Gene Simmons Accuses Peter Criss Of Sabotaging KISS

When the going gets tough, the tough get going, and they sure did! After a certain point, KISS bandmates Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Ace Frehley had to make the difficult call to distance Peter Criss from the band to avoid further damage at the end of the ’70s. During a recent interview with Rock Candy, Simmons gave insight into how they came through that turbulent time as a band.
Simmons and Stanley often looked through the same lens, whereas Frehley and Criss were, some would say, troublemakers. Like most other acts, their inner struggle was affecting the flow of the band, especially with Criss, as it had gotten to the point where he couldn’t control his drug and alcohol intake.
There were many times that triggered the guys, one of them being when the drummer decided to gesture to Paul Stanley to slow down the tempo mid-song in one of their last shows of the Dynasty Tour. This move that came from Peter was a clear indication that the band was on its last legs. Soon after that incident, Gene and Paul were inclined to put KISS first above any of the band members.
Gene Simmons’s words to Andrew Daly read:
“On one occasion, Ace said, ‘I can’t come down today, guys. I’ve got a card game.’ What were we supposed to do? The answer was we had to get other people. And like Ace, Peter had his demons. We all understand or at least suspect what drugs and alcohol can do to you. But you’d like to think that the people around you will prevent you from going down that route.
Or at least it will prevent you from doing a lot of it. That just didn’t happen with Peter. We held out as long as we could, but it got to the point where he was sabotaging the band. The three of us — me, Paul, and Ace — voted to remove Peter from KISS.”
That was the end with Peter Criss. Although most may assume there would be someone to help guide people struggling with substances, that isn’t always the case. When the band noticed it wasn’t going to get better, they had to settle on removing Criss from the band. Do you think it was the right decision for KISS, or were you a Peter Criss stan?
