Kiss had released the ‘Music from the Elder’ back in November 1981 and it flopped. The record company was in a panic and needed to get something out so people could forget about the disaster that was ‘the Elder’ so what do they do? Well, they put out a compilation. Phonogram (the band’s European label) requested Kiss go back in and record some new songs for the compilation which they gladly did…well a couple of them gladly did. Ace was pretty much done with Kiss back in 1981 and wasn’t involved at all with any of the new songs. However, he wouldn’t leave the band until after the next album in late 1982. Gene played on them (I think), but didn’t sing or write as he was pretty busy either with his girlfriend Diana Ross or making movies.

The heavy lifting was left to Paul and Eric. Paul wrote or co-wrote all the songs and sang on all of them. The label and band brought in a bunch of outside writers including Mikel Japp, who co-wrote with Paul on his solo album, Adam Mitchell, who would write a lot on the next album ‘Creatures of the Night’, and lastly some guy named Bryan Adams. All the drum work was done by Eric Carr and the late Bob Kulick handled all the lead guitar work just as he did on Alive II, with rhythm guitar on one song done by Mikel Japp. So, I guess it is still Kiss.

The sound is a pre-curser of the band returning to their rock roots and away from the pop and experimental stuff that had come on the previous three albums. Now it wasn’t a full return, but it was a step in the right direction. The album cover used was from photo shoots with the band in their “Elder” attire as you can see Gene with the short hair and Paul with that freaky bandana. Since the record company wanted a heavier sound, they brought in some new blood to produce, Michael James Jackson. MJJ would go on to show that Kiss could still rock with their next two albums as well, ‘Creatures of the Night’ and ‘Lick it Up’.

My version of this album is in pretty rough shape, but it is still a cool version to have. Mine is from Brazil. And someone wrote on the cover, but as I don’t see this in the wild, ever, I grabbed it anyway. The album was released pretty much everywhere, but the United States. And the Japanese edition had two additional tracks including “Escape from the Island” which was not on their version of ‘Music from the Elder” and they had “Shandi” as well. Australia got “Talk to Me” and “Shandi” which is no surprise as “Shandi was a big hit there. Now I am on the hunt for those versions as well. As a lot of these songs have been written about before, I will focus on the four new songs and the songs that had a different mix than the original releases. Let’s get started.


The opening track, “I’m A Legend Tonight” is the band going back to their much heavier, borderline metal roots. With a heavy drum beat from Eric and nasty guitar riff from Bob it instantly lets you know that Kiss can still rock. Paul is at his vocal best with this song. It is full of swagger and pure gold. This one was written by Paul and Adam Mitchell.

Next up is “Down on Your Knees” and this one is nothing but cocky swagger by Paul. It is an average track and is borderline being a great rock anthem. It sounds more 80’s Rock than anything they have done up to this point in the 80’s. This one was written by Paul, Mikel Japp and Bryan Adams. Of course, Bryan hadn’t shot to the stratosphere yet, but that was coming soon enough for him.

All the other songs on Side 1 are original versions with the exception of “Shout it Out Loud” which is off the 1976 album ‘Destroyer’. This version isn’t dramatically different. It is the version that was released on the 7″ single mix which is only slightly edited with the vocals in the center rather than a Gene on left side and Paul on right side thing with the vocals. It is also shorter by only about 9 seconds as it fades out a lot quicker.

Side 2 kicks off with my favorite of the new songs “Nowhere to Run”. This is all Paul and no other co-writers. I love the little drum fill at the beginning with a little acoustic intro and it built up from there. Another one with some great guitar work by Bob as he does lay down an awesome solo on this one as well. Eric’s drums are loud and powerful as he brought such a new life to the Kiss sound.  Paul hasn’t sounded better vocally. The song is a little darker than Paul’s fare lately and I think it suits him perfectly.

The final new track is “Partners in Crime” which was written by Paul and Adam. It is even more 80’s sounding than “Down on Your Knees” if that is possible. It is heavy on the sex since it is about an affair with a married woman. It is a typical rock song of the time and I like it. I hate these didn’t get released in the U.S. but it makes sense as Kiss was pretty much dead and the radio wasn’t going to play anything from them.

Now this side has a couple edited tracks including “Detroit Rock City” which cuts out the intro and most of the story line except for the crash at the end. The other edited song is “I Was Made For Loving You” which might be the Single edit. It is shorter than the album version and actually longer than my 7″ Single version. “God of Thunder” is also slightly edited but that edit is only removing the opening with the kids saying “Ok, you can start singing”. All the other kids parts are still there.

No track listing or score on this one since it is a compilation. I leave the Keep or Delete thing for studio albums (mostly). Even though this was never officially released in the U.S., back in the late 80’s I found a CD at a store and bought it and I fell in love with these new songs. For me, this was a fantastic greatest hits compilation and is a great introduction to the band if you hadn’t already been introduced to them prior. I would give this a 4.5 out of 5.0 Stars as I would’ve liked to have the other songs offered on it as well. Kiss needed this boost and they needed to show the world they could still rock…too bad no one really noticed. Can they keep that rock going with the next album? We will see.

La maison de disques était paniquée et avait besoin de sortir quelque chose pour que les gens puissent oublier le désastre qu'était "The Elder", alors que font-ils ? Eh bien, ils ont sorti une compilation. Phonogram (le label européen du groupe) a demandé à Kiss de revenir et d'enregistrer de nouvelles chansons pour la compilation, ce qu'ils ont fait avec plaisir… enfin, quelques-uns l'ont fait avec plaisir. Ace en avait pratiquement terminé avec Kiss en 1981 et n'était impliqué du tout dans aucune des nouvelles chansons. Cependant, il ne quittera le groupe qu'après le prochain album à la fin de 1982. Gene a joué dessus (je pense), mais n'a pas chanté ni écrit car il était assez occupé avec sa petite amie Diana Ross ou à faire des films.

Le gros du travail a été laissé à Paul et Eric. Paul a écrit ou co-écrit toutes les chansons et chanté sur chacune d'elles. Le label et le groupe ont fait appel à un groupe d'écrivains extérieurs, dont Mikel Japp, qui a co-écrit avec Paul sur son album solo, Adam Mitchell, qui écrira beaucoup sur le prochain album "Creatures of the Night", et enfin un gars nommé Bryan Adams. Tout le travail de batterie a été fait par Eric Carr et le regretté Bob Kulick a géré tout le travail de guitare principale comme il l'a fait sur Alive II, avec une guitare rythmique sur une chanson réalisée par Mikel Japp. Donc, je suppose que c'est toujours Kiss.

Le son est un précurseur du retour du groupe à ses racines rock et loin des trucs pop et expérimentaux qui étaient venus sur les trois albums précédents. Ce n'était pas un retour complet, mais c'était un pas dans la bonne direction. La couverture de l'album utilisée provenait de séances photo avec le groupe dans sa tenue "Elder", comme vous pouvez le voir Gene avec les cheveux courts et Paul avec ce bandana bizarre. Comme la maison de disques voulait un son plus lourd, ils ont amené du sang neuf à produire, Michael James Jackson. MJJ continuerait à montrer que Kiss pouvait encore faire du rock avec ses deux prochains albums, "Creatures of the Night" et "Lick it Up".

Ma version de cet album est assez sommaire, mais c'est quand même une version sympa à avoir. Le mien vient du Brésil. Et quelqu'un a écrit sur la couverture, mais comme je ne vois jamais ça dans la nature, je l'ai quand même attrapé. L'album est sorti un peu partout, sauf aux États-Unis. Et l'édition japonaise avait deux morceaux supplémentaires dont "Escape from the Island" qui n'était pas sur leur version de "Music from the Elder" et ils avaient aussi "Shandi". L'Australie a obtenu "Talk to Me" et "Shandi", ce qui n'est pas une surprise car "Shandi a été un grand succès là-bas. Maintenant, je suis également à la recherche de ces versions. Comme beaucoup de ces chansons ont déjà été écrites, je vais me concentrer sur les quatre nouvelles chansons et les chansons qui avaient un mélange différent des versions originales. Commençons.

FACE UN :
Le morceau d'ouverture, "I'm A Legend Tonight", est le groupe qui revient à ses racines métalliques beaucoup plus lourdes et borderline. Avec un rythme de batterie lourd d'Eric et un riff de guitare méchant de Bob, cela vous permet de savoir instantanément que Kiss peut encore rocker. Paul est à son meilleur niveau vocal avec cette chanson. Il est plein de fanfaronnade et d'or pur. Celui-ci a été écrit par Paul et Adam Mitchell.

La prochaine étape est "Down on Your Knees" et celui-ci n'est rien d'autre qu'un fanfaron arrogant de Paul. C'est une piste moyenne et à la limite d'être un grand hymne rock. Cela sonne plus rock des années 80 que tout ce qu'ils ont fait jusqu'à présent dans les années 80. Celui-ci a été écrit par Paul, Mikel Japp et Bryan Adams. Bien sûr, Bryan n'avait pas encore atteint la stratosphère, mais cela arrivait assez tôt pour lui.

Toutes les autres chansons de la face 1 sont des versions originales à l'exception de "Shout it Out Loud" qui est extrait de l'album "Destroyer" de 1976. Cette version n'est pas radicalement différente. C'est la version qui est sortie sur le single mix 7″ qui n'est que légèrement édité avec la voix au centre plutôt qu'un Gene à gauche et Paul à droite avec la voix. Il est également plus court de seulement 9 secondes environ car il s'estompe beaucoup plus rapidement.

FACE DEUX :
La face 2 démarre avec ma préférée des nouvelles chansons "Nowhere to Run". C'est tout Paul et aucun autre co-auteur. J'adore le petit remplissage de batterie au début avec une petite intro acoustique et ça s'est construit à partir de là. Un autre avec un excellent travail de guitare de Bob, car il établit également un solo impressionnant sur celui-ci. La batterie d'Eric est forte et puissante car il a donné une nouvelle vie au son Kiss. Paul n'a pas sonné mieux vocalement. La chanson est un peu plus sombre que le tarif de Paul ces derniers temps et je pense qu'elle lui convient parfaitement.

Le dernier nouveau morceau est "Partners in Crime" qui a été écrit par Paul et Adam. C'est encore plus des années 80 que "Down on Your Knees" si c'est possible. C'est lourd sur le sexe puisqu'il s'agit d'une liaison avec une femme mariée. C'est une chanson rock typique de l'époque et j'aime ça. Je déteste que ceux-ci ne soient pas sortis aux États-Unis, mais cela a du sens car Kiss était à peu près mort et la radio n'allait rien jouer d'eux.

Maintenant, ce côté a quelques pistes éditées, y compris "Detroit Rock City" qui coupe l'intro et la majeure partie de l'histoire, à l'exception du crash à la fin. L'autre chanson éditée est "I Was Made For Loving You" qui pourrait être l'édition Single. Elle est plus courte que la version album et en fait plus longue que ma version 7″ Single. "God of Thunder" est également légèrement modifié, mais cette modification ne fait que supprimer l'ouverture avec les enfants disant "Ok, vous pouvez commencer à chanter". Toutes les autres pièces pour enfants sont toujours là.

Pas de tracklisting ni de score sur celui-ci puisqu'il s'agit d'une compilation. Je laisse la chose Keep ou Delete pour les albums studio (surtout). Même si cela n'a jamais été officiellement publié aux États-Unis, à la fin des années 80, j'ai trouvé un CD dans un magasin et je l'ai acheté et je suis tombé amoureux de ces nouvelles chansons. Pour moi, c'était une fantastique compilation des plus grands succès et c'est une excellente introduction au groupe si vous ne les aviez pas déjà rencontrés auparavant. Je lui donnerais 4,5 étoiles sur 5,0 car j'aurais aimé que les autres chansons y soient également proposées. Kiss avait besoin de ce coup de pouce et ils avaient besoin de montrer au monde qu'ils pouvaient encore faire du rock… dommage que personne ne l'ait vraiment remarqué. Peuvent-ils continuer ce rock avec le prochain album ? Nous verrons.
