Paul’s signing is barley audible during Strutter and Firehouse. There is some top end distortion present but overall it is not only more than listenable it is highly enjoyable and must be considered a companion piece to the Daisy show. The recording picks up with some tune ups and the band plows into Strutter. As like the Daisy show it’s all there but too busy for lack of a better word. It would be refined and simplified by the time the band entered the studio to begin recording the first record. Even in this stage it has all the swagger of the classic we all love, Ace’s solo is slightly different but really good, it has a laid back feel to it.

There is some muffled conversation at its conclusion and either a tape cut or pause and Paul plays a little of the Firehouse riff while they get ready. Again Firehouse is slower with the tempo being slightly off, Gene plays a nice fat bass but the song really drags. Ace’s solos are busy but the lyrics are close to being done and Whew Whos are there. Curiously Watchin’ You is very close to the version that would be released on Hotter Than Hell, this version more than makes up for the Daisy recording where the song suffered from tape warble. Let Me Know is one of Paul’s earliest songs, during this era it was referred to as Sunday Driver and while it was released on the first KISS during this time it is in need of some tightening up.

One of the curiosities of the Daisy tape was getting to hear Life In The Woods, even though two versions are listed the first take is quickly abandoned after 15 seconds. The vocals are a bit better in the mix and we get to hear Peter’s unmistakable voice. In Paul Stanley's biography, I felt he kind of berated Peter’s playing, while he would struggle at being a technically perfect drummer this clearly shows how powerful a player he was and more than makes up for it with passion. He does some MC during the middle of the song and starts a chorus of “Fuck You “, he mentions The Daisy as they are in obvious preparation of the June 1973 gigs there. While the song is certainly not a contender to put on a recording it does serve to get the audience rocking. Another highlight of the tape is Acrobat, commonly referred to as Love Theme From KISS. Thankfully the song is linked with Your Much Too Young and is a real barn burner, Peter gets a quick mini solo and the band sounds almost like they are jamming a bit as they lock in and really pound out the main riff and Ace rips a classic solo. At the song’s conclusion all that is left to do next is push play and do it all again.

While the recording is a short 35 minutes, the content more than makes up for it. I was reading one web site and they claim this tape and the Daisy gig were released by someone close to the band during this time.

Le Loft au 10 East 23rd Street à New York est un lieu sacré pour les fans de KISS. Loué comme zone de répétition et parfois crash pad par Gene Simmons et Paul Stanley au milieu de 1972, ils auditionnaient pour un batteur et un guitariste principal et à Noël de cette année-là, KISS était né. Le groupe n'affinerait pas seulement l'aspect musical mais aussi la représentation visuelle que tous considéraient de la plus haute importance. Au début, ils se sont inspirés des New York Dolls en plein essor et ont eu un look qui frisait le drag, heureusement l'idée a fleuri qui céderait la place au maquillage de style Kabuki et aux costumes noirs. En mars 1973, le groupe avait demandé une faveur et demandé à Eddie Kramer d'enregistrer une démo pour eux et ils ont commencé à jouer dans certaines salles. Récemment, un enregistrement grossier de la table d'harmonie a finalement fait surface du groupe jouant dans un club de Long Island appelé le Daisy, avant cette série de spectacles estivaux, Gene Simmons enregistrerait le groupe tout en répétant pour les concerts. Apparemment réalisé avec un magnétophone à 2 pistes, l'enregistrement qui en résulte est un excellent document pour mieux comprendre l'évolution de l'ascension de KISS vers la célébrité au milieu des années 70.

L'enregistrement amateur est clair et les instruments sont assez bien équilibrés, ils peuvent tous être entendus en mettant l'accent sur la guitare de Paul. Les voix sont basses dans le mix et une grande partie de la signature de Paul est à peine audible pendant Strutter et Firehouse. Il y a une certaine distorsion haut de gamme, mais dans l'ensemble, ce n'est pas seulement plus qu'écoutable, c'est très agréable et doit être considéré comme un compagnon du spectacle Daisy. L'enregistrement reprend avec quelques mises au point et le groupe se lance dans Strutter. Comme pour le spectacle Daisy, tout est là mais trop occupé faute d'un meilleur mot. Il serait affiné et simplifié au moment où le groupe entrerait en studio pour commencer à enregistrer le premier disque. Même à ce stade, il a tout le fanfaron du classique que nous aimons tous, le solo d'Ace est légèrement différent mais vraiment bon, il a une sensation décontractée.

Il y a une conversation étouffée à la fin et une bande est coupée ou une pause et Paul joue un peu du riff de Firehouse pendant qu'ils se préparent. Encore une fois, Firehouse est plus lent avec un tempo légèrement décalé, Gene joue une belle grosse basse mais la chanson traîne vraiment. Les solos d'Ace sont chargés mais les paroles sont sur le point d'être terminées et Whew Whos est là. Curiously Watchin' You est très proche de la version qui sortira sur Hotter Than Hell, cette version compense largement l'enregistrement de Daisy où la chanson souffrait d'un warble de bande. Let Me Know est l'une des premières chansons de Paul, à cette époque, elle était appelée Sunday Driver et bien qu'elle soit sortie sur le premier KISS à cette époque, elle a besoin d'être resserrée.

Un autre point fort de la bande est Acrobat, communément appelé Love Theme From KISS. Heureusement, la chanson est liée à Your Much Too Young et est un véritable brûleur de grange, Peter obtient un mini solo rapide et le groupe sonne presque comme s'ils jouaient un peu alors qu'ils se verrouillent et battent vraiment le riff principal et Ace déchire un classique solo. À la fin de la chanson, tout ce qui reste à faire est de pousser la lecture et de tout recommencer.

Bien que l'enregistrement ne dure que 35 minutes, le contenu compense largement. Je lisais un site Web et ils prétendent que cette cassette et le concert de Daisy ont été publiés par une personne proche du groupe à cette époque.

Recorded and mixed by Eddie Solon on a nine-channel 27 input Peavey Sound System. In KISStory the date 8/25/73 is attributed, though the authors of "KISS Alive Forever" suggest that the date is incorrect; due to one of Paul's raps mentioning Father's Day (which would have fallen on 6/17/73).
This and the partially surviving second set are probably the earliest surviving KISS live audio recordings. Only "Acrobat" has been released from this show, on the 2001 Box Set, the rest of the SBD recording leaked on 12/21/2013.
