ACE FREHLEY LOOKS BACK ON KISS' UNMASKED ALBUM - "MOST OF THE SONGS THAT I WROTE IN THOSE DAYS, I PLAYED BASS ON" (VIDEO)
November 1, 2020, 6 hours ago
Founding KISS guitarist and Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame member, Ace Frehley, recently guested on The Disc Dive. In the installment below he talks about Love Gun, Alive II, Dynasty, Unmasked, and Music From The Elder.
On the Unmasked album, released in 1980:
"Most of the songs that I wrote in those days, I played bass on. In retrospect, I think Gene (Simmons) might have been hurt a little because a lot of times I wouldn't even ask him. I'd go, 'I'm playing bass on this song; I wrote the bass part, I wanna do it.' I never really gave him a chance to do his version of what the bass part should be. At that point I guess I was becoming a little pushy about the way I wanted my songs to sound. Be that as it may, it seemed to work at the time."

Ace Frehley Explains Why He Left KISS & What He Didn't Like About Gene Simmons at the Time
The guitarist also shares his opinion on using Pro Tools.

During an appearance on Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon, classic KISS guitarist Ace Frehley talked about parting ways with the band for the first time back in the early '80s.
Discussing how he parted ways with the group, Ace commented (transcribed by UG):
"The whole idea behind rock 'n' roll is that it's supposed to be fun. You listen to music, and it gets you happy. KISS used to be fun for me, and when it got to the point where it wasn't fun anymore, I quit. "1981, Gene [Simmons, bass] was over-merchandising the band, they wanted to tour constantly, I didn't want to tour - I wanted to drive my sports cars and hang out with my friends in between. "They were workaholics, and I wanted to go to Studio 54 and enjoy my stardom. [laughs] "So we parted ways on that - because they wanted to constantly tour, and I said, 'Go ahead, I'm out of here.' Plus with the success of my solo album, it was kind of like writing on the wall for me. "That was much more creative from those guys. I knew within a few years that I'll be leaving the group to form up my own band - and so far, so good, one day at a time. "I celebrate 14 years sober, and it's a milestone for me - never thought I'd reach that, but with the help of God, I have. I still take it one day at a time."
Back when you were recording the first couple of KISS records compared to now, how do you think guitar tones have changed through the years?
"You know, we didn't have Pro Tools back then. These are all recordings with different plugins, like, new algorithms that emulate different sounds, but you know, a lot of it has to do with digital reverbs and stuff that wasn't available to us. "When you think about the stuff that was recorded at the Power Station - like for example [1985's] 'Addicted to Love' by Robert Palmer, they got that ambient drum sound by putting the snare drum into a hallway and re-recording it back into the tape machine - because they didn't have digital reverbs then. "And now we got so many different types of special effects that just make the production sound bigger, better, natural doubling effects. Me and John 5 used a special auto-panner for the guitar solo on [the cover of Cream's] 'Politician' that came out so cool - that's pretty much it. "Editing is so much easier with Pro Tools, it's a click of a mouse, you know. In the early days with KISS, we'd have to cut the tape with a razor blade and put it back together with a special tape hoping you wouldn't hear the click when it went back."
Was there a lot of punching in and punching out on those early KISS records - was there a lot of editing that had to be done?
"Oh yeah, there was a lot of mistakes we had to fix, even on the [1975's] 'Alive 1,' we overdubbed a lot of the mistakes and made it sound better than the original recording. "And we had audience loops, [producer] Eddie Kramer had like three 0.25-inch tape machines with long loops going around, and he had three faders; one was one kind of audience reaction, the second one was a stronger audience reaction, and No. 3 was just like everybody going completely apeshit. [Laughs] "We used a lot of shit to make that album sound more exciting, but pretty much the heart of the record is still our live performance, and what made that album so great was the packaging and the booklet. "It was like a souvenir of a KISS concert, and KISS was a very strong band live, and I think that's what made that album so successful."
Talk about KISS' 'Alive 1,' celebrating that anniversary - do you have any special moments or memories you want to share about the album? "Not really. [Laughs] You got to remember - what was that, 40 years ago? After all the alcohol and drugs I've done over the years, I lost a few brain cells, my memory's not where it used to be. [Laughs] Tomorrow I'm celebrating 14 years sober, so that's a blessing."

Randy Legault is a serious motherfucker when it comes to rock music, owns a video editing company 'Legault Post' and enjoys Beer. He's a good boy, crazy 'bout Elvis. Loves Zeppelin and his lovely wife too. A true defender of the faith with a serious arsenal of knowledge that is fun tapping into.
Beau Shiminsky came out of the womb kicking and screaming and naturally the music bug hit early. By 14 he started a punk band and has turned it to 11 ever since. The love of music lead to a career in Scoring Films and Audio Post-Production at his Studio 'Ear Candy'. Comfortably numb with a rum and a whole lotta love for Rock N Roll.
