Ace Frehley Explains Why His ‘Origins’ LP Includes a Cover of a Kiss Song He Never Played On By Jeff Giles April 15, 2016 9:28 AM
Ace Frehley fans who find it odd that his new Origins Vol. 1 album includes a cover of “Rock and Roll Hell” — a Kiss song he didn’t originally play on — have Frehley’s label rep Ken Gulick to thank.
Frehley and Gulick described the process by which “Rock and Roll Hell” ended up on the record during a visit to Eddie Trunk’s show, explaining that thanks to Gulick, Frehley ended up listening to the 1982 Kiss record Creatures of the Night start-to-finish for possibly the first time ever.
“I just wanted to make sure we ended up with some unpredictable songs on the record,” said Gulick. “So I burned a CDR of 10 songs that I thought he should consider, and we drove around listening to them.”
That CD, according to Gulick, contained two Rush songs, two Cheap Trick songs, two Who songs — and two songs from Creatures of the Night, which was tracked while Frehley was making his exit from the group. As Gulick explained, he’d gotten the impression from some recent interviews that Frehley might feel like he had some unfinished business with the record.
“There’s one or two interviews where he talked about … not playing on it, and I thought, ‘You know what, Ace? Your face is on this thing. You helped it go gold and platinum. Why don’t you listen to it?'” recalled Gulick. “So we played ‘Rock and Roll Hell’ in the car and ‘I Still Love You,’ and he fell in love with ‘Rock and Roll Hell.’ There was no talking him out of it — they tracked it within 24 hours.”
“From beginning to end? Never. Never,” said Frehley when asked whether he’d ever listened to Creatures. “I was exiting the group when that whole thing went down. I was already out the door.”
Admitting he doesn’t remember whether he even played on the record, Frehley shrugged, “I’ve listened to that record, but not beginning to end. I’d listen to a couple of tracks and put it down. I don’t remember listening to ‘Rock and Roll Hell’ for a very long time, but when I heard it, I fell in love with it. I thought it was a great song, and I thought I could do a good version of it.”
Frehley’s “Rock and Roll Hell” marks the second time he’s covered a cut from a Kiss LP he wasn’t involved with. In 1989, he recorded a version of “Hide Your Heart,” a song co-written by Kiss co-founder Paul Stanley with professional songwriter Holly Knight, unaware that it was tabbed as the first single from the band’s Hot in the Shade LP.
“I had no idea they were tracking it, they had no idea I was tracking it,” he later said. “After I had recorded it and spent thousands of dollars on the production, [Gene Simmons] called up and said ‘Could you please take that off your record, because we’re putting that out as our first single.’ I said no way.”

ACE FREHLEY Debuts "Fire And Water" Cover Track With PAUL STANLEY
By Larry Petro, News Monkey Thursday, April 14, 2016 @ 1:14 PM
First Recording With Ace And Paul In 18 Years
ACE FREHLEY has debuted a final song today from his forthcoming covers LP which is due out April 15th. "Fire And Water", the first recording of Frehley and KISS frontman Paul Stanley in nearly two decades, can be streamed below.
ACE FREHLEY will release Origins Vol. 1, a collection of 12 newly recorded classics from Ace’s formative years featuring some of the biggest names in rock and roll, tomorrow, April 15, 2016. This collaboration marks the first time that Ace and Paul appear on the same studio recording since KISS' 1998 reunion album Psycho Circus.
"White Room", which debuted a few weeks ago, is the classic hit originally performed by CREAM. Other guests are none other than Slash trading leads on THIN LIZZY's classic "Emerald" Lita Ford singing and playing lead on THE TROGGS' staple "Wild Thing", Rob Zombie guitarist John 5 playing guitar alongside Ace as he sings his classic KISS composition "Parasite" for the very first time, as well as Jimi Hendrix's "Spanish Castle Magic", and PEARL JAM's Mike McCready also plays guitar with Ace as he finally sings his KISS Alive! mainstay "Cold Gin". "White Room" is also an iTunes instant gratification track, meaning fans who pre order the LP on iTunes will receive the CREAM cover song instantly.
Origins Vol. 1 is the follow up to Space Invader, released in 2014. Space Invader was Frehley's first studio album in five years, and the LP debuted at #9 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart, scoring the highest charting position of any KISS solo album ever, and marked Frehley's first return to the Top 10 since KISS' aforementioned Psycho Circus in 1998.

KISS Legend Ace Frehley Learns He Didn’t Win a Grammy [Exclusive Video]
By Graham 'Gruhamed' Hartmann April 15, 2016 11:05 AM
KISS are one of the greatest rock bands in history, but somehow KISS has never won a Grammy. In fact, KISS has only received one Grammy nomination, but don’t tell that to Ace Frehley!
During the legendary guitarist’s most recent visit to our studio, we wanted to get his take on KISS only receiving a single Grammy nomination for Psycho Circus. Turns out all these years, Ace was under the impression KISS had won a Grammy for their 1977 classic ballad “Beth.” Mass confusion ensued, and after we confirmed that no Grammy was awarded to KISS for “Beth,” Ace dropped the classic line, “Wait a minute… I have a Grammy on my shelf.”
Ace Frehley has a random Grammy Award just chilling at his home? We needed to know what this award was, so Ace offered to call his his fiancée, Rachel Gordon, to confirm exactly what rested upon Ace’s trophy shelf.
We learned many things during this call, including Gordon’s pet name for Ace — Pooh Bear. Rachel was kind enough to check on Ace’s awards and was able to describe the trophy Ace had mistaken for a Grammy. To be fair, the award was given to KISS by the Recording Academy, so at least it was presented by the same organization. Rachel Gordon even sent us a photo of the massive award, so check it all out for yourselves in the clip above, which we’ve posted with Ace’s blessing.
What the hell is on Ace Frehley’s mantle? Find out exclusively right now in the funny video above! Ace Frehley’s new covers album, Origins Vol. 1, is available to purchase here.

Review: Ace Frehley still has what it takes on "Origins"

Ace Frehley "Origins Vol. 1" (Entertainment One)
The twice (and future?) Kiss guitarist has put his other-worldly spin on classic rock anthems he grew up on, including legendary tracks from Creem ("White Room;") Steppenwolf ("Magic Carpet Ride;") the Rolling Stones ("Street Fighting Man;") and Jimi Hendrix ("Spanish Castle Magic.")
The idea was just to let Ace rip on songs he's loved since he was a little alien on Planet Jendell. But the result might just indicate he's ready for a third incarnation as The Spaceman in whatever time Kiss has left. With 2014's "Space Invader," Frehley showed he can still write quirky, compelling rock songs, and this album shows his playing chops and classic rock sensibilities remain in fine form.
He out-guitars Jimmy Page on Led Zeppelin's "Bring it On Home," which is no small feat. He trades licks with Slash on Thin Lizzy's "Emerald," and exchanges vocals and guitars with Lita Ford on the Troggs' "Wild Thing" (which still doesn't sound the same without Sam Kinison screaming it).
Frehley re-does three classic Kiss songs with extended solos, including two of his greatest, "Parasite" and "Cold Gin," along with "Rock And Roll Hell" from 1982's "Creatures of the Night," which his initial replacement Vinnie Vincent played on.
And if Kiss conspiracy theorists need any more to fuel to rumour mill, Frehley teams up with Kiss lead singer Paul Stanley on a cover of Free's "Fire And Water," marking their first collaboration since 1998's "Psycho Circus."
Stanley and Gene Simmons need to sit down, listen to this album closely, and consider the possibilities. Put him in, coach; he's ready to play. Editors' Picks

Paul Stanley i Ace Frehley nagrali wspólnie utwór po 18 latach
Panowie połączyli siły i zarejestrowali numer na solowy krążek gitarzysty. Jak prezentuje się ten kompozycja?
foto: AFP/East News; Jack Shea/Starshots/Broadimage/East News
Muzyk zaprosił do współpracy wielu znanych gości m.in.

Ace Frehley Begins Writing Second Book
by Ken Tomczak , posted Apr 15 2016 7:00AM
Former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley has revelaed to the "Elliot In The Morning" radio program that he's begun writing his second book. Speaking with Elliot Segal, Frehely opened up about the planned sequel to his autobiography "No Regrets"
"Well, I've got a couple chapters written and I have several notes for other chapters that are gonna be included, so I'm thinking hopefully getting it finished by the end of the year and out next year. There wasn't much in the first book about the Frehley's Comet years, and there's plenty of stories along those lines, there's still plenty of KISS stories, and plenty of stories of me growing up. I probably have enough stories for five books," said Frehley.

Ace Frehley streams track with Paul Stanley
News / 18 hours ago / by Scott Munro
Hear Ace Frehley track Fire And Water featuring his Kiss man Paul Stanley
Ace Frehley has released a stream of his collaboration with Paul Stanley.
Former Kiss man Frehley released his covers album entitled Origins Vol. 1 today (April 15) and it features his take on Free’s Fire And Water which he recorded with Kiss mainman Stanley.
Frehley said of the track: “I thought Paul did a fabulous vocal on it. He jumped at the chance to do this because it's something that's outside of Kiss and his character in Kiss. It gave him a chance to sing.
“With Paul, you usually think of him singing in a slightly higher register and on Fire And Water, he's singing deep from his diaphragm, and it's a real cool vocal.”
Stanley previously reported he was more than happy to guest on the track – despite public spats between the pair down the years.
He said: “For all the bickering and stuff that we may say about each other, we go back to a very magical time. We started this together. So in spite of whatever we may say from time-to-time, or things that get blown up, we are a family – a dysfunctional one – but nonetheless a family.
“So Ace said, 'Would you do something on the album?' I said, 'Sure. Of course.’”
Frehley has been on tour across the US in support of the album, with his final two dates taking place tonight (April 15) at the FM Kirby Center in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, and tomorrow at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, New York.
