Off The Soundboard - Live In Pooghkeepsie - 28.11.1984 Kiss-o12

Gene Simmons l’a dit récemment.

KISS – Off The Soundboard: Live In Poughkeepsie, NY 1984

Off The Soundboard - Live In Pooghkeepsie - 28.11.1984 Kisspo10

Now here’s something for KISS fans to really sink their claws into. The fifth in the Off The Soundboard series, Live In Poughkeepsie, NY 1984 features the short lived lineup of founding members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons with Eric Carr and Mark St. John on the Animalize Tour. This release stands out for two reasons – Mark only played three shows with the band which makes this a rarity and finally Eric Carr gets his just due being featured on a live album. For these reasons alone, it’s a must have for any hardcore KISS fan.

To set the scene for this soundboard’s date – November 28, 1984, Mark was sidelined with a hand injury so soon to be official member Bruce Kulick was in his stead as KISS went through Europe in September and it wasn’t until November 27 when Mark got his first chance at the stage, playing half a show in Baltimore. Heck, by the time Mark got up there, it might have already been decided that Bruce was going to be the guy going forward. And it probably was as St. John would play just one more show with KISS before Bruce took over for good.

So maybe it was nerves, pressure, lack of rehearsal time, or his hand not being fully healed, but Mark is all over the place; he’s clearly more comfortable with the “shreddier”, Vinnie Vincent-era tracks and not so much with those classic ‘70s licks. His guitar sound is a bit thin and could use more distortion, but he’s in the zone on Animalize cut “Under The Gun” as well as the thunderous “War Machine” and “Creatures Of The Night”. But then there’s “Detroit Rock City”, where the missing distortion sticks out and “Love Gun” is totally butchered and “Black Diamond” isn’t great either.

The true star is Eric Carr who is an absolute menace behind the kit and amplifies the ‘70s material while letting loose on the current songs. It’s great to hear him on the mic for “Young And Wasted” and the aforementioned “Black Diamond”. Gene’s bass shines on the mix – just listen to “Cold Gin” as he steadily attacks the strings. He really is an underrated bassist; his brief solo is groovy and has a nice rhythm.

As for Paul Stanley, the ‘80s unmasked era is where he starts flying the f-bombs in his stage raps, and it’s a bit weird to hear that, but his banter before “Cold Gin” is entertaining as well as when he jokes about giving the whole audience a drink to share. On this show, there’s a little wear-and-tear on his voice, but the energy is there. He lets out a wicked high note in “Creatures Of The Night”, but for the most part doesn’t go crazy with misplaced shrieks.

Worthy of mention are two tracks that are victims to cassette flips – “Young And Wasted” is missing parts, but Universal did the right thing to just leave what was there so listeners at least have something to hear and the finale “Rock And Roll All Nite” has the same fate and smartly fades out to end the disc.

There’s a definite energy and motivation that shines through the speakers as KISS was riding the wave of a successful album, continuing to rebuild their reputation after taking the makeup off. Everything was faster in the ‘80s and the ‘70s tracks are sped up and lose that mid-tempo groove, which will be off-putting to some fans, but it fits the vibe of the time.

Live In Poughkeepsie ‘84 is not perfect, even a bit rough at times, but it’s 100% sweaty rock ‘n’ roll and I’d take that over this ridiculous era of backing tracks and other nonsense polluting the live arena.

KISS – Off The Soundboard: Live In Poughkeepsie, NY 1984

The multi-platinum band’s fifth authorized Soundboard live release comes from the November 28th, 1984 Animalize Tour show at the Mid-Hudson Arena in Poughkeepsie, NY, featuring the only known soundboard recording with guitarist Mark St. John. While the tracks “Young And Wasted” and “Rock And Roll All Nite” from this historic show are incomplete due to a tape change and tape space – these recordings were originally for archival use – this live recording is of historical importance due to St. John’s appearance.

Off The Soundboard: Poughkeepsie, New York finds the legendary band in the midst of the U.S. leg of their successful Animalize World Tour with the short-lived lineup of Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Eric Carr, and guitarist Mark St. John. The career-spanning 18-song set includes current-era KISS tracks such as “Creatures Of The Night,” “I Love It Loud,” “Lick It Up,” and 1984’s “Heaven’s On Fire,” which hit No. 49 U.S. Billboard chart. Poughkeepsie, New York also features perennial KISS anthems “Detroit Rock City,” “Love Gun,” and “Rock And Roll All Nite” from their classic back catalog.

KISS are globally recognized as one of the greatest live bands of all time and are the creators of what is universally considered the best live album ever, 1975’s gold-certified and No. 9 Billboard charting Alive!. The KISS – Off The Soundboard series continues their storied legacy of groundbreaking live albums with a document of the spectacular, larger-than-life extravaganza that is a KISS concert.

Known for their trademark performances, KISS has proven for decades why they are hands down the most iconic live show in rock n roll. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers have sold more than 100 million albums worldwide. Peerless as a live act, the band’s illustrious legacy has been marked by record breaking global tours during a remarkable 50-year career.

KISS / From Poughkeepsie, the only Mark St. John soundboard recording

January 30, 2023
Off The Soundboard - Live In Pooghkeepsie - 28.11.1984 Kiss-o14

KISS will release the next part of their Off The Soundboard official live bootleg series with the show from Poughkeepsie, New York, recorded at Mid-Hudson Arena on 28 November 1984, during the Animalize World Tour. This next package will be released on 7 April 2023.

This show, their fifth authorized Soundboard live release, is the only known soundboard recording with guitarist Mark St. John making it a recording of historical importance.

The tracks Young And Wasted and Rock And Roll All Nite from this historic show are incomplete due to a tape change and tape space. The recordings were originally for archival use only.

Recorded in the middle of the US leg of their successful Animalize World Tour with the short-lived lineup of Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Eric Carr, and guitarist Mark St. John, the career-spanning 18-song set includes current-era KISS tracks such as Creatures Of The Night, I Love It Loud, Lick It Up, and 1984s Heaven’s On Fire, as well as perennial KISS anthems Detroit Rock City, Love Gun, and Rock And Roll All Nite from their classic back catalogue.

The Poughkeepsie show will be available to stream and download, with a double LP standard black vinyl set, CD, and a limited edition double LP set pressed on 180g custard yellow vinyl. All are available to pre-order now exclusively through the Official KISS online store.

Mark St. John was hired as the band’s guitarist replacing Vinnie Vincent, following the conclusion of the Lick It Up tour in March 1984. A reactive arthritis condition took St. John out of action not long after he made his recorded debut with the Animalize album later that same year.

He played only two full shows and one partial show during the Animalize tour, with Bruce Kulick playing the rest and was officially replaced on 8 December 1984. St. John died in early April 2007, several months after being badly beaten during a brief stay in an Orange County jail.

Cool that KISS is cranking these soundboard’s out at a decent clip. No frills packaging which is no biggie as it’s what’s on the inside that matters.

So here come’s the fifth authorized soundboard bootleg that being a show recorded back on November 28th 1984 in Poughkeepsie NY. The real kicker here is its one of the few shows that Vinnie Vincent’s replacement Mark St. John played with the band.

Now before I go any further I have to add that shows like this one were recorded back than that were probably not to be released yet here we are 39 years later and Gene and Paul should be applauded at putting out a historical piece of KISStory!
Off The Soundboard - Live In Pooghkeepsie - 28.11.1984 Img-1913

It’s been about 45 years or so since  I joined the KISS ARMY  and I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly with these guys yet at times they still amaze me that they can put stuff out like this show that keeps me interested.

Good to see some Eric Carr live shows coming out after the “Creatures” box set from last year and now this one.

Now for the sound. I have been reading out there people are nit picking it along with the performances and the tempos. Who cares folks, be happy as KISS ’84 was a different animal live. KISS was trying to keep up with the young metal bands (Def Leppard) at the time and perhaps the heavier bands at the time(Judas Priest).

Even Paul Stanley was trying to be badass frontman back in 84 dropping F-Bombs and  going on about the usual KISS on stage banter that being the topics of bras and Love Guns. Still though this album for me is a charm for two reasons.

1- Mark St. John. KISS wanted a shredder and they got one. Sure he’s kinda all over the map at time’s on here but give the guy a break as there he was playing the few shows he did with not only Gene and Paul watching him but off in the distance was his replacement Bruce Kulick.

2- Neat to hear some live stuff from “Lick it Up” (“Young & Wasted”, “Fits Like A Glove”, “Lick It Up”) plus a couple from there current album at the time they were plugging, “Animalize” (“Heaven’s On Fire” and “Under The Gun”).

KISS rips and rolls over these tunes at a fast clip and I’m good with it. This is a warts n all release if there ever was one. As well you get the disclaimer saying that two songs are incomplete which is fine as it’s better than them not being on here….

KISS: OFF THE SOUNDBOARD-Poughkeepsie NY (1984)

Kiss – ‘Off the Soundboard: Poughkeepsie, NY Mid-Hudson Civic Arena, November 28, 1984’ (2023) – Album Review

PUBLISHED ON June 15, 2023

Kiss has been killing it with live releases and the ‘Off the Soundboard’ Series. It was a brilliant idea for them to take control of their live shows and rather than not make any money with all the bootlegs out there, but to release their own bootleg versions of these shows. This is the 5th one I believe and might be one of the cooler ones they’ve done. It was recorded in Poughkeepsie, NY on November 28, 1984 at the Mid-Hudson Civic Arena. Wait, this is their 5th one, which means there are still 2 I haven’t reviewed yet. I need to get on that. Well, back to this. What makes this one so special? It is because the guitarists on the album is Mark St. John. The band at the time also had original members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley as well as Peter Criss’ replacement Eric Carr on drums. Now, by this time, Eric is considered a regular and not the new guy anymore. And one of the nicest guys ever.
Off The Soundboard - Live In Pooghkeepsie - 28.11.1984 20230353

Mark was hired after they let Vinnie Vincent go because they didn’t feel he deserved the contract that Vinnie thought he deserved and thank goodness they didn’t. Mark recorded the guitars on the ‘Animalize’ album and immediately let the world know this was not the same old Kiss. And with these Kiss songs played live, Mark adds his own flair and isn’t out there to copy anybodies parts. Nope, not at all. This show is Mark doing it his way.

Sadly, Mark had developed reactive arthritis which caused his hands and arms to swell making playing very difficult. He went out on tour with the band and the band also brought along Bruce Kulick to be the back-up guitarist if Mark couldn’t play. It turned out that Mark was only able to play on 3 of the Kiss shows and this was one of them. That’s right, they actually have the recording of one of the shows with Mark and that is what makes this set so cool. I already have a bootleg from this tour, but my show has Bruce on it. I also saw this tour and that show had Bruce in it. That is why I think this set is so freaking cool. Great job Kiss!!

LP ONE:
Off The Soundboard - Live In Pooghkeepsie - 28.11.1984 20230354

Sit back and hold on tight because Kiss comes roaring out of the gate with “Detroit Rock City” and it is sped up which doesn’t bother me at all. Kiss were known to play faster during the 80’s and I think it gives an urgency to everything which is fine by me. You immediately hear Mark’s impact as the solo here, while it does sound like the original, there are a lot of Mark’s bits thrown in that makes it his own. This will happen throughout the show. Paul let’s out a scream and F bomb and he starts in on how hot it is in Poughkeepsie which he brings up throughout the show. Then he goes in to his “Cold Gin” banter and then they play the hell out of that song. Gene takes this one and sounds great.

Then we get a couple 80’s tracks with “Creatures of the Night” and “Fits Like A Glove”. First off some more F bombs from Paul and I forgot how much he used to cuss and so what. I know people have complained about it, but grow a pair and get over it. On “Creatures” the bass is turned up a little louder on this one. No complaint, only pointing it out. I can say Mark is doing it his way as the guitar doesn’t sound like the studio version at all. After they fly through it, we get more Paul colorful banter and it is crude and I love it. And that banter is appropriate for a song like “Fits Like a Glove”. The heavy guitar riff and the “Ughhh” are as dirty as they come. The sexual innuendos fly as Gene spits out those lyrics a breakneck speed. Gene and sex just fit like a glove!! And listen to that solo, Mark really tears it up and then when Mark and Gene trade licks at the end, it is awesome.
Off The Soundboard - Live In Pooghkeepsie - 28.11.1984 20230355

And when you flip over to Side Two, you get the first Mark St. John song with the song “Heaven’s on Fire” from ‘Animalize. Paul does the opening “oooh oooh’s” great as his voice is in fine shape at this point. As this is a new song, the crowd doesn’t know it quite as well, but he gets them screaming. The sound on this one isn’t as full all the time, but still fun to hear this one. Then we get to the guitar solo, but hold on…it ain’t Mark. No, this is the classic Paul Stanley solo. It’s decent enough, but Paul ain’t a shredder so don’t expect that. Next up is another ‘Animalize’ song with “Under the Gun” and grab on as Mark just shreds the crap out of this one. His fingers flying at warped speed up and down the neck of the guitar. This is a heavy rocker and a great example of what Mark St. John can do with a guitar, I mean just listen to that solo and judge for yourself. Great track.

Then Eric starts banging out the drums on the intro to the song “War Machine” which gives Mr. Simmons a time to shine. Now, it isn’t the same without make-up, but Gene still owns this song as it is dark and menacing like he is. The song then goes in to the drum solo and I love Eric’s drum solos. He’s a small pack of TNT ready to explode and his drums do that as he shows his expertise on the skins.

LP TWO:
Off The Soundboard - Live In Pooghkeepsie - 28.11.1984 20230356

Time for LP #2 and it kicks off with more Eric Carr as he now gets to sing the song “Young And Wasted”. It is so cool to have him singing and make it more of a band effort. The only problem with the song as it is cut short as they were probably switching tapes at the soundboard as they weren’t expecting to release these back in the day. It was strictly for archival purposes. Then Gene gets his bass solo, but don’t expect any blood or fire as he wasn’t doing this then. But you will get to see he is an underrated bass player. Then you get a few “Oh Yeah’s and Alright’s and you know it is time for Gene’s classic Kiss song “I Love It Loud” which I love as when this song came out back on Creatures, I knew the Kiss I loved was back.

This heavy 80’s set continues with another Creatures song “I Still Love You” which is another favorite song of mine and Paul really nails this one. The nights only ballad and I dig the dark tone and vibe the song gives off. Paul again sounds fantastic as he can really hit those notes as he shows off his range. I could listen to this one all day long. Paul keeps it going with more cheeky banter about the heat and his “Love Gun”. Not the best “Love Gun” story which I think is the biggest flaw of the night. Wow, this one is done at supersonic speed which his fine as we can get to one of my favorite live tracks faster.
Off The Soundboard - Live In Pooghkeepsie - 28.11.1984 20230357

On Side four we have the final song of the night before the encore with “Black Diamond“. But you have to get through Paul’s crowd banter on the heat again and teaching them the song before we get to the enjoyment of the song. This is another chance for Eric Carr to shine as he takes on Peter’s vocal duties. I love the opening guitar, the soft Paul vocals to start and then the band explodes in full force and Eric rocks it out. He will always be a favorite member of the band for me. And that is the main show.

The encore is quick because it is so hot, Paul’s had enough and just wants to get to the encore. First up is the insanely stupid, what the hell were they thinking track “Oh Susanna”. I mean seriously, whose stupid idea was it to play that. A complete waste of time. And then Paul talks about “thanking god guys have tongues” before getting to the first real encore song “Lick It Up”. I will admit the beginning guitars don’t sound like “Lick it Up” to me as they are a little flat, but once they get going it sounds better. And then they end the show with the one song I don’t ever want to hear again in my life, “Rock And Roll All Nite”. Okay, that isn’t true, I can’t wait to hear it one last time at the final Kiss show…I might cry at it that point! This song ends with a fade out as I think they ran out of tape while recording so instead of stopping abruptly, they faded out, oh well. No complaints here.

And there you have it. Another Off the Soundboard recording and one of the better ones historically speaking. I think the band listened to the fans and finally gave us a show that we wanted. One from the 80’s and one with Mark St. John. For that alone, My Overall Score is a 5.0 out of 5.0 Stars. There are some flaws here with the tape issues, but none of that matters as we get a piece of Kisstory having Mark St. John on this one. Damn fine job with this one Kiss. Thank you!!

Kiss – ‘Off the Soundboard: Poughkeepsie, NY Mid-Hudson Civic Arena, 28 novembre 1984’ (2023) – Critique d’album

Aucune plainte ici.

Merci!!
