Paul maintained that it was much easier to write a 'disco hit' than it was to write a rock hit.  We go behind the masks to reveal how the world’s most famous glam rock band created their biggest international hit, from the KISS album Dynasty, and how it was the original line-up's last big hit, and how Gene Simmons wasn’t happy about this part."

After the solo albums, Kiss jumped back in to the studio in January/February 1979 and began work on their seventh studio album (the solo albums aren’t really considered Kiss Studio albums) to be called ‘Dynasty’. It was set up to be the return of Kiss as it was the band’s first “band” album since 1977’s Love Gun. I say “band” because by this point, “band” is a very loose term.

The band was having serious problems with Peter Criss at this point. Peter had hurt his hand in a car accident, he was heavy in to drugs and alcohol and he was basically difficult to work with. To help try and ease things with Peter, the band hired Vini Poncia as the producer as he produced Peter’s solo album so they thought it would make things easier…it didn’t! In fact, Vini did not feel’s Peter’s playing on the recordings was sub par…basically, it sucked. So, they brought in a drummer to do all the drum parts. His name was Anton Fig and he played drums on Ace’s solo album. Anton played on every song, but one. The one song Peter played on was the one he sang, “Dirty Livin'”. It would also be the last Kiss song he played on any album until 1998’s Pyscho Circus (which is a whole other story to be discussed much later in the series).


Thanks to the huge success of Ace’s solo album, he developed some major confidence and Gene and Paul knew he was the current fan favorite, So Ace got himself, not one, not two, but three songs on the album. Hell, he even sang more songs than Gene on this one. Not too shabby for someone whose confidence was not really that good back a few short years ago. He’d come a long way.

A lot of people consider this a “Disco” album (man, I’m using quotes a lot) based on the opening track “I Was Made For Lovin’ You” and first single, but the album is far from it. Yes, the album is a little more pop than what they had done before. However, it still rocked at times and that one song was really the only dance type song. I think the album gets a very unfair label as a result. Okay, the picture on the album sleeve with the multi-colored Kiss logo doesn’t really help the argument either.

Before we get to the album packaging, it is time to footnote a few things with Kiss at this time. The band went out and toured this album as the album itself was very successful, however, The Kiss image was changing in the public eye. With the Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park movie, with all the merchandising, Kiss was thought of now as a band for kids. Not a legitimate rock & roll band for the main concert going public. In fact, several of the shows on their tour had to be cancelled due to poor ticket sells. The Kiss “Dynasty” in the US was slipping. And one other thing to note, despite all the troubles with Peter during the recording of the album didn’t translate to the Tour. Peter played every show. I’m not saying it went smoothly, but Kiss as we knew was about to come to an end.


Let us talk about the album packaging for a minute. I have read that the album cover of the band is not really a single band shot. Each picture was taken individually and pieced together to make it appear as one band shot which, if true, is symbolic of the band’s turmoil behind the scenes. They would go on to keep that smoke & mirror routine going as long as they could as it would be years before people learned of the issues within the band and that most of the time, the band wasn’t really playing the instruments on the album.

Kiss had been putting special inserts in to their albums for a few years now and Dynasty kept that tradition going. For this album they included a wonderful Kiss Army merchandise form so you could mail off and order so many great Kiss items including the Kiss Pinball Machine. Man, I want one of those!!


They also included a band poster, however, this is the only thing missing from my copy of Dynasty. Yes, I am a little sad about that. I stole a picture off Discogs so you could see what it looked like.


Actually, it looks like the label on the vinyl as they used the same picture and not the usual Casablanca logo they had in the past. I think I’d rather see the band members anyway. Alright, I think we have rambled on for quite a while now so let us get to the main reason we are here…the music.


The opening track and first single was “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”. The song was written by Paul Stanley, Vini Poncia and the great Desmond Child makes his first of many appears with the band (only one on this album). The story goes that Disco was really big at the time and the record company wanted the band to be a little more commercial. Paul thought any idiot could write a disco song and a bet was made and a few hours later, the song was written and the Paul proved his point. The song went to #11 on the Billboard Hot 100. And as I mentioned earlier, the result was people thought this was a disco album. Wrong!! This song did have every trapping of a disco song, the tempo, the beat, the pop sound, the disco sound effects…I mean it was disco…but it was good and it was catchy and they still play it, but I still don’t know if I can give it full marks. Now on a side note, this is Gene’s least favorite song (and Peter and Ace hate it too).

The second track was the first of three Ace songs. The first was “2,000 Man” a cover of The Rolling Stones song. The song brought back the Kiss rock sound and a classic Ace sound with his guitar riffs blasting away. Ace plays all guitars and even the bass. Basically he did everything but the drums as those were Mr. Fig and as a result, the song sounds like it came right off his solo album which in my opinion is great thing. Killer track and great cover!!

Paul is back with the next track, “Sure Know Something” which he and Vini wrote as well. It incorporates some disco elements and was the band’s next single. It barely missed the top 40 as it clocked it at #47 on the Billboard Charts. I don’t really think this is a disco song. It has a great dirty bass groove and feels more R&B than disco. Of course, there are a lot of pop elements, but the tone and feel to me are more of the sound Paul had on his solo album. The chorus rocks out and it isn’t really a dance song so not sure why the disco label on this one.

The final song on Side 1 is “Dirty Livin'” which is Peter’s only appearance on the album…literally. The song was written by Peter Criss, Stan Penridge and Vini Poncia. The song is another one that was leftover from his early days with Stan in his band Lips and a leftover from his solo album as well. The song is definitely on the pop side and the song is softened up with those backing vocals added on the chorus. It has a nice solo by Ace to help it and it does fit Peter’s style so it might be a throwaway song, but at the same time, I kinda like it.


Side Two kicks off with Gene Simmons song “Charisma” he wrote with Howard Marks. The song is a heavier and darker song which has to be done to fit the Demon image. It is still softer than what we are used to hearing and Vini adds layer upon layer of vocals on the chorus to soften up. The subject matter is more cocky Gene bravado and when you throw in a sweet little Ace solo you have a decent Gene track.

Then Paul is back with another song that sounds like it could’ve been on his solo album called “Magic Touch”. A very poppy song, but Paul sounds great throughout and the chorus is nice. Paul even does the lead guitar on this one as well and he does a fine job.

Now Ace is back with another song called “Hard Times” which was written by Ace and is showing that he is getting more confident in everything he does. The song is about the rise of fame and the troubles it can bring. The guitar sounds like Ace and the bass on it is great which is Ace as well. It is another example of how bad things were with the band as Ace again does all guitars and bass and Anton on drums. All three of songs on here he does without help from any other member…the writing is on the wall!! If you listen to the lyrics, it sounds like he doesn’t want to be there in the band anymore and he is ready to go solo as he is on the right track and I would agree he is.

“X-Ray Eyes” is up next and it is Gene again (hell, only his 2nd). I don’t know if it is as good as “Charisma” from earlier, but it sounds like Gene. It even sounds like it could’ve been left over from his solo album as well as that seems to be a trend with this album. Were these all leftover tracks from their solo albums…hmmm? Looking back, was Gene even in to this album. He got 2 songs and only played bass on 5 of the 9 albums. Not much work there if you ask me.
Then Ace comes in to end the album on his third song “Save Your Love”. This is another great rocker with more damn fine guitar work, a great catchy chorus, strong backing vocals with Paul (and others) and Anton pounding away on those drums. Ace’s songs might be the saving grace on this album as all three of his songs were strong.

The Track Score is pretty good at 8 out of 9 Songs or 89%. You don’t get much better than this as a track score. However, the album is not the Kiss we had grown used to hearing. The Disco sound and influences on some songs hurt the image. The songs were softer and more pop and a lot of the heavy rock sound was gone. Which is really crazy if you think about the time with AC/DC and Van Halen tearing things up for them to go soft is nuts. They were chasing the chart success and nothing else. Regardless of that, it is still a solid album. I will still give it a 4.0 out of 5.0 Stars because if you are in the mood for something softer, this is still a great one to throw on. The only thing is I am so tired of “I Was Made For Lovin’ You” and I could do without that one. Maybe I’m tired of it as I spent a lot of time with it thanks to the next post.

Après les albums solo, Kiss retourne en studio en janvier/février 1979 et commence à travailler sur son septième album studio (les albums solo ne sont pas vraiment considérés comme des albums Kiss Studio) qui s'appellera "Dynasty". Il a été mis en place pour être le retour de Kiss car il s'agissait du premier album "groupe" du groupe depuis Love Gun en 1977. Je dis "bande" parce qu'à ce stade, "bande" est un terme très vague.

Le groupe avait de sérieux problèmes avec Peter Criss à ce stade. Peter s'était blessé à la main dans un accident de voiture, il consommait beaucoup de drogue et d'alcool et il était fondamentalement difficile de travailler avec lui. Pour essayer de faciliter les choses avec Peter, le groupe a embauché Vini Poncia en tant que producteur alors qu'il produisait l'album solo de Peter, alors ils ont pensé que cela faciliterait les choses... ce n'est pas le cas ! En fait, Vini n'avait pas l'impression que le jeu de Peter sur les enregistrements était en dessous de la moyenne… en gros, ça craignait. Alors, ils ont fait venir un batteur pour faire toutes les parties de batterie. Il s'appelait Anton Fig et il jouait de la batterie sur l'album solo d'Ace. Anton a joué sur toutes les chansons, sauf une. La seule chanson sur laquelle Peter a joué était celle qu'il a chantée, "Dirty Livin'". Ce serait également la dernière chanson de Kiss qu'il a jouée sur n'importe quel album jusqu'à Pyscho Circus en 1998 (qui est une toute autre histoire à discuter beaucoup plus tard dans la série).

Grâce à l'énorme succès de l'album solo d'Ace, il a développé une grande confiance et Gene et Paul savaient qu'il était le favori actuel des fans, alors Ace s'est procuré, non pas une, pas deux, mais trois chansons sur l'album. Enfer, il a même chanté plus de chansons que Gene sur celle-ci. Pas trop minable pour quelqu'un dont la confiance n'était pas vraiment bonne il y a quelques années. Il avait parcouru un long chemin.

Beaucoup de gens considèrent cet album comme un "Disco" (mec, j'utilise beaucoup de guillemets) basé sur le morceau d'ouverture "I Was Made For Lovin' You" et le premier single, mais l'album est loin d'être le cas. Oui, l'album est un peu plus pop que ce qu'ils avaient fait avant. Cependant, ça bougeait encore parfois et cette chanson était vraiment la seule chanson de type dance. Je pense que l'album obtient une étiquette très injuste en conséquence. D'accord, la photo sur la pochette de l'album avec le logo Kiss multicolore n'aide pas vraiment l'argument non plus.

Avant d'en venir à l'emballage de l'album, il est temps de noter quelques petites choses avec Kiss en ce moment. Le groupe est sorti et a tourné cet album car l'album lui-même était très réussi, cependant, l'image de The Kiss changeait aux yeux du public. Avec le film Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park, avec tout le merchandising, Kiss était désormais considéré comme un groupe pour enfants. Pas un groupe de rock & roll légitime pour le concert principal rendu public. En fait, plusieurs des spectacles de leur tournée ont dû être annulés en raison de mauvaises ventes de billets. La « Dynastie » Kiss aux États-Unis glissait. Et une autre chose à noter, malgré tous les problèmes avec Peter lors de l'enregistrement de l'album, cela ne s'est pas traduit par la tournée. Peter a joué tous les concerts. Je ne dis pas que ça s'est bien passé, mais Kiss, comme nous le savions, était sur le point de se terminer.

Parlons un peu de l'emballage de l'album. J'ai lu que la pochette de l'album du groupe n'est pas vraiment une photo d'un seul groupe. Chaque photo a été prise individuellement et reconstituée pour la faire apparaître comme un seul coup de groupe qui, s'il est vrai, est symbolique de l'agitation du groupe dans les coulisses. Ils continueraient à garder cette routine de fumée et de miroir aussi longtemps qu'ils le pourraient, car il faudrait des années avant que les gens n'apprennent les problèmes au sein du groupe et que la plupart du temps, le groupe ne jouait pas vraiment des instruments sur l'album. .

Kiss mettait des inserts spéciaux dans leurs albums depuis quelques années maintenant et Dynasty a maintenu cette tradition. Pour cet album, ils ont inclus un merveilleux formulaire de marchandise Kiss Army afin que vous puissiez envoyer et commander de nombreux articles Kiss, y compris le flipper Kiss. Mec, j'en veux un !!

Ils ont également inclus une affiche du groupe, cependant, c'est la seule chose qui manque à ma copie de Dynasty. Oui, je suis un peu triste à ce sujet. J'ai volé une photo sur Discogs pour que vous puissiez voir à quoi ça ressemblait.

En fait, cela ressemble à l'étiquette sur le vinyle car ils ont utilisé la même image et non le logo Casablanca habituel qu'ils avaient dans le passé. Je pense que je préférerais voir les membres du groupe de toute façon. D'accord, je pense que nous avons divagué depuis un bon moment maintenant, alors passons à la principale raison pour laquelle nous sommes ici… la musique.

FACE UN :
Le morceau d'ouverture et le premier single étaient "I Was Made For Lovin' You". L'histoire raconte que Disco était vraiment grand à l'époque et que la maison de disques voulait que le groupe soit un peu plus commercial. Paul pensait que n'importe quel idiot pouvait écrire une chanson disco et un pari a été fait et quelques heures plus tard, la chanson a été écrite et Paul a prouvé son point. La chanson est passée à la 11e place du Billboard Hot 100. Et comme je l'ai mentionné plus tôt, le résultat a été que les gens pensaient que c'était un album disco. Faux!! Cette chanson avait tous les pièges d'une chanson disco, le tempo, le rythme, le son pop, les effets sonores disco… Je veux dire que c'était disco… mais c'était bon et c'était accrocheur et ils la jouent toujours, mais je n'ai toujours pas Je ne sais pas si je peux lui donner toutes les notes. Maintenant, en passant, c'est la chanson la moins préférée de Gene (et Peter et Ace la détestent aussi).

La deuxième piste était la première des trois chansons d'Ace. Le premier était « 2 000 Man », une reprise de la chanson des Rolling Stones. La chanson a ramené le son rock de Kiss et un son classique d'Ace avec ses riffs de guitare qui explosent. Ace joue de toutes les guitares et même de la basse. La dernière chanson de la face 1 est "Dirty Livin'" qui est la seule apparition de Peter sur l'album... littéralement. La chanson a été écrite par Peter Criss, Stan Penridge et Vini Poncia. La chanson est une autre qui restait de ses débuts avec Stan dans son groupe Lips et un reste de son album solo également. La chanson est définitivement du côté pop et la chanson est adoucie avec ces chœurs ajoutés au refrain. Il y a un joli solo d'Ace pour l'aider et ça correspond au style de Peter donc c'est peut-être une chanson jetable, mais en même temps, j'aime bien ça.

FACE DEUX :
La face deux démarre avec la chanson "Charisma" de Gene Simmons qu'il a écrite avec Howard Marks. La chanson est une chanson plus lourde et plus sombre qui doit être faite pour correspondre à l'image de Demon. C'est toujours plus doux que ce que nous avons l'habitude d'entendre et Vini ajoute couche après couche de voix sur le refrain pour adoucir. Le sujet est plus arrogant avec la bravade de Gene et lorsque vous lancez un doux petit solo d'Ace, vous avez une piste Gene décente.

Ensuite, Paul est de retour avec une autre chanson qui sonne comme si elle aurait pu figurer sur son album solo intitulé "Magic Touch". Une chanson très pop, mais Paul sonne bien d'un bout à l'autre et le refrain est sympa. Paul fait même la guitare principale sur celui-ci également et il fait du bon travail.

Maintenant, Ace est de retour avec une autre chanson intitulée "Hard Times" qui a été écrite par Ace et montre qu'il devient plus confiant dans tout ce qu'il fait. La chanson parle de la montée en puissance de la célébrité et des problèmes qu'elle peut apporter. La guitare sonne comme Ace et la basse est excellente, ce qui est aussi Ace. C'est un autre exemple de la façon dont les choses allaient mal avec le groupe, car Ace fait à nouveau toutes les guitares et toutes les basses et Anton à la batterie. Il fait les trois chansons ici sans l'aide d'aucun autre membre… l'écriture est sur le mur !! Si vous écoutez les paroles, on dirait qu'il ne veut plus être là dans le groupe et qu'il est prêt à se lancer en solo car il est sur la bonne voie et je suis d'accord qu'il l'est.

"X-Ray Eyes" est le suivant et c'est encore Gene (enfer, seulement son 2e). Je ne sais pas si c'est aussi bon que "Charisma" de tout à l'heure, mais ça sonne comme Gene. On dirait même que cela aurait pu être un reste de son album solo et cela semble être une tendance avec cet album. S'agissait-il de tous les morceaux restants de leurs albums solo… hmmm? Avec le recul, Gene était-il même dans cet album. Il a obtenu 2 chansons et n'a joué de la basse que sur 5 des 9 albums. Pas beaucoup de travail là-bas si vous me demandez.

Puis Ace arrive pour terminer l'album sur sa troisième chanson "Save Your Love". C'est un autre grand rocker avec un travail de guitare plus fin, un chœur accrocheur, des chœurs puissants avec Paul (et d'autres) et Anton martelant à la batterie. Les chansons d'Ace pourraient être la grâce salvatrice de cet album car ses trois chansons étaient fortes.

Le score de piste est assez bon à 8 chansons sur 9 ou 89%. Vous n'obtenez pas beaucoup mieux que cela comme score de piste. Cependant, l'album n'est pas le Kiss que nous avions l'habitude d'entendre. Le son et les influences Disco sur certaines chansons nuisent à l'image. Les chansons étaient plus douces et plus pop et une grande partie du son rock lourd avait disparu. Ce qui est vraiment fou si vous pensez au temps où AC/DC et Van Halen déchiraient les choses pour qu'ils deviennent doux, c'est fou. Ils chassaient le succès des charts et rien d'autre. Quoi qu'il en soit, cela reste un album solide. Je lui donnerai quand même un 4,0 étoiles sur 5,0 parce que si vous avez envie de quelque chose de plus doux, c'est toujours un excellent choix. La seule chose, c'est que j'en ai tellement marre de "I Was Made For Lovin' You" et que je pourrais m'en passer. Peut-être que j'en ai marre car j'y ai passé beaucoup de temps grâce au prochain post.

Je ne suis pas d'accord avec la note globale de l'album et le vote positif pour deux-trois titres mais en revanche je suis totalement d'accord sur les commentaires principaux.
L'absence de Peter qui est perdu pour Kiss mais aussi le manque d'implication de Gene...
Paul qui continue dans la parfaite lignée de son album solo avec trois titres disco-R&B-pop... Même si on peut aimer ces titres, on est bien loin du style de Kiss et du hard des premiers albums du groupe !
Ace qui continue également dans la droite lignée de son album solo et qui justement à cette période est le seul a sauvé la crédibilité "hard" du groupe avec son excellent travail et l'autonomie prise sur ses trois titres.

As a Bonus Edition to The Kiss Review Series, we are going to look at a couple singles I have for the Song “I Was Made For Lovin’ You” off the band’s 1979 album, ‘Dynasty’. The song was a commercial success for the band reaching all the way to the #11 slot on the Billboard Hot 100 and one of only a handful of times they have broke the Top 40.

The music, however, was quite a departure for the band. The song was labeled as Disco and if you listen to it, it really was. The song was written by Paul Stanley, Vini Poncia and the great Desmond Child makes his first of many appears with the band (only one on this album). The story goes that Disco was really big at the time and the record company wanted the band to be a little more commercial. Paul thought any idiot could write a disco song and a bet was made and a few hours later, the song was written and the Paul proved his point. This song did have every trapping of a disco song, the tempo, the beat, the pop sound, the disco sound effects…I mean it was disco…but it was good and it was catchy and they still play it live today. Now on a side note, this is Gene’s least favorite song (and Peter and Ace hate it too).

I have two versions of the Single. I have the Radio Edit 45 Single with “Hard Times” as the B-Side and I have the 12″ Dance Mix with “Charisma as the B-Side. First we will talk about the 7” Single, which might be the Radio edit.


The 7″ Single was cut down by about 30 seconds to 3:57 and was released in May 1979. Don’t let Wikipedia fool you as this song was not released in 1978 which would’ve been a full year before Dynasty’s release and even before the Solo Albums. The major differences were a shortened entrance to the song and a reduction to the harmonies after the guitar solo. Otherwise, basically the same.

With Ace on an upswing, the stuck “Hard Times” as the B-Side. The song was written by Ace and is showcase of how he is getting more confident in everything he does. The song is about the rise of fame and the troubles it can bring. The guitar sounds like Ace and the bass on it is great which is Ace as well.

The other single I have in my collection for this song is the 12″ Dance Remix. The song is stretched out to 7:54 which is a very long time for this song. And let me tell you, they ramped up the disco on this version even more. They extended the entrance, they stretched out drum parts, they repeated parts, they did everything the could to extend the song and pushed the limits of how much you could take on hearing this song.

The B-Side on this one was from Gene and it was the album track “Charisma”. The song is a heavier and darker song which has to be done to fit the Demon image. Now I am proud to say, my copy of this album was sealed. That is right, it was a 40 year old virgin and never been played. That is until I got my hands on it. I believe music is made to be heard and I had to hear what the extended version sounded like. There might be some that think it should have stay sealed, but fate put it in my hands so that was going to happen.

Maintenant, en passant, c'est la chanson la moins préférée de Gene (et Peter et Ace la détestent aussi).

J'ai deux versions du Single. J'ai le single Radio Edit 45 avec "Hard Times" comme face B et j'ai le mix Dance 12″ avec "Charisma" comme face B. Nous parlerons d'abord du single 7 pouces, qui pourrait être le montage radio.

Le single 7 ″ a été réduit d'environ 30 secondes à 3:57 et est sorti en mai 1979. Ne laissez pas Wikipedia vous tromper car cette chanson n'est pas sortie en 1978, ce qui aurait été un an avant la sortie de Dynasty et même avant les albums solo. Les principales différences étaient une entrée raccourcie de la chanson et une réduction des harmonies après le solo de guitare. Sinon, fondamentalement la même chose.

Avec Ace sur une reprise, le "Hard Times" bloqué en tant que B-Side. La chanson a été écrite par Ace et montre comment il devient plus confiant dans tout ce qu'il fait. La chanson parle de la montée en puissance de la célébrité et des problèmes qu'elle peut apporter. La guitare sonne comme Ace et la basse est excellente, ce qui est aussi Ace.

L'autre single que j'ai dans ma collection pour cette chanson est le 12″ Dance Remix. La chanson s'étire jusqu'à 7:54 ce qui est très long pour cette chanson. Et laissez-moi vous dire qu'ils ont encore intensifié la discothèque sur cette version. Ils ont prolongé l'entrée, ils ont étiré des parties de batterie, ils ont répété des parties, ils ont fait tout leur possible pour prolonger la chanson et ont repoussé les limites de ce que vous pouviez supporter en entendant cette chanson.

Le B-Side sur celui-ci était de Gene et c'était la piste de l'album "Charisma". La chanson est une chanson plus lourde et plus sombre qui doit être faite pour correspondre à l'image de Demon. C'est toujours plus doux que ce que nous avons l'habitude d'entendre et Vini ajoute couche après couche de voix sur le refrain pour adoucir. Le sujet est plus arrogant avec la bravade de Gene et lorsque vous lancez un doux petit solo d'Ace, vous avez une piste Gene décente.

Maintenant, je suis fier de dire que ma copie de cet album était scellée. C'est vrai, c'était une vierge de 40 ans et elle n'a jamais été jouée. C'est jusqu'à ce que je mette la main dessus. Je crois que la musique est faite pour être entendue et je devais entendre à quoi ressemblait la version étendue. Certains pourraient penser qu'il aurait dû rester scellé, mais le destin l'a mis entre mes mains pour que cela se produise.
