If there is one thing I love to find and that is Kiss Bootlegs. I was out on Record Store Day, in line to check out with my RSD vinyl when I looked down and to my left and at the bottom of this shelf were a handful of bootlegs. 2 Van Halen boots and 1 Kiss. Well, all three are mine now and first up we have the Kiss Bootleg, Alive! in Amityville 1973. It was recorded at the Daisy in Amityville, NY on June 16, 1973. It says it is an audience recording, but I’ve read else where it is a soundboard recording, but either way…it is a recording and I have it. The sound quality is actually quite good as it has been remastered and repaired as it says on the back cover.

The really cool thing about this album is that this is about 8 months before the debut album ‘Kiss’ came out in 1974. You can’t get much earlier than this with Kiss recordings. Except maybe the Coventry shows. This is the original line-up of Gene Simons, Paul Stanley, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. The band didn’t form until late January 1973, so we are only 6 months in to the life of this band. A lot of these songs you know as they did get released, but not all of them made to recording stages. Heck, the band hasn’t even been signed yet and Bill Aucoin isn’t even in the picture at this point. Really cool stuff. Let’s check this show out.

SIDE 1:

First up is the song “Nothin’ to Lose” and it sounds like the song from the debut. You have both Gene and Peter and they attack this song with a vicious ferocity. The lyrics don’t match up perfectly and it seems a little scattered as some of the arrangement does differ from the final studio version, but you do recognize it for what it is. The band is killing it as you can feel the energy and excitement in their playing.

The strange thing is that Peter seems to do most of the talking between songs. He does a great job, but it is weird not hearing Paul. Then we get the song “Firehouse” which seems to have Gene and Paul on vocals. The song sounds like you’d expect, but it isn’t quite the same. There is a strange scream before the chorus, and extra long drum part and the guitar solo from Ace sounds nothing like the one from the studio version. They didn’t have a siren so the end is Peter hitting the cymbals to make that sound. But still so cool to hear it played this way.

The next track is one I’ve never heard before, ever. It is called “Life in the Woods” and it is almost 8 minutes of riffing as it is a guitar heavy song. It was originally titled “Want You Beside” and written by Paul. The song has Paul yelling at the crowd to get up and get moving. There are a lot of harmonies at the beginning with Paul and Peter and then the band comes full force in. There is a break in it where they are screaming “Life in the Woods” and honestly I don’t know who is singing it as it doesn’t sound like any of the guys. And Peter seems to take over the vocals at the end and let’s out an F Bomb at the end. It is a strange song and doesn’t sound like they really know what to do with it as it is all over the place. I don’t think the song really works well and within a month or so, they stopped playing this one which is great because it is awful.

The final track on side 1 is the old Wicked Lester song “Simple Type”. This one I have heard before and have the studio version of the track on a bootleg or two. Ace opens this one with a great riff and then they lay down a cool groove while Ace throws out riffs all over the place. The studio song is less than 3 minutes I believe but this goes on for over 7 minutes. You have both Paul and Gene on vocals and I have to admit this doesn’t sound like the “Simple Type” song I remember from other bootlegs. This one is more of a rocker and the guys are letting all hang out on this one. Ace is really tearing things up here. What drags this song for 7 minutes is the cool jam section and I like to see the boys do that. Now, on the vocals so far, it seems like most of the songs have had two different people in each song singing…this would later become, one song, one voice except for may “Rock & Roll All Nite” and very few others. It’s nice to see more of a band focus here.

SIDE 2 :

The first song up is “Acrobat” which is a part of two songs one of which would become “Love Theme from Kiss” off the debut and the other is called “Much Too Young” which was a Gene idea that never materialized. Most of the song is an instrumental, but there are some lyrics with the “Much Too Young” part. Mid way through, Peter gets a drum break and then Ace gets to let loose as well. If you have the Kiss Box Set, this recording of “Acrobat” is in there and it is attributed to the August Daisy shows, but there is some disagreement on that front. I don’t know or care which is true.

Next up is the classic song “Deuce” and this will sound familiar. It is basically the album version, but maybe some tweaks to the ending. Come on, you know it isn’t going to match perfectly. Gene is on vocals, liked you’d expect, and he tears it up. It is Gene, all dark and menacing. This feels like the Kiss I know and love.
“100,000 Years” is another off the debut album and you get what you expect here. You get Gene’s opening bass line which is so recognizable and then Paul comes in on vocals. Paul’s vocals are stellar and hits those high notes perfectly. And then throw in Ace’s blistering guitar work and you have a masterpiece. The biggest difference is Paul’s lyrics at the end are completely different and he even tells the woman he’s speaking to in the lyrics to give him head!! Okay, that’s different.

The famous guitar lick kicks in and you know it is time for “Watchin’ You”. Gene’s on vocals and they are a little rough as he’s screaming too loud in to the mic at first, but it gets better. This song sounds like the final version and it is such a killer tune and great to hear live.

The final track we have here is “Let Me Know” which sees Gene and Paul trade off on the vocals. It is a fun song and a little more poppy. It is basically the old song “Sunday Driver” which Paul had written. I really like this song and I love it when those two trade off on vocals. It is something they should’ve done more of through their career.

And there you have it. Another cool piece in Kisstory. I will point out that this bootleg of the show appears to be missing the songs “Black Diamond” and “Strutter” so if I ever find another version of this show and those two songs are on it, I’ll have to grab it. Otherwise, this set is awesome. I really love it. The sound quality is actually phenomenal so whatever they did to clean it up worked beautifully. I can see myself pulling this one out again and again. My Overall Score is a 5.0 out of 5.0 Stars. There is nothing negative I really have to say about this one. Yeah, “Life in the Woods” isn’t a great song, but how cool is it to have a recording of it when the band never actually recorded this song. If you see this one, you need to grab it.

S'il y a une chose que j'aime trouver, c'est Kiss Bootlegs. J'étais sorti le Record Store Day, en ligne pour vérifier avec mon vinyle RSD quand j'ai regardé en bas et à ma gauche et au bas de cette étagère se trouvaient une poignée de bootlegs. 2 bottes Van Halen et 1 Kiss. Eh bien, tous les trois sont à moi maintenant et tout d'abord, nous avons le Kiss Bootleg, Alive! à Amityville en 1973. Il a été enregistré au Daisy à Amityville, NY le 16 juin 1973. Il est dit que c'est un enregistrement d'audience, mais j'ai lu ailleurs où c'est un enregistrement de table d'harmonie, mais de toute façon… c'est un enregistrement et Je l'ai. La qualité sonore est en fait assez bonne car il a été remasterisé et réparé comme il est indiqué sur la pochette arrière.

Ce qui est vraiment cool avec cet album, c'est que c'est environ 8 mois avant la sortie du premier album "Kiss" en 1974. Vous ne pouvez pas arriver beaucoup plus tôt que cela avec les enregistrements de Kiss. Sauf peut-être les spectacles de Coventry. Il s'agit de la composition originale de Gene Simons, Paul Stanley, Peter Criss et Ace Frehley. Le groupe ne s'est formé que fin janvier 1973, nous ne sommes donc qu'à 6 mois de la vie de ce groupe. Beaucoup de ces chansons que vous connaissez ont été publiées, mais toutes n'ont pas été enregistrées. Heck, le groupe n'a même pas encore été signé et Bill Aucoin n'est même pas sur la photo à ce stade. Des trucs vraiment cool. Vérifions ce spectacle.

FACE 1 :
La première est la chanson "Nothin' to Lose" et elle ressemble à la chanson des débuts. Vous avez à la fois Gene et Peter et ils attaquent cette chanson avec une férocité vicieuse. Les paroles ne correspondent pas parfaitement et elles semblent un peu dispersées car certains arrangements diffèrent de la version finale du studio, mais vous le reconnaissez pour ce qu'il est. Le groupe est en train de tuer car vous pouvez sentir l'énergie et l'excitation dans leur jeu.

Ce qui est étrange, c'est que Peter semble faire la plupart des conversations entre les chansons. Il fait un excellent travail, mais c'est bizarre de ne pas entendre Paul. Ensuite, nous obtenons la chanson "Firehouse" qui semble avoir Gene et Paul au chant. La chanson ressemble à ce que vous attendez, mais ce n'est pas tout à fait la même chose. Il y a un cri étrange avant le refrain, et une partie de batterie extra longue et le solo de guitare d'Ace ne ressemble en rien à celui de la version studio. Ils n'avaient pas de sirène, donc à la fin, Peter frappe les cymbales pour faire ce son. Mais toujours aussi cool de l'entendre jouer de cette façon.

Le morceau suivant est celui que je n'ai jamais entendu auparavant, jamais. Il s'appelle "Life in the Woods" et c'est presque 8 minutes de riffing car c'est une chanson lourde de guitare. Il était à l'origine intitulé "Want You Beside" et écrit par Paul. Dans la chanson, Paul crie à la foule de se lever et de bouger. Il y a beaucoup d'harmonies au début avec Paul et Peter, puis le groupe arrive en force. Il y a une pause où ils crient "Life in the Woods" et honnêtement, je ne sais pas qui le chante comme ça ne ressemble à aucun des gars. Et Peter semble reprendre le chant à la fin et sort une bombe F à la fin. C'est une chanson étrange et on dirait qu'ils ne savent pas vraiment quoi en faire car elle est partout. Je ne pense pas que la chanson fonctionne vraiment bien et au bout d'un mois environ, ils ont arrêté de jouer celle-ci, ce qui est génial car c'est affreux.

Le dernier morceau de la face 1 est l'ancienne chanson de Wicked Lester "Simple Type". Celui-ci, je l'ai déjà entendu et j'ai la version studio du morceau sur un bootleg ou deux. Ace ouvre celui-ci avec un super riff, puis ils établissent un groove cool pendant qu'Ace lance des riffs partout. La chanson studio dure moins de 3 minutes je crois mais cela dure plus de 7 minutes. Vous avez à la fois Paul et Gene au chant et je dois admettre que cela ne ressemble pas à la chanson "Simple Type" dont je me souviens d'autres bootlegs. Celui-ci est plus un rocker et les gars se laissent tous traîner sur celui-ci. Ace est vraiment en train de déchirer les choses ici. Ce qui traîne cette chanson pendant 7 minutes, c'est la section jam cool et j'aime voir les garçons faire ça. Maintenant, sur le chant jusqu'à présent, il semble que la plupart des chansons aient eu deux personnes différentes dans chaque chanson chantant… cela deviendra plus tard, une chanson, une voix sauf pour mai "Rock & Roll All Nite" et très peu d'autres. C'est agréable de voir plus d'un groupe se concentrer ici.

FACE 2 :
La première chanson est "Acrobat" qui fait partie de deux chansons dont l'une deviendrait "Love Theme from Kiss" dès le début et l'autre s'appelle "Much Too Young" qui était une idée de Gene qui ne s'est jamais concrétisée. La plupart de la chanson est instrumentale, mais il y a quelques paroles avec la partie "Much Too Young". À mi-parcours, Peter obtient une pause de batterie, puis Ace se déchaîne également. Si vous avez le Kiss Box Set, cet enregistrement de "Acrobat" est là et il est attribué aux émissions d'August Daisy, mais il y a un certain désaccord sur ce front. Je ne sais pas ou ne me soucie pas de ce qui est vrai.

La prochaine étape est la chanson classique "Deuce" et cela vous semblera familier. C'est essentiellement la version de l'album, mais peut-être quelques ajustements à la fin. Allez, vous savez que ça ne va pas parfaitement correspondre. Gene est au chant, comme vous vous en doutez, et il le déchire. C'est Gene, tout sombre et menaçant. Cela ressemble au Baiser que je connais et que j'aime.
"100 000 ans" est un autre album du premier album et vous obtenez ici ce que vous attendez. Vous obtenez la première ligne de basse de Gene qui est si reconnaissable, puis Paul intervient au chant. La voix de Paul est stellaire et atteint parfaitement ces notes aiguës. Et puis ajoutez le travail de guitare époustouflant d'Ace et vous avez un chef-d'œuvre. La plus grande différence est que les paroles de Paul à la fin sont complètement différentes et il dit même à la femme à qui il parle dans les paroles de lui donner la tête !! D'accord, c'est différent.

Le fameux léchage de guitare entre en jeu et vous savez qu'il est temps pour "Watchin' You". Gene est au chant et ils sont un peu durs car il crie trop fort dans le micro au début, mais ça va mieux. Cette chanson sonne comme la version finale et c'est un morceau tellement tueur et agréable à entendre en direct.

Le dernier morceau que nous avons ici est "Let Me Know" qui voit Gene et Paul échanger sur le chant. C'est une chanson amusante et un peu plus pop. C'est essentiellement la vieille chanson "Sunday Driver" que Paul avait écrite. J'aime vraiment cette chanson et j'adore quand ces deux-là échangent sur le chant. C'est quelque chose qu'ils auraient dû faire davantage tout au long de leur carrière.

Et voila. Une autre pièce cool dans Kisstory. Je soulignerai que ce bootleg de l'émission semble manquer les chansons "Black Diamond" et "Strutter", donc si jamais je trouve une autre version de cette émission et que ces deux chansons y sont, je devrai la saisir. Sinon, cet ensemble est génial. Je l'aime vraiment. La qualité sonore est en fait phénoménale, donc tout ce qu'ils ont fait pour le nettoyer a fonctionné à merveille. Je me vois sortir celui-ci encore et encore. Ma note globale est de 5,0 étoiles sur 5,0. Il n'y a rien de négatif que j'ai vraiment à dire à propos de celui-ci. Ouais, "Life in the Woods" n'est pas une bonne chanson, mais c'est cool d'en avoir un enregistrement alors que le groupe n'a jamais enregistré cette chanson. Si vous voyez celui-ci, vous devez le saisir.

J'ai acheté très récemment cet album... mais j'avoue ne pas l'avoir encore écouté.

Comme par rapport à la critique ci-dessus, il semble particulièrement intéressant, je vais voir s'il existe en version CD afin de conserver le vinyle neuf et dans son cellophane d'origine.

If you are thinking, “John, you’ve reviewed this show before”. You would be right. I reviewed it about a 1 1/2 years ago. But this one is different…it has a different cover and from a different manufacturer. In my quest to get as many Kiss Bootleg’s I can, I found this one in a local record show, new and sealed. And cheap. This is actually an easy one to get if you are collecting Kiss Bootlegs. I think I paid $20 for it. When I saw it, I knew I had this show, but I really liked the cover and this one has clear vinyl. Otherwise, there is nothing really special about this one, no inserts, no picture sleeves and no surprised in the package like I have received in a lot of my bootlegs. This one is rather generic. For historical reasons though, it is pretty cool. The recording is an FM Broadcast from April 18, 1974 in Memphis, TN at the Lafayette Music Room and is one of the earliest recordings of the band.

Soundwise…well…let’s just say there is sound. This is a recording off a radio broadcast on to a tape. That tape was then copied, which was then copied, which was then copied, which was then copied and keep going for another dozen copies. There is a massive tape drag at several points during the show which slows the song down and it is quite noticeable. That proves that the source material was from an old tape that had been copied many times. Yes, the sound sucks at times and might be on the low end of some of my bootlegs, but I am still okay with it and because I collect them I will buy regardless.

If you look at the setlist, you will notice a few things stand out. One is they basically played the entire debut album with a few minor exceptions. Two, they play the song “She” which won’t come out until 2 albums later on ‘Dressed to Kill’. And Three, they play a song called “Acrobat” which is actually the basis for the song “Love Theme From Kiss” from the first album. This is two months after the debut album release, so it is strange they played the “Acrobat” version and not the album version.

SIDE A:

The album and set opens with “Deuce” and boy can you hear the tape drag on this one, pretty drastic. But you can still make out the song and hear Gene just fine as it is in the instruments where you have the issues. Nothing is real clear except the vocals. Towards the end of the song, it clears up and gets a little louder and that cowbell comes in nicely. “Strutter” is up next after a slight pause and you get more wobbly instruments and even a little on the vocals this time around. Paul sounds like he is singing the song so much slower. Again, you are buying this strictly for the historical value…that is what I keep telling myself anyway.

“Firehouse” sounds great and I happy with that version. It is an untouched, live version warts and all and it is quite enjoyable. Ace’s solo sounds good and you get a glimpse of the band doing what they do best with no real hiccups. The cool song on here is “She” as I said it hadn’t even been released yet on an album. The guitar opening on it sounds a little slower and I am guessing that is the tape drag as there is a lot of wobble. But vocally again, sounds good. Gene is menacing as ever and Paul on background duties. The coolest part is the instrumental break/guitar solo as it isn’t what we get later. This the reason to buy this release if you need one. And last up for Side 1 is the badass song “Nothin’ to Lose”. And by this time you are used to the wobble and so it starts sounding pretty decent (okay, decent enough). I love this song as you get both Gene and Peter on vocals (and Paul is heard pretty good on backing vocals). I love Peter’s gritty and raspy old school singing on this one. Always fun.

SIDE 2:

Side 2 kicks off with the Ace Frehley penned song “Cold Gin” (after the radio DJ does a station break), but with Gene on vocals as Ace wasn’t singing this early on in the band. Now, I did get to see Ace do this one this past Summer when he opened for Alice Cooper but that is another story. I really love this song but I will say this version seemed a little flat and not sure if that was the band or the recording itself. After a little tuning, we get Gene’s bass and some thumps until they become “100,000 Years”. Paul sounds fresh and youthful and can do some great ooh-yeahs back then.

Another favorite of mine to hear live is “Black Diamond” even with a DJ interrupting the opening notes for a station break. The tape is wobbly again as it sounds a little funky and messed up, but it is still “Black Diamond”. I love the slow opening and then the bombastic explosion for the rest of the song. Plus, the instrumental break and solo are always great. An all around fantastic song every time I hear it. The song ends the broadcast. Then the show announcer comes back and the band is tuning their instruments a little they go in to what is labeled as “Acrobat” but it cuts out the “Love Theme From Kiss” parts off and is just the band jamming. Peter has a little drum solo piece then the band kicks in and they jam out, all instrumentally and then they start singing only a little. There are very few lyrics and they sing “You’re much too young” a couple times and then they go back to jamming and we get a killer guitar solo piece as well. Then Paul says “Good Night” and it is all over. Fun track.

Despite the tape drag and the wobbly sound in out at times throughout, I still find this an enjoyable most especially for an early version of “She” and for the encore with “Acrobat”. It is also a cool historical piece to have anything live and uncut from 1974 with them really just getting going. All-in-all, it turned out to be an okay show as you get used to the sound issues and you enjoy it for what it is. I can’t give it too high of a score, but I will give it at least a 2.5 out of 5.0 Stars (but it should get more for the two songs I mentioned – maybe a 3.0 to 3.5…but that might be too generous).

Si vous pensez, "John, vous avez revu cette émission avant". Vous auriez raison. Je l'ai revu il y a environ 1 an et demi. Mais celui-ci est différent… il a une couverture différente et d'un fabricant différent. Dans ma quête pour obtenir autant de Kiss Bootleg que possible, j'ai trouvé celui-ci dans une émission de disques locale, neuf et scellé. Et pas cher. C'est en fait facile à obtenir si vous collectionnez Kiss Bootlegs. Je pense que je l'ai payé 20 $. Quand je l'ai vu, je savais que j'avais ce spectacle, mais j'ai vraiment aimé la pochette et celle-ci est en vinyle transparent. Sinon, il n'y a rien de vraiment spécial à propos de celui-ci, pas d'inserts, pas de pochettes illustrées et pas de surprise dans le colis comme j'en ai reçu dans beaucoup de mes bootlegs. Celui-ci est plutôt générique. Pour des raisons historiques cependant, c'est plutôt cool. L'enregistrement est une émission FM du 18 avril 1974 à Memphis, TN au Lafayette Music Room et est l'un des premiers enregistrements du groupe.

Au niveau du son… eh bien… disons simplement qu'il y a du son. Il s'agit d'un enregistrement d'une émission de radio sur une bande. Cette bande a ensuite été copiée, qui a ensuite été copiée, qui a ensuite été copiée, qui a ensuite été copiée et continue pour une autre douzaine de copies. Il y a une traînée de bande massive à plusieurs moments du spectacle, ce qui ralentit la chanson et c'est assez perceptible. Cela prouve que le matériel source provenait d'une vieille bande qui avait été copiée plusieurs fois. Oui, le son est parfois nul et peut être dans le bas de certains de mes bootlegs, mais je suis toujours d'accord avec ça et parce que je les collectionne, j'achèterai quand même.

Si vous regardez la setlist, vous remarquerez que certaines choses se démarquent. La première est qu'ils ont essentiellement joué tout le premier album à quelques exceptions mineures près. Deux, ils jouent la chanson « She » qui ne sortira que 2 albums plus tard sur « Dressed to Kill ». Et Three, ils jouent une chanson intitulée "Acrobat" qui est en fait la base de la chanson "Love Theme From Kiss" du premier album. C'est deux mois après la sortie du premier album, il est donc étrange qu'ils aient joué la version "Acrobat" et non la version album.

FACE A:
L'album et le set s'ouvrent sur "Deuce" et vous pouvez entendre la bande traîner sur celui-ci, assez drastique. Mais vous pouvez toujours distinguer la chanson et entendre Gene très bien car c'est dans les instruments où vous avez des problèmes. Rien n'est vraiment clair sauf le chant. Vers la fin de la chanson, ça s'éclaircit et devient un peu plus fort et cette cloche de vache arrive bien. "Strutter" est le suivant après une légère pause et vous obtenez des instruments plus bancaux et même un peu sur le chant cette fois-ci. Paul a l'air de chanter la chanson beaucoup plus lentement. Encore une fois, vous achetez cela strictement pour la valeur historique… c'est ce que je n'arrête pas de me dire de toute façon.

"Firehouse" sonne bien et je suis content de cette version. C'est une version intacte, live verrues et tout et c'est assez agréable. Le solo d'Ace sonne bien et vous avez un aperçu du groupe qui fait ce qu'il fait le mieux sans véritable accroc. La chanson cool ici est "She" comme je l'ai dit, elle n'était même pas encore sortie sur un album. L'ouverture de la guitare sonne un peu plus lentement et je suppose que c'est la traînée de la bande car il y a beaucoup d'oscillations. Mais vocalement encore, ça sonne bien. Gene est plus menaçant que jamais et Paul sur des devoirs de fond. La partie la plus cool est le break instrumental / solo de guitare car ce n'est pas ce que nous aurons plus tard. C'est la raison d'acheter cette version si vous en avez besoin. Et le dernier pour la face 1 est la chanson badass "Nothin' to Lose". Et à ce moment-là, vous êtes habitué à l'oscillation et donc ça commence à sonner assez décent (d'accord, assez décent). J'adore cette chanson car vous avez à la fois Gene et Peter au chant (et Paul se fait plutôt bien entendre au chœur). J'adore le chant granuleux et râpeux de la vieille école de Peter sur celui-ci. Toujours amusant.

FACE B :
La face 2 démarre avec la chanson écrite par Ace Frehley "Cold Gin" (après que le DJ de la radio ait fait une pause dans la station), mais avec Gene au chant car Ace ne chantait pas si tôt dans le groupe. Maintenant, j'ai pu voir Ace faire celui-ci l'été dernier quand il a ouvert pour Alice Cooper mais c'est une autre histoire. J'aime vraiment cette chanson mais je dirai que cette version semblait un peu plate et je ne sais pas si c'était le groupe ou l'enregistrement lui-même. Après un petit réglage, on obtient la basse de Gene et quelques coups jusqu'à ce qu'ils deviennent "100 000 ans". Paul a l'air frais et jeune et peut faire de super ooh-ouais à l'époque.

Un autre de mes préférés à entendre en direct est "Black Diamond", même avec un DJ interrompant les notes d'ouverture pour une pause à la station. La bande est à nouveau bancale car elle sonne un peu funky et foirée, mais c'est toujours "Black Diamond". J'adore l'ouverture lente puis l'explosion explosive pour le reste de la chanson. De plus, le break instrumental et le solo sont toujours excellents. Une chanson fantastique à chaque fois que je l'entends. La chanson met fin à l'émission. Ensuite, l'annonceur de l'émission revient et le groupe accorde un peu ses instruments, ils entrent dans ce qui est étiqueté comme "Acrobat" mais cela supprime les parties "Love Theme From Kiss" et c'est juste le groupe qui s'embrouille. Peter a un petit morceau solo de batterie, puis le groupe entre en scène et ils sortent, tous instrumentalement, puis ils commencent à chanter un peu. Il y a très peu de paroles et ils chantent "You're much too young" plusieurs fois, puis ils recommencent à jouer et nous obtenons également un solo de guitare qui tue. Puis Paul dit "Bonne nuit" et tout est fini. Piste amusante.

Malgré la traînée de bande et le son vacillant à certains moments, je trouve toujours cela agréable, surtout pour une première version de "She" et pour le rappel avec "Acrobat". C'est aussi une pièce historique cool d'avoir quelque chose en direct et non coupé de 1974 avec eux qui commencent vraiment. Dans l'ensemble, cela s'est avéré être un bon spectacle car vous vous habituez aux problèmes de son et vous l'appréciez pour ce qu'il est. Je ne peux pas lui donner une note trop élevée, mais je lui donnerai au moins 2,5 étoiles sur 5,0 (mais il devrait en avoir plus pour les deux chansons que j'ai mentionnées - peut-être un 3,0 à 3,5… mais c'est peut-être trop généreux ).

J'ai également acheté très récemment ce vinyle et ne l'ai pas encore écouté.

Comme indiqué dans la chronique, le tarif pour ce type d'album en version vinyle reste très abordable (une vingtaine d'euros)... La pochette est sympa et cela change des vinyles de la série "Off The Soundbouard" avec leur pochette bien nulle et leur tarif prohibitif...
En parallèle, j'ai effectivement trois versions différentes de ce concert diffusé à la radio.

In my quest to get as many Kiss Bootleg’s I can, I found this one in a local record store, new and sealed. And cheap. This is actually an easy one to get if you are collecting Kiss Bootlegs. I think I paid $25 for it. There is nothing really special about this one, no inserts, no picture sleeves and no surprised in the package like I have received in a lot of my bootlegs. This one is rather generic. For historical reasons though, it is pretty cool. The recording is an FM Broadcast from April 18, 1974 in Memphis, TN at the Lafayette Music Room and is one of the earliest recordings of the band.

Soundwise…well…let’s just say there is sound. This is a recording off a radio broadcast on to a tape. That tape was then copied, which was then copied, which was then copied, which was then copied and keep going for another dozen copies. There is a massive tape drag at several points during the show which slows the song down and it is quite noticeable. That proves that the source material was from an old tape that had been copied many times. Yes, the sound sucks at times and might be on the low end of some of my bootlegs, but I am still okay with it and because I collect them I will buy regardless.

If you look at the setlist, you will notice a few things stand out. One is they basically played the entire debut album with a few minor exceptions. Two, they play the song “She” which won’t come out until 2 albums later on ‘Dressed to Kill’. And Three, they play a song called “Acrobat” which is actually the basis for the song “Love Theme From Kiss” from the first album. This is two months after the debut album release, so it is strange they played the “Acrobat” version and not the album version.

SIDE 1:

The album and set opens with “Deuce” and boy can you hear the tape drag on this one, pretty drastic. But you can still make out the song and hear Gene just fine as it is in the instruments where you have the issues. Nothing is real clear except the vocals. Towards the end of the song, it clears up and gets a little louder and that cowbell comes in nicely. “Strutter” is up next after a slight pause and you get more wobbly instruments and even a little on the vocals this time around. Paul sounds like he is singing the song so much slower. Again, you are buying this strictly for the historical value…that is what I keep telling myself anyway.

“Firehouse” sounds great and I happy with that version. It is an untouched, live version warts and all and it is quite enjoyable. Ace’s solo sounds good and you get a glimpse of the band doing what they do best with no real hiccups. The cool song on here is “She” as I said it hadn’t even been released yet on an album. The guitar opening on it sounds a little slower and I am guessing that is the tape drag as there is a lot of wobble. But vocally again, sounds good. Gene is menacing as ever and Paul on background duties. The coolest part is the instrumental break/guitar solo as it isn’t what we get later. This the reason to buy this release if you need one. And last up for Side 1 is the badass song “Nothin’ to Lose”. And by this time you are used to the wobble and so it starts sounding pretty decent (okay, decent enough). I love this song as you get both Gene and Peter on vocals (and Paul is heard pretty good on backing vocals). I love Peter’s gritty and raspy old school singing on this one. Always fun.

SIDE 2:

Side 2 kicks off with the Ace Frehley penned song “Cold Gin” (after the radio DJ does a station break), but with Gene on vocals as Ace wasn’t singing this early on in the band. Now, I did get to see Ace do this one this past Summer when he opened for Alice Cooper but that is another story. I really love this song but I will say this version seemed a little flat and not sure if that was the band or the recording itself. After a little tuning, we get Gene’s bass and some thumps until they become “100,000 Years”. Paul sounds fresh and youthful and can do some great ooh-yeahs back then.

Another favorite of mine to hear live is “Black Diamond” even with a DJ interrupting the opening notes for a station break. The tape is wobbly again as it sounds a little funky and messed up, but it is still “Black Diamond”. I love the slow opening and then the bombastic explosion for the rest of the song. Plus, the instrumental break and solo are always great. An all around fantastic song every time I hear it. The song ends the broadcast. Then the show announcer comes back and the band is tuning their instruments a little they go in to what is labeled as “Acrobat” but it cuts out the “Love Theme From Kiss” parts off and is just the band jamming. Peter has a little drum solo piece then the band kicks in and they jam out, all instrumentally and then they start singing only a little. There are very few lyrics and they sing “You’re much too young” a couple times and then they go back to jamming and we get a killer guitar solo piece as well. Then Paul says “Good Night” and it is all over. Fun track.

Despite the tape drag and the wobbly sound in out at times throughout, I still find this an enjoyable most especially for an early version of “She” and for the encore with “Acrobat”. It is also a cool historical piece to have anything live and uncut from 1974 with them really just getting going. All-in-all, it turned out to be an okay show as you get used to the sound issues and you enjoy it for what it is. I can’t give it too high of a score, but I will give it at least a 2.5 out of 5.0 Stars (but it should get more for the two songs I mentioned – maybe a 3.0 to 3.5…but that might be too generous).

We are up to the fifth album in the Bootleg series and we are still on the albums I found in Paris back in April.  And since it is July 4th, I thought what is more American than July 4th…well KISS!!!

This was was from September 14, 1974 on the Hotter Than Hell Tour and it was recorded at The Victory Burlesque in Toronto, ON, Canada.  This was actually a warm-up show for the tour, one of two nights (not sure which one).  This was also about a month before the Hotter Than Hell album came out.

As usual, before we get into the music we will talk about the packaging and what was offered with this set.  First off, this was a single LP and not a double like all the others as this was only a 9 song set as you have to remember this was only 1974 and Kiss hadn’t been around very long with only 2 album to choose from at this point.  The packaging was quite simple.  The front (as seen above) is a very early shot of the band before all the glitz and glamour.  The back is a great shot of the band on stage (what show, I do not know for sure…we will assume this one, but I am sure it is not).


The vinyl sleeve is a nice solid cardboard sleeve that is very sturdy and has more great pictures.



The set also came with a Tour Poster with all the tour dates on it which when folded out was a decent size.  It was nice to get a little something extra for the money.


And the last thing is the vinyl.  The album back cover says it is a limited edition on black, purple, white and grey marble vinyl.  I don’t think it is all those, I think it is one of those and mine was white.  I don’t see any other colors, but WHITE!! It is still pretty though.

Now on to the music.  The set list is only 8 songs, but they are a great 9 songs and since it was so early  in their career, it does not end with “Rock & Roll All Nite”…thank my lucky stars!!!

The sound is interesting to say the least.  It isn’t the greatest sounding record I have, but you can understand what they are singing and hear the different instruments, sometimes it is rather muffled, distorted and a little rough around the edges.  Not the band’s playing as it is sensational, only the sound.  It is an audience recording, but that is okay because think about the history here.  This is a show from their pretty early days and that is cool for me.


The announcer comes on and doesn’t say…”You wanted the best…” as this was prior to the band opening their shows with that intro.  Instead it was “Put your two lips together and welcome Kiss!!”.  Then the show opens with “Deuce” and the band sounds fantastic.  Ace’s guitar playing is incredible and Gene’s scream is perfect. “Strutter” is up next and it is pretty rough sounding as there is so much distortion noise that is at times distracting.  This might be the roughest song which sucks as it is one of my favorite songs by the band.

Paul actually speaks briefly to introduce the song which he doesn’t do much during the show.  Very minimal Paul banter. “Nothing to Lose” is brutal, but in a good way.  The band sounds tight, Gene and Peter are killing it on vocals (Peter more so then Gene) and it is everything you want from Kiss.

The fans get involved and clapping before the band kicks in on “Firehouse”.  You get the menacing bass riff from Gene and some stellar vocals for Paul.  And of course, the siren is a blaring towards the end which the recording picks up quite well.

Side 1 ends with an interesting song. The song “She” is played and this won’t be released on an album until their third ‘Dressed to Kill’ and remember we are still a month away from their second album coming out.  This is such a killer song and it sounds amazing including Gene’s bass and then Ace’s solo…despite the shoddy sound recording.


Side 2 kicks off with “Parasite”, the first of two new songs from the “Hotter Than Hell” album.  It kicks off with that deadly little riff and off you go with Gene on vocals.  This one sounds awesome as well and I have started to forget about the roughness of the recording.  Everything about the band here is clicking even Peter’s drumming and Ace is a beast at this point.

“100,000 Years” is next and Paul on vocals for this one and let me tell you there is no lip-syncing or added tracks here (that will come much later in the career), it is all Paul.  Paul does some banter during the middle of the song with Peter popping out some drum fills. Listening to this old recording was “nice to reacquainted with their style”.

And then we get in to “Black Diamond” with Paul’s little intro and then BAM! into the meat of the song. Peter sounds a little iffy at times, but he is giving it his all.  Some of the “iffy” part is probably just the recording itself.  Don’t get me wrong, the band is doing their thing and doing it well. Peter is screaming his lungs out which might be my problem as he is over doing it.  I think it was so freaking loud at the show that the sound got a little muffled at times.

The final song was the other song from ‘Hotter Than Hell’, “Let Me Go, Rock ‘N’ Roll”.  The crowd does a lot of hand clapping per the band’s request which lasts a lot longer than it really should.  The band races through the song with Gene on vocals.  A couple minutes in to the song, there is still hand clapping…how the hell can they go that long!!  It is a fun, high energy song and a good way to close the show.

The overall sound isn’t that great, but the performance is so good you tend to forget about it.  If I was rating on sound alone, this would maybe get a 2.0, but the fact Kiss is playing so well and it is such an early show and songs are played that haven’t been released yet, I will up the score to a 3.0 out 5.0 Stars.  As a part of Kisstory, this is a great release and do grab if you come across.  It is not the best one I picked up, but I still love it a lot.

Nous en sommes au cinquième album de la série Bootleg et nous en sommes toujours aux albums que j'ai trouvés à Paris en avril dernier. Et puisque c'est le 4 juillet, je me suis dit qu'est-ce qui est plus américain que le 4 juillet…eh bien KISS!!!

C'était à partir du 14 septembre 1974 sur la tournée Hotter Than Hell et il a été enregistré au Victory Burlesque à Toronto, ON, Canada. C'était en fait un spectacle d'échauffement pour la tournée, l'une des deux nuits (je ne sais pas laquelle). C'était aussi environ un mois avant la sortie de l'album Hotter Than Hell.

Comme d'habitude, avant d'entrer dans la musique, nous parlerons du packaging et de ce qui était offert avec cet ensemble. Tout d'abord, il s'agissait d'un single LP et non d'un double comme tous les autres car il ne s'agissait que d'un ensemble de 9 chansons car il ne faut pas oublier que ce n'était qu'en 1974 et que Kiss n'existait pas depuis très longtemps avec seulement 2 albums au choix à ce point. L'emballage était assez simple. Le devant (comme on le voit ci-dessus) est un très premier cliché du groupe avant tout le faste et le glamour. Le dos est une superbe photo du groupe sur scène (quel spectacle, je ne sais pas avec certitude… nous supposerons celui-ci, mais je suis sûr que ce n'est pas le cas).

La pochette en vinyle est une belle pochette en carton solide qui est très robuste et qui contient plus de superbes images.

L'ensemble était également accompagné d'une affiche de la tournée avec toutes les dates de la tournée qui, une fois dépliée, avait une taille décente. C'était agréable d'avoir un petit quelque chose en plus pour l'argent.

Et la dernière chose est le vinyle. La couverture arrière de l'album indique qu'il s'agit d'une édition limitée sur vinyle marbré noir, violet, blanc et gris. Je ne pense pas que ce soit tous ceux-là, je pense que c'en est un et le mien était blanc. Je ne vois pas d'autres couleurs, mais BLANC !! C'est quand même joli.

Passons maintenant à la musique. La setlist ne compte que 8 chansons, mais ce sont 9 bonnes chansons et comme c'était si tôt dans leur carrière, cela ne se termine pas avec "Rock & Roll All Nite"…merci ma bonne étoile !!!

Le son est pour le moins intéressant. Ce n'est pas le meilleur disque que j'ai, mais vous pouvez comprendre ce qu'ils chantent et entendre les différents instruments, parfois c'est plutôt étouffé, déformé et un peu rugueux sur les bords. Ce n'est pas le groupe qui joue car c'est sensationnel, seulement le son. C'est un enregistrement d'audience, mais ce n'est pas grave car pensez à l'histoire ici. C'est un spectacle de leurs premiers jours et c'est cool pour moi.

L'annonceur arrive et ne dit pas… "Vous vouliez le meilleur…" car c'était avant que le groupe n'ouvre ses concerts avec cette intro. Au lieu de cela, c'était "Mettez vos deux lèvres ensemble et accueillez Kiss !!". Ensuite, le spectacle s'ouvre avec "Deuce" et le groupe a un son fantastique. Le jeu de guitare d'Ace est incroyable et le cri de Gene est parfait. "Strutter" est le prochain et il sonne assez grossièrement car il y a tellement de bruit de distorsion qui est parfois gênant. C'est peut-être la chanson la plus dure qui soit, car c'est l'une de mes chansons préférées du groupe.

Paul parle en fait brièvement pour présenter la chanson qu'il ne fait pas beaucoup pendant le spectacle. Les plaisanteries très minimes de Paul. "Rien à perdre" est brutal, mais dans le bon sens. Le groupe sonne serré, Gene et Peter le tuent au chant (Peter plus que Gene) et c'est tout ce que vous attendez de Kiss.

Les fans s'impliquent et applaudissent avant que le groupe ne se lance sur "Firehouse". Vous obtenez le riff de basse menaçant de Gene et des voix stellaires pour Paul. Et bien sûr, la sirène est un hurlement vers la fin que l'enregistrement capte assez bien.

La face 1 se termine par une chanson intéressante. La chanson "She" est jouée et elle ne sortira pas sur un album avant leur troisième "Dressed to Kill" et rappelez-vous que nous sommes encore à un mois de la sortie de leur deuxième album. C'est une chanson tellement meurtrière et ça sonne incroyable, y compris la basse de Gene, puis le solo d'Ace… malgré l'enregistrement sonore de mauvaise qualité.

La face 2 démarre avec "Parasite", la première des deux nouvelles chansons de l'album "Hotter Than Hell". Ça démarre avec ce petit riff mortel et c'est parti avec Gene au chant. Celui-ci sonne aussi très bien et j'ai commencé à oublier la rudesse de l'enregistrement. Tout dans le groupe ici clique même sur la batterie de Peter et Ace est une bête à ce stade.

"100 000 ans" est le suivant et Paul au chant pour celui-ci et laissez-moi vous dire qu'il n'y a pas de synchronisation labiale ou de pistes ajoutées ici (cela viendra beaucoup plus tard dans la carrière), c'est tout Paul. Paul fait quelques plaisanteries au milieu de la chanson avec Peter qui fait des remplissages de batterie. L'écoute de cet ancien enregistrement était "agréable pour renouer avec leur style".

Et puis nous entrons dans "Black Diamond" avec la petite intro de Paul, puis BAM ! dans la viande de la chanson. Peter semble parfois un peu incertain, mais il donne tout. Une partie de la partie "incertaine" n'est probablement que l'enregistrement lui-même. Ne vous méprenez pas, le groupe fait son truc et le fait bien. Peter crie à pleins poumons, ce qui pourrait être mon problème car il en a trop fait. Je pense que c'était tellement bruyant au spectacle que le son était parfois un peu étouffé.

La dernière chanson était l'autre chanson de "Hotter Than Hell", "Let Me Go, Rock 'N' Roll". La foule fait beaucoup d'applaudissements à la demande du groupe, ce qui dure beaucoup plus longtemps que prévu. Le groupe parcourt la chanson avec Gene au chant. Quelques minutes après le début de la chanson, il y a encore des applaudissements… comment diable peuvent-ils durer aussi longtemps !! C'est une chanson amusante et énergique et une bonne façon de clore le spectacle.

Le son global n'est pas si bon, mais les performances sont si bonnes que vous avez tendance à l'oublier. Si j'évaluais uniquement le son, cela obtiendrait peut-être un 2.0, mais le fait que Kiss joue si bien et que c'est un spectacle si précoce et que des chansons soient jouées qui n'ont pas encore été publiées, je vais augmenter le score à un 3.0 sur 5,0 étoiles. Dans le cadre de Kisstory, c'est une excellente version et à saisir si vous rencontrez. Ce n'est pas le meilleur que j'ai choisi, mais je l'aime toujours beaucoup.
