Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott Says KISS Have Never Sounded Better Live Than Their Current Lineup
Largely because of current members Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer‘s acquisition of the iconic Catman and Spaceman personas originally designed by Peter Criss and Ace Frehley, KISS have been subject to an extent of criticism from an audience of longtime listeners, especially when it comes to the band’s live performances. However, Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott argues that you would be pressed to find a roster in KISStory that does a stronger job onstage.
During a recent interview with the Atlantic City, New Jersey, classic rock radio station 100.7 WZXL, Elliott was questioned as to whether his current summer tour mates have paid any attention towards their recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year. “I don’t think they take any notice of it,” he responded, before explaining that he believes the only jarring criticisms about the current KISS lineup come from mean-spirited fans on the internet.
“I mean, look, the Internet is just a forum for negativity. People very rarely spend hours and hours writing little comments underneath an article that’s positive. It’s all, like, ‘Oh, these guys suck,’ or ‘Blah blah blah,’ because they’re anonymous, so they can say stuff. And you tend to just ignore it, which is what I’m sure KISS are doing,” Elliott said.
The Def Leppard frontman continued to say that both on and off the stage, the members of KISS are enjoying their positions. “When it comes to backstage at the KISS thing, they’re all loving this, because Tommy Thayer is a phenomenal guitar player, and Eric Singer is a great drummer. And the songs have never sounded as good live, as far as I’m concerned. With all due respect to Peter Criss and Ace Frehley, it seems to be a happier camp.”
The conversation continued with Elliott echoing previous statements made by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley that the rock band is as much a corporation as a musical group. “I’ve seen some people say that [Tommy and Eric] don’t deserve to be able to wear the ['Spaceman' and 'Catman'] makeup. Well, KISS is a franchise as much as a band, or a brand and a band, and if that’s what it takes to sell the band, that they wear the same makeup.”
As for those fans who feel the current KISS lineup isn’t authentic, Joe Elliott has a message for you: “move on. If you like the songs, and you’ve got Gene and Paul which were always, in fairness, the two most out-front members of KISS anyway, I think it still works.”
In regards to Def Leppard’s own overdue induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, who have been eligible to join the collective for the past twelve years, Elliott shares a similar stance with that of guitarist Phil Collen. “The fact that a band as ‘mom’s apple pie’ as Lynyrd Skynyrd was seven nominations before they were accepted, I find the whole Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame thing absolutely a waste of space. And I hope they never ask us to be in it, ’cause I wouldn’t wanna go anyway.”
