The rock band risked it all by washing their faces clean in a live reveal — only to go back to wearing makeup a decade later.

When the band KISS first emerged on the scene in the 1970s, they weren’t like the other popular acts of the time. “At the same time that we were forming in New York, there was a very big glitter scene, where boys were basically acting like girls and putting on makeup,” KISS frontman Gene Simmons told the fanzine Porkchops & Applesauce according to Yahoo! Entertainment. “Well, we were more like football players — all of us were over 6 feet tall — and it just wasn't convincing!”

However, the group eventually found their own take on the trend. They ended up using makeup too —but in a different way. Covering their faces with black-and-white paint, the band masked their own facades and taking on stage identities: vocalist and bassist Simmons was the Demon, guitarist and vocalist Paul Stanley became Star Child, guitarist Ace Frehley turned into Spaceman and drummer Peter Criss took on Catman.

And it worked. Even with multiple changes in their lineup, KISS has released 44 albums in the last four decades, selling more than 100 million albums worldwide and earning a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.

While the makeup has become synonymous with KISS, one of the band’s biggest moments came when they revealed their natural faces in an MTV interview in 1983. But that momentous decision didn’t come easy.

The band struggled at first to find their look

During their early days in New York, the band experimented with their style. “The very first pictures we took when the band first got together, we looked like drag queens,” Simmons told the fanzine. “But we knew we wanted to get outlandish.”

To figure out what that meant for them, they had to really dig into their own personalities. “Getting up onstage was almost a holy place for us, like church, so being onstage looking like a bum wasn't my idea of respect,” he continued. “That's where the makeup and dressing up came in. It would have obviously been a lot easier to get up onstage in jeans and t-shirts and go, ‘Okay, here we are — we're the Ramones!’ And that would have been just as valid, but it would not have been honest.”

And that’s how the makeup looks came about — completely organically. "I just remember being in a loft in downtown New York and looking in the mirror and just starting to draw,” Simmons remembered. “It was very stream-of-consciousness. What you see is really what just happened. ... Nobody else was involved.”

They played their first official show on January 30, 1973, at the Queens nightclub Popcorn — and by the following year, they were signed to Casablanca Records and on a North American tour, gaining a reputation for their on-stage theatrics. They released their self-titled debut on February 18, 1974.
Simmons said it felt 'good' to reveal their paint-free faces

By the 1980s, things changed. In 1980, Criss left and was replaced by Eric Carr who took on a new character called The Fox, and two years later, Frehley went solo and Vinnie Vincent stepped in as an Egyptian ankh. While they still wore makeup throughout the release of the Unmasked album and their Brazil show in June 1983, things were about to change.

On September 18, 1983, the quartet appeared on MTV and shocked the world by revealing their makeup-free faces, along with a video for the first track off the new album, “Lick It Up.”

“It feels good,” Simmons said moments after the unveiling. “We've always been close to our fans. In fact, in a lot of the shows, we'd walk out into the crowd to get a feel of what everybody was feeling like and most often they really wouldn't know it was us, so we've always felt closer. I think it's time for them to notice a little bit more. It feels very, very comfortable. I hope it seems that way — I feel fine about it!”

“To me, it doesn't feel all that different because I've seen these guys more often without makeup than I have with makeup,” Stanley admitted.

Up until that point, they had never performed without makeup except “back in the hotel.”

“We thought about it for a while — we could give you all kinds of great answers, like that we went and saw a Swami, and we did do that too — but it just felt like the right time to do it,” Simmons said ahead of the release of their 18th record. “The band feels so strong, and it just felt like, do it.”

The public's reaction to the reveal was not all positive

The stunt paid off. Their success spiked and the album Lick It Up went platinum. Yet, the reaction to the new clean-cut look wasn’t all positive.

“Everybody hated it,” Simmons recalled, according to Yahoo. “People didn't want the paint to come off, but you know what? Tough. It had to happen.”

To keep their longevity, they felt the new image had to emerge. “You want your heroes to stay the same forever, but then the consequence of that is you get bored with them,” he continued. “We had to take it off. It had run its course.”

For more than a decade, they remained fresh-faced — and reminded fans they were the same band no matter how they appeared. “Nothing really changes because we only know one way to perform,” Stanley said during the MTV interview. “The makeup never had anything to do with the [special effects smoke] bombs so or doing splits. Whatever we were doing on stage comes from us. Taking the makeup off doesn't change how we feel and we’re the same people.”

There is still controversy over the band's look today

In the mid-1990s, the slow road back to their original look began. First, in August 1995, Criss and Frehley returned for a mini-reunion of the founding members for an MTV performance, and on February 28, 1996, the original four made a surprise appearance at the Grammys — in full costume and makeup for the first time in 17 years.

They also went on an Alive Worldwide Reunion tour for 13 months with 200 shows in 26 countries, making it the year’s top-grossing tour.

As the new millennium began, KISS started their long goodbye, with the Farewell tour starting in 2000. But in 2001, Criss left and was replaced by Eric Singer — who also took over his Catman look. The following year, Frehley left again and was replaced by Tommy Thayer, taking on the Spaceman look.

That led to a new outrage for different people to take on those iconic personalities — to which Simmons simply told Rolling Stone: “Why wouldn’t we use the classic make up? We own it.”

“There’s always going to be five percent or 10 percent of people who were there at the beginning who will complain about anything,” he continued. “And listen, I think that’s valid from their point of view. But people get onto a train at different times.”

As he said during the initial MTV reveal, even though the band is known for their makeup — it was never the focus: “We always contended from the beginning that the makeup was just a sort of a stage manifestation of who we are... KISS is still KISS. The same energy and drive and commitment to doing everything short of killing ourselves to give people the best show in the world.”

"Biography: KISStory" chronicles the band’s five decades in the business as founders Stanley and Simmons reflect on their historic career. The four-hour, two-night event airs Sunday, June 27 and Monday, June 28 from 9-11 pm ET/PT.

Et c'est ainsi que le maquillage est apparu - de manière complètement organique. "Je me souviens juste d'avoir été dans un loft du centre-ville de New York, de m'être regardé dans le miroir et de commencer à dessiner", se souvient Simmons. "C'était un courant de conscience. Ce que vous voyez est vraiment ce qui vient de se passer. autre était impliqué.

Ils ont joué leur premier spectacle officiel le 30 janvier 1973 à la discothèque Popcorn du Queens - et l'année suivante, ils ont été signés chez Casablanca Records et en tournée nord-américaine, gagnant une réputation pour leur théâtre sur scène. Jusque-là, ils n'avaient jamais joué sans maquillage, sauf "de retour à l'hôtel".

"Nous y avons réfléchi pendant un moment - nous pourrions vous donner toutes sortes de bonnes réponses, comme ça nous sommes allés voir un Swami, et nous l'avons fait aussi - mais c'était juste le bon moment pour le faire", a déclaré Simmons. avant la sortie de leur 18e album. "Le groupe se sent si fort, et c'était comme si, fais-le."

La réaction du public à la révélation n'a pas été entièrement positive

Le coup a payé. Leur succès a grimpé en flèche et l'album Lick It Up est devenu platine. Pourtant, la réaction au nouveau look épuré n'a pas été entièrement positive.

Pour conserver leur longévité, ils ont estimé que la nouvelle image devait émerger. "Vous voulez que vos héros restent les mêmes pour toujours, mais la conséquence en est que vous vous ennuyez avec eux", a-t-il poursuivi. « Nous avons dû l'enlever. Il avait fait son temps. »

Pendant plus d'une décennie, ils sont restés frais et ont rappelé aux fans qu'ils étaient le même groupe, peu importe comment ils apparaissaient. "Rien ne change vraiment parce que nous ne connaissons qu'une seule façon de performer", a déclaré Stanley lors de l'interview de MTV. "Le maquillage n'a jamais rien à voir avec les bombes [fumigènes à effets spéciaux], ni avec les séparations. Tout ce que nous faisions sur scène vient de nous. Au milieu des années 1990, le lent retour à leur look d'origine a commencé. Tout d'abord, en août 1995, Criss et Frehley sont revenus pour une mini-réunion des membres fondateurs pour une performance de MTV, et le 28 février 1996, les quatre originaux ont fait une apparition surprise aux Grammys - en costume et maquillage complets pour le premier fois en 17 ans.

Comme il l'a dit lors de la révélation initiale de MTV, même si le groupe est connu pour son maquillage, cela n'a jamais été au centre des préoccupations : "Nous avons toujours soutenu depuis le début que le maquillage n'était qu'une sorte de manifestation scénique de qui nous sommes... KISS est toujours KISS. La même énergie, la même motivation et le même engagement à tout faire sauf à nous tuer pour donner aux gens le meilleur spectacle au monde.

Lead guitarist Vinnie Vincent was fired after the European Tour due to "unethical behavior." Kiss didn't have enough time to search for another guitarist, so they re-hired Vincent for the American Leg of the tour until his firing became permanent after the tour ended. Bass guitarist Gene Simmons stated in various interviews that Vincent's dismissal was because he never signed his contract as an official member of Kiss and for unethical behavior.
Simmons, when interviewed in August 1983, was unsure how his live persona would apply in the forthcoming "unmasked" shows. He commented, "There's still an element of finding out exactly who we are. I may possibly give up the blood-spitting onstage... The fire-breathing I'd like to do." "God of Thunder" was replaced with "Young and Wasted" early in the tour, and the reason for this was explained in an interview following the Madrid shows. Gene commented, "I tried 'God of Thunder'...and I thought it was wrong. Certain musical pieces should be kept for certain occasions -- out of respect. 'God of Thunder' is me; I am both people; but you have to adjust certain things." While Simmons would retain his fire-breathing routine, he was unsure, at the time, whether it would last: "If that begins to feel wrong I'll drop it as well. There's always a price to pay for something."
It has been widely disputed whether Simmons spit blood for the first and only time without his trademark make-up at the tour's first show in Lisbon. Simmons has both confirmed (in 2002) and denied this claim. In 2007, a picture was put on the internet of Gene Simmons supposedly spitting blood on this tour, but it was later found to be a fraud.

Return Of Kiss Wins Cheers Of Fans At Long Beach Arena

Who is the top heavy metal rock band around today? Def Leppard? Iron Maiden? Quiet Riot? Not quite. The true "Masters of Metal," "Kiss," put all these upstart bands in their place Friday night during a concert at the Long Beach Arena.
You remember Kiss. The band that wore make up and the bass player who spit blood and breathed fire. The band that every one liked in junior high school, and everyone thought was washed up in high school. Well, it seems that Kiss showed everyone that they weren't washed up, if they ever were, during an hour and a half long set that showed headbangers that the groups of today are just cheap copies of the original. Aside from unleashing oldies like Firehouse, Rock and Roll All Night, Black Diamond and Love Gun, Kiss also showed the crowd that tunes like Lick it Up, All Hell's Breakin' Loose, I Still Love You and Creatures of the Night can compete with, and blow away any of today's hits.
Yes, bass player Gene Simmons did breathe fire. Yes, the volume of the show was deafening. And yes, there was a huge backdrop sign that flashed the word "KISS" throughout the show. But that was all that remained of the old Kiss. The make up, once the trademark of Kiss, was gone. So was the blood spitting. But listening to the band play, and watching the stage show, you realized that Kiss, the band that started the wild stage shows that are so often copied nowadays, was still the best at it.
Singer/guitar player Paul Stanley, who along with Simmons are the only remaining members from the original line-up, sang in such a manner that even Ronnie James Dio would have been impressed. His guitar playing, although not in the Eddie Van Halen league, was fantastic.
Vinnie Vincent, who replaced Ace Freyley on lead guitar, is equal to, if not better than, Frehley. Vincent set the stage ablaze with ripping solos throughout the night, especially on Firehouse. And drummer Eric Carr, perched atop the stage on a drum set that looked like a tank (turret and all) pounded away with excellence time and time again. His drum solo concluded with the tank shooting the overhanging speakers out with a massive explosion.
Opening acts Riot and Vandenberg put on passable shows to warm up the crowd. Riot, who is doing some opening shows for Van Halen on the east coast, grabbed the crowd with songs like Born in America and Swords and Tequilla, while Vandenberg, named after lead guitar player Adrian Vandenberg, played a set of mellow metal. The highlight of the band was the guitar word of Vandenberg, who although not yet popular, may be the best guitar player around today.

Quel est le meilleur groupe de heavy metal rock du moment ? Certainement Leppard ? Iron Maiden? Une émeute tranquille ? Pas assez. Les véritables "Masters of Metal", "Kiss", ont remis tous ces nouveaux groupes à leur place vendredi soir lors d'un concert à la Long Beach Arena.
Vous vous souvenez de Kiss. Le groupe maquillé et le bassiste qui crachait du sang et crachait du feu. Le groupe que tout le monde aimait au collège, et que tout le monde pensait avoir échoué au lycée. Eh bien, il semble que Kiss ait montré à tout le monde qu'ils n'étaient pas lavés, si jamais ils l'étaient, pendant un set d'une heure et demie qui a montré aux headbangers que les groupes d'aujourd'hui ne sont que des copies bon marché de l'original. En plus de libérer des classiques comme Firehouse, Rock and Roll All Night, Black Diamond et Love Gun, Kiss a également montré au public que des morceaux comme Lick it Up, All Hell's Breakin' Loose, I Still Love You et Creatures of the Night peuvent rivaliser avec, et époustouflez tous les succès d'aujourd'hui.
Oui, le bassiste Gene Simmons a craché du feu. Oui, le volume du spectacle était assourdissant. Et oui, il y avait un énorme panneau en toile de fond qui affichait le mot « KISS » tout au long du spectacle. Mais c'était tout ce qui restait du vieux Baiser. Le maquillage, autrefois marque de fabrique de Kiss, avait disparu. Tout comme le sang qui crachait. Mais en écoutant le groupe jouer et en regardant le spectacle sur scène, vous avez réalisé que Kiss, le groupe qui a lancé les spectacles sauvages qui sont si souvent copiés de nos jours, était toujours le meilleur dans ce domaine.
Le chanteur/guitariste Paul Stanley, qui avec Simmons sont les seuls membres restants du line-up original, a chanté d'une telle manière que même Ronnie James Dio aurait été impressionné. Son jeu de guitare, bien qu'il ne fasse pas partie de la ligue Eddie Van Halen, était fantastique.
Vinnie Vincent, qui a remplacé Ace Freyley à la guitare solo, est égal, sinon meilleur, à Frehley. Vincent a enflammé la scène avec des solos déchirants tout au long de la nuit, notamment sur Firehouse. Et le batteur Eric Carr, perché au sommet de la scène sur une batterie qui ressemblait à un tank (tourelle et tout), martelait avec excellence à maintes reprises. Son solo de batterie s'est terminé avec le tank tirant sur les haut-parleurs en surplomb avec une explosion massive.
En première partie, Riot et Vandenberg ont présenté des spectacles passables pour réchauffer la foule. Riot, qui fait quelques concerts d'ouverture de Van Halen sur la côte est, a attiré la foule avec des chansons comme Born in America et Swords and Tequilla, tandis que Vandenberg, du nom du guitariste principal Adrian Vandenberg, a joué un set de métal doux. Le point culminant du groupe a été le jeu de guitare de Vandenberg, qui, bien que pas encore populaire, est peut-être le meilleur guitariste du moment.

Notes: after "War Machine" someone throws something on the stage and Paul Stanley goes into a "we got an asshole over here" chastizing. This is a pretty good show, which is saying something because when it comes to KISS audience recordings are usually terrible, so pretty good is worth having for a fan.
