So I’m in New York City for a speaking gig at a marketing conference called ClickZ Live, and Ace Frehley is playing down the street at B.B. King in Times Square. Having just witnessed the epic David Gilmour show the night before, I think what the hell, I’ve got to keep the rock ‘n’ roll momentum alive. What better way to do that then to see one of the greatest guitar players of all time?

I’ve been a KISS fan since I was a kid, 27 years a card-carrying member of the KISS Army. Growing up I actually thought that these guys had superpowers. Any why wouldn’t I? No one had ever seen KISS without their makeup in the ’70s, something that will never happen again in this real-time media world where virtually every person on the planet has a media studio in their back pocket. In the case of KISS though, they had the songs and the musical chops to not only sustain that mystique, but to take it to another level—and Ace was my favorite member.


It’s the second night of two gigs at B.B. King and the place is pretty jam-packed. The guy in front of me is wearing a GnR shirt from the shows last weekend in Vegas—he’s from Spain and went to both, and now he’s front row for Ace. That’s a fucking rock ‘n’ roll trooper for ya. He tells me there is a rumor that Paul Stanley is going to make an appearance, something that turned out to be just that, a rumor.

I’m there pretty early because Steve Conte (New York Dolls, Company of Wolves) is opening. I’ve never seen this guy before solo. Conte takes the stage as the leader of a trio and starts to tear through a set of garage rock anthems that sounded something like Springsteen crossed with The Replacements, with just a touch of the New York Dolls in the form of a ’70s pop punk guitar driven explosion. It was the absolute perfect way to open the show up and I dug it so much that I ran over to say hello and pick up his latest CD.

By the way I asked him if he watches the show Vinyl as I’m a huge fan of the series. He says, “Yeah, I watch it, but it’s just entertainment, none of that shit really happened.” We chatted a bit more about the show and other rock ‘n’ roll topics. He’s a really cool dude for the record.


Next up it was time for Ace to hit the stage. I had no idea he had quite the all-star band touring with him. Richie Scarlet (The emperor of Rock ‘n’ Roll) on guitar, Chris Wyse (Ozzy, The Cult), and drummer Scot Coogan (Brides of Destruction, Lita Ford). Ace wastes no time getting down to business as the band tears into “Rip it Out” the opening cut on his classic solo album from 1978 (which by the way is the highest charting album of all the KISS solo records).


Ace and company keep the jams roaring with “Toys” from 2014’s Space Invader. The rest of the setlist was pretty much a 50/50 split of solo material and KISS classics. There was something for everyone here from “Rock Soldiers” to “Love Gun” to “Deuce,” “Parasite,” you get the idea. I think the show could have easily gone on for another hour as the crowd was absolutely losing their shit the entire time. New York City loves their Space Man, and he shared the love back with one hell of a live show.

Ace Frehley’s new album Origins Vol. 1 hits stores today (4/15) and features 12 classic rock jams in true Ace Frehley style. Not to mention, the first song recorded with Paul Stanley in 18 years—Jesus, I’m getting old—a fantastic cover of Free’s “Fire and Water.”


Bottom line: Ace is the fucking man and his band absolutely slays it live. I would go see this show every single night for a month if it was possible. Every fan of rock n roll needs to see this guy live at least once in their life.

Bien que dans le cas de Kiss, ils n'avaient pas seulement ce mysticisme mais ils avaient les chansons et la maîtrise musicale pour être à un autre niveau et Ace était mon membre préféré.

... (je passe un peu)... Un gars m'a dit qu'il y avait une rumeur disant que Paul Stanley allait faire une apparition... une rumeur.

Je suis arrivée là de bonne heure car Steve Conte (New York Dolls, ...) est en première partie. Avant, je n'avais jamais vu ce gars en solo. Pour ce concert, il est le leader d'un trio et à commencer à déchirer avec un set d'hymne de garage band qui sonne comme un croisement de Sprinsteen et de The Replacement, avec juste une touche de New York Dolls dans la forme de l'explosion de guitares pop punk des années 70. C'était vraiment la meilleure manière d'ouvrir ce show et je vais creuser et récupérer rapidement son dernier CD.

Puis c'est au tour d'Ace d'attaquer son show. Je n'avais pas idée qu'il était accompagné par une telle bande de stars durant sa tournée. Richie Scarlet (L'empereur du Rock ‘n’ Roll) à la guitare, Chris Wyse (Ozzy, The Cult), et le batteur Scot Coogan (Brides of Destruction, Lita Ford). Ace ne perd pas de temps et la bande attaque avec “Rip it Out” le titre d'ouverture de son fameux album solo de 1978 (qui avec le temps est devenu la meilleure vente de tous les albums solo de KISS).

Ace et compagnie garde le rythme fugueux avec “Toys” de Space Invader en 2014. Le reste de la set liste se partage entre 50/50 de compositions en solo et  de classiques de Kiss. Ici, il y avait quelque chose pour chacun de “Rock Soldiers” à “Love Gun” à “Deuce,” “Parasite,” pour avoir une idée. Je pense que le show aurait pu facilement continuer une heure de plus que la foule aurait totalement oublié sa m.... pendant tout ce temps. La ville de New York City aime ses Space Man, et il partage avec un show live d'enfer.

Le nouvel album d'Ace Frehley "Origins Vol. 1" sort en magasin aujourd'hui (4/15) et y figure 12 titres de rock classique dans le pur style d'Ace Frehley. Sans parler de la première chanson enregistrée avec Paul Stanley depuis 18 ans —Jesus, je deviens vieux— Une fantastique reprise du titre de Free “Fire and Water.”

Dernière ligne : Ace est un "fucking man" et sa bande est une tuerie en live. Si j'étais seul et que cela était possible, j'irais voir ce show tous les soirs pendant un mois. Tous les fans de Rock'n'roll doivent avoir vu ce gars en live au moins une fois dans leur vie."

Original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley was admitted to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania following his show last night (Friday, April 15) at the F.M. Kirby Center in the city. After extensive testing, it was determined that Ace's symptoms were due to exhaustion and dehydration.

In consultation with his doctors, Ace, who aside from the exhaustion and dehydration has been given a clean bill of health, has reluctantly agreed to cancel tonight's sold-out show at the Chance in Poughkeepsie, New York. The venue is working to reschedule the date in late September and expects to announce an exact date later this week.

In the meantime, ticket buyers for tonight's show can use their tickets for the rescheduled date in September or return them at the point of purchase for a full refund. AceFrehley.com VIP Experience and Guitar Signature packages purchasers will be contacted by AceFrehley.com and can either obtain a full refund or use their packages on the rescheduled date.

Once released from the hospital, Ace will be heading home to Southern California to recuperate.

Ace has just released "Origins Vol. 1", a collection of twelve newly recorded classics from his formative years featuring some of the biggest names in rock and roll. Most notably, KISS frontman Paul Stanley joins Ace on FREE's hit "Fire And Water". This collaboration marks the first time that Ace and Paul appear on the same studio recording since KISS's 1998 reunion album "Psycho Circus".

We just got word from Ace Frehley's publicist that the legendary KISS guitarist was admitted to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital after performing last night.

The 64-year-old Frehley was diagnosed with exhaustion and dehydration. Thankfully, doctors determined he will make a full recovery. He just needs to rest. Here's the official statement:

L’ancien membre du groupe KISS, Ace Frehley a dû être contraint d’annuler son spectacle ce samedi à New York. Souffrant d’épuisement et de déshydratation, ce dernier a été hospitalisé dans un hôpital de Pennsylvanie après le concert qu’il donnait vendredi soir.

Selon le site américain TMZ qui révèle l’information, le guitariste est très fatigué. Il ne devrait donc pas reprendre tout de suite le chemin des concerts. Pour le moment on ignore combien de temps Ace va rester hospitalisé. Toutefois sur son site officiel, on apprend que celui-ci devrait retourner à Los Angeles pour se reposer un peu.

A noter que le guitariste avait échappé à la mort deux fois dans sa vie. La première fois, en 1976 ce dernier s’était électrisé avec sa guitare électrique et alors qu’il était entre la vie et la mort, celui-ci avait pu être sauvé au bout de dix minutes.
La seconde fois, le musicien avait été victime d’un terrible accident de la route alors que ce dernier était en train de rouler à contresens sur une autoroute et sous l’emprise de l’alcool.

Just days after Kiss' Paul Stanley and the band's former member Ace Frehley released their first collaboration in 18 years, both guitarists coincidentally had to skip concerts due to unforeseen medical issues: On Friday, Kiss performed as a trio for only the second time after Stanley tore his bicep tendon, and now Frehley's show Saturday in Poughkeepsie. New York was postponed after the guitarist was hospitalized with exhaustion and dehydration.

"Ace Frehley was admitted to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital following his show last night at the F.M. Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA," Frehley's Facebook page alerted fans Saturday. "After extensive testing, it was determined that Ace’s symptoms were due to exhaustion and dehydration. In consultation with his doctors, Ace, who aside from the exhaustion and dehydration has been given a clean bill of health, has reluctantly agreed to cancel tonight’s sold out show at the Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY."

Frehley's April 9th concert in New Hope, Pennsylvania was also cancelled as a member of his band dealt with flu-like symptoms. Unlike the New Hope show, the Poughkeepsie venue is working to reschedule Frehley's concert for September.

"Once released from the hospital, Ace will be heading home to Southern California to recuperate. We wish him a speedy recovery," Frehley's Facebook post added. There are presently no other dates on the guitarist's touring itinerary.

Frehley released his new album Origins: Vol. 1 on Friday. The covers album finds Frehley and Stanley tackling Free's "Fire and Water," the former bandmates' first song together since Kiss' 1998 one-off reunion album Psycho Circus. "We are linked together forever," Stanley told Rolling Stone of the collaboration. "We created something that will live far past our lifetimes. And I would love to see him succeed."

Stanley added, "I have no anger [toward Frehley]. I'm sitting in an amazingly beautiful house with an incredible family, an amazing wife, an amazing life, and it's all built on Kiss. And the foundation of Kiss is something Ace is a part of. We couldn't have built this without him. He's part of it."

The twice (and future?) Kiss guitarist has put his otherworldly spin on classic rock anthems he grew up on, including legendary tracks from Cream (White Room), Steppenwolf (Magic Carpet Ride), the Rolling Stones (Street Fighting Man) and Jimi Hendrix (Spanish Castle Magic).

The idea was just to let Ace rip on songs he’s loved since he was a little alien on Planet Jendell. But the result might just indicate he’s ready for a third incarnation as The Spaceman in whatever time Kiss has left. With 2014’s Space Invader, Frehley showed he can still write quirky, compelling rock songs, and this album shows his playing chops and classic rock sensibilities remain in fine form.

He out-guitars Jimmy Page on Led Zeppelin’s Bring it On Home, which is no small feat. He trades licks with Slash on Thin Lizzy’s Emerald, and exchanges vocals and guitars with Lita Ford on the Troggs’ Wild Thing (which still doesn’t sound the same without Sam Kinison screaming it).

Frehley redoes three classic Kiss songs with extended solos, including two of his greatest, Parasite and Cold Gin, along with Rock And Roll Hell from 1982’s Creatures of the Night, which his initial replacement Vinnie Vincent played on.

And if Kiss conspiracy theorists need any more to fuel to rumour mill, Frehley teams up with Kiss lead singer Paul Stanley on a cover of Free’s Fire And Water, marking their first collaboration since 1998’s Psycho Circus.

Stanley and Gene Simmons need to sit down, listen to this album closely, and consider the possibilities. Put him in, coach; he’s ready to play.

Fifteen years ago this week, Ace 'Spaceman' Frehley played his last gig as a member of Kiss.

Now, after years of public bad blood, he released a covers album that features his first song in nearly two decades with his old bandmate Paul Stanley. "Fire and Water" originally recorded by Free, appears on Origins Vol. 1 released April 15.


Talking about his friendship with Paul Stanley, Frehley said to Rolling Stone last February "We've always been friends...The press seems to amplify negativity. I guess it makes good copy."

"People look through the windows and the see mouths move, but they don't hear what's being said," Stanley says. "I was happy Ace called me up with this. It's very funny, because on my phone when he called, his name comes up, and it put a smile on my face. Like, I pick up the phone and go, 'Ace Frehley!'"

Stanley also underscores that all is copacetic between Frehley and him. "I have no anger," he says. "I'm sitting in an amazingly beautiful house with an incredible family, an amazing wife, and it's all built on Kiss. And the foundation of Kiss is something Ace is a part of. We couldn't have built this without him. He's part of it."

Free's third album, 1970's Fire and Water made a significant impact on the former Kiss guitarist early in his life, and he has wanted to record his own take on its title track since the Seventies. He recorded the backing tracks with his band and then sent it to Stanley with hopes he'd be interested in singing it.

Stanley, too, thought it was a great song choice. "[Free vocalist] Paul Rodgers, besides being a friend, is one of the greatest singers of the last couple of generations," he says. "He has always been an inspiration, and so I didn't take singing that song lightly. You don't often get a chance to redo a Free song, and when you're singing something by somebody who you respect immensely, it's like me sending it to him."

Kiss fans have had a rough week or so.

Ace Frehley, known for his time with the band, is on his way home after being admitted to and then released from a Pennsylvania hospital this weekend.

Frehley, 64, canceled a Saturday show in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., when he was admitted to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital in Pennsylvania after his show Friday night there, according to a message posted Saturday on his official Facebook page.

The message said, "After extensive testing, it was determined that Ace’s symptoms were due to exhaustion and dehydration."

It added, "In consultation with his doctors, Ace, who aside from the exhaustion and dehydration has been given a clean bill of health, has reluctantly agreed to cancel tonight’s sold-out show at the Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY. The venue is working to reschedule the date in late September and expects to announce an exact date later this week."

However, by Sunday afternoon, there was welcome news: Frehley was released from the hospital and was on his way home to Southern California. In a new Facebook message, he thanked his doctors and nurses at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.


In that post, he even took time to give a shout-out to Kiss star Paul Stanley, who had to cancel joining the band Friday because he was recovering from surgery to repair a torn bicep tendon.


Stanley, 64, posted late Friday that he "will be great and ready to rock."

Ace Frehley Origins Vol.1

Since he first hit the charts with Russ Ballard’s “Back in the New York Groove” in 1978, Ace Frehley’s been marked as a man who loves covers. Despite being a competent writer and surrounding himself with others who were more than capable, there a remains a perception that if Ace could only line up with the perfect remake, he’d be riding the charts from now until hell won’t have it. In truth? That strategy hasn’t always worked.

In 1989 he took a stab at “Do Ya”, originally recorded by the Move, then remade by ELO. The Bronx native’s rendition had its charms but there are hardcore fans who shake, froth, and recoil at the mere mention of that ill-fated single. That’s minor compared to the furor over his 2014 rendition of Steve Miller’s “The Joker”. After it appeared, online message boards and podcast tables were aflame with hatred. “Stop wasting Ace on stupid covers,” the fans would say. But, of course, Frehley’s handlers weren’t listening.

Nor should they. The former KISS guitarist is a wild card. Planning what will and won’t work for Ace Frehley is like a crossing guard directing radioactive atoms. The only thing we can rely on him to do is turn up and wail on his guitar with abandon like a starry-eyed kid who grew during the British Invasion. That’s mostly what he does on this new 12-track collection loaded with songs originally recorded by Thing Lizzy, the Kinks and those Rolling Stones. There are others too. He takes on Steppenwolf, Free, and even himself. In a way. He’s joined by a cast of players that includes John 5, Paul Stanley and Slash. The results? Exactly what you’ve come to expect from an Ace Frehley record.

The choice of material reveals how deeply immersed in the mainstream (and counterculture) a young Paul Frehley was. Many of the pieces here are songs that populate drive time classic rock shows any old afternoon. Some of them probably didn’t need a new airing, least of all by this spaceman. You can hear “White Room” butchered at the local blues jam every Tuesday. Your dad’s rockin’ combo probably wheels out “Magic Carpet Ride” at least once a set during gigs at the corner bowling alley.

Yet they work here and probably better than they have a right to. Frehley and drummer Scot Coogan trade vocals on the former, making for an especially seamless rendition of the Cream chestnut. Frehley, who covered the Stones’ “2000 Man” on KISS’s Dynasty, handles “Street Fighting Man” remarkably well, probably because it comes as much from his experience as from the collective Jagger/Richards imagination. It’s no surprise that his “Spanish Castle Magic” wins because Frehley and Hendrix are both cats who embraced the possibilities of a magical world existing parallel to this one. Who else could convince you that a shared destination is just a hop, skip and jump by dragonfly?

Ace has never been a singer’s singer, but his voice has an undeniable charm for those willing to deal with its imperfections. Those quirks and cracks are on display throughout and most of the time they work in his favor. Not always. His take on Thin Lizzy’s “Emerald” isn’t a good match in either the musical or vocal department. He and guest artist Slash lack the passion and finesse of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson on the original. The same might be said for Coogan’s drumming which seems to fight too hard for our attention. The solos traded are a clanging clatter that’s almost unlistenable. As much as the star’s imagination works for him during “Spanish Castle” it all but abandons him here. He seems incapable of relating a story that Phil Lynott felt on a very personal level.

Quick redemption comes in the form of Led Zep’s “Bring It on Home”. Sure, Coogan handles the Robert Plant parts, but Ace sounds very much the aspiring bluesman during the intro. He also has the same music embedded in his DNA as Jimmy Page and thus his lead lines are as good as anything heard on the original. That redemption is short-lived however. Lita Ford can sing well but her abilities are no match for material that’s beneath her talents or those of her partners on “Wild Thing”. It’s been done to death and beyond and its appearance here is about as unwelcome as the Grim Reaper himself.

What works best, better than the rest (at least most of the time), is when our star reconnects with his past. His old chum Paul Stanley turns up for Free’s “Fire and Water” and although a full-on KISS reunion seems out of the question, one wonders who an Ace and Paul duo record might go down. Stanley knows what makes the original tick. He seizes upon that, expands it but does so with an appropriate balance of chutzpah and respect. “Parasite”, the second of two pairings with John 5 sounds as good as it ever did in the hands of KISS, maybe better.

Some will bemoan the inclusion of “Cold Gin”. The definitive version no doubt appeared 40 years ago on Alive! and so this feels like it’s trying too hard to recapture that magic, whether Ace sounds comfortable with it or not. McCready’s lead playing neither adds nor subtracts from this version. It’s just flat and forgettable. But “Rock and Roll Hell”, a song that appeared on 1982’s Creatures of the Night, a record that bore Frehley’s likeness but little if any of his playing, serves as a perfect closer and answers questions about what Creatures might have sounded like with our favorite alien fully present.

It also confirms something we’ve known all along: Hearing Ace Frehley play lead guitar remains one of the great pleasures in rock ‘n’ roll and his solos are almost spot-on throughout this collection. That alone stands as reason enough to buy the ticket and take the ride.

Origins Vol.1 isn’t perfect but if you’re an Ace fan you know you wouldn’t have it any other way.
