Et puis toutes ces versions anniversaires qui sortent régulièrement.
Cela devient très difficile à suivre !

Kiss founding member Ace Frehley was known for his wild and downright strange exploits during the band’s hedonistic heyday. One occasion Frehley even got weird by his own distorted standards was the bizarre moment he decided it would be a wise idea to down a whole bottle of perfume.
Frehley was always an eccentric character, a trait which can be traced all the way back to his abnormal childhood, one that saw him end up trapped in gang culture that led him into a way of living and treating like every day could be his last.

“I had guns put to my head. I got into some crazy fights,” the guitarist once said about his youth. “I got into some predicaments where I wasn’t sure I was gonna get out of them. But I was lucky. The worst thing that ever happened was when I was [slashed] in the stomach on my 13th birthday. Luckily, it wasn’t a deep wound,”

Following Kiss‘ spiralling success, one that saw them become a global phenomenon, the band was rarely off the road and their endless days were filled by abusing substances to cope with the boredom that came with the 23 hours in a day that they weren’t on stage. Nights quickly became weeks which then turned into months and before Frehley knew it he had lost years — that he can barely remember anything about today.

Frehley left the band in 2002 but when Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley talked to Rolling Stone in 2014 to reflect on 40 years of Kiss, they revealed that not a day goes by where they don’t discuss a crazy shenanigan that their former guitarist.

They explained that on one occasion Frehley needed a stiff drink, a period when they were stuck on a limo, and after one of his bandmates told him about the high alcohol percentage that is in perfume, without even a moment of contemplation, the guitarist then gulped the whole bottle in one go.

Frehley, who has now been sober since 2006, has talked at length about his addiction issues from his days with Kiss and how the music industry enables this kind of behaviour. “Musicians resort to drugs and alcohol, that was my downfall. All I know is most of the time I really had no idea where I was,” he recalled to Stuff in 2017.

“We went from city to city so fast. You know, pretty much you spend most of the time in a hotel or the venue. They all pretty much look the same, so it became a blur. That’s why a lot of rock stars go crazy. The whole thing is so surreal,” he added.

Even if Ace doesn’t remember his most outrageous stories, the fact that he is still here and survived the crazy life he led for so many decades is an achievement in itself and this perfume anecdote is almost guaranteed to be on the tamer end of what he got up to.

Même si Ace ne se souvient pas de ses histoires les plus scandaleuses, le fait qu'il soit toujours là et qu'il ait survécu à la vie folle qu'il a menée pendant tant de décennies est un exploit en soi et cette anecdote de parfum est presque garantie d'être à la fin de ce qui il s'est levé.

Ace Frehley, KISS co-founder and 2014 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee, continues his reflections on a lifetime in music with "Origins Vol. 2". No stranger to cover versions throughout his musical history — having recorded, rebranded and repossessed such notable nuggets as "New York Groove", "Do Ya" and "I Wanna Go Back" over the course of his eight previous studio efforts — this new collection presents a thoughtful and exciting selection of songs that inspired and helped shape the legendary guitarist. Foremost of importance to the original Spaceman is delivering an album his fans will enjoy, but one where every song also has a place in his life's jukebox.

Describing the process in selecting the songs on this album, Ace comments: "I just thought about the songs that I used to play in clubs when I was doing other people's material. I went through my album collection and thought about the songs that influenced me the most. It was fun picking out the songs. It's a pretty well-rounded record and I think the fans will enjoy it." That spirit of fun is carried through with exquisite execution and guitar aficionados are going to enjoy Frehley's fresh interpretations of these classic songs.

As the second volume focusing on his musical origins, Ace has also grown since "Origins Vol. 1" was released in April 2016. That album hit No. 23 on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming his fourth Top 40 and second-highest-charting solo album — and there's no questioning Ace's productivity with this album being his fifth recorded work in a decade. Ace chuckles: "Since I had one covers album under my belt, the process of doing 'Origins Vol. 2' was easier because I had put together a formula, picking guest stars and so on." The challenge for him was to put a suitable personal stamp on the material, and "Origins Vol. 2" is replete with special touches that both honor and embellish the material.

Perhaps appropriately, "Origins Vol. 2" kicks off with LED ZEPPELIN's "Good Times Bad Times". Ace is very much aware of that song being the first song on the first side of the first ZEPPELIN album, and the first single that the band released in the United States (backed with "Communication Breakdown", it reached No. 80 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in April 1969). Ace recalls: "Right off the bat, 'Good Times, Bad Times' by LED ZEPPELIN came to mind, because it was the first LED ZEPPELIN song on the first album they released. So, that was at the top of my list. I just wasn't sure I was going to be able to be able to sing it, but somehow I pulled it off." It contrasts well with "Bring It On Home", recorded for "Origins Vol. 1", and Ace has added some lyrics at the end of the song, "directed at people over the years who have done me wrong." These match the fierce vocal and fiery soloing on a cut that includes his solo band guitarist Jeremy Asbrock and drummer Matt Starr.

MOUNTAIN's " " follows — utilizing the lyrics from the Japanese album insert Never In My Life with the more appropriate "bolt of lightning" reference. For some this song is less well known than the signature "Mississippi Queen", but it features a riff that Jimi Hendrix purportedly dug on hearing while MOUNTAIN worked in the studio in 1970. Fans of the heavier Frehley-penned KISS classic "Strange Ways" should dig the riff too. For Ace, the song ties back to his youth. "I distinctly remember in high school, I went to see a friend's band, and they were performing it on a stage in the basement of a church," he says. "I wasn't that familiar with this song, but the guitar player in the band was playing it really good, so I went home and learned it."

In addition to connecting with old songs, Frehley has also reconnected with old friends on "Origins Vol. 2". The first of these making an appearance is keyboard player Rob Sabino, who has performed with the likes of Peter Frampton and SIMON & GARFUNKEL. Sabino had been involved in both the CRAZY JOE & THE VARIABLE SPEED BAND album (the first project to feature Ace outside of KISS in 1980) and the FREHLEY'S COMET debut (1987). On "Origins Vol. 2", Rob takes on the role of DEEP PURPLE's late Jon Lord on "Space Truckin'", one of a pair of tracks recorded at The Creation Lab in Turlock, California. Ace notes: "'Space Truckin'' was actually recorded years ago and then I just re-recorded some parts and changed it a little. We never ended up putting it on a record, so it was just sitting around. It turned out very well. Rob Sabino is a very accomplished studio musician and we actually grew up in the Bronx together, so we go way back."

Longtime fans may be surprised at the inclusion of a BEATLES song, the 1965 non-album single B-side "I'm Down". Under questioning, Ace laughs: "Everyone was telling me, 'You gotta do a BEATLES song, Ace. You didn't do one on the first record.' The early BEATLES inspired me more than the later records, because they were more raw and more rock and roll. I decided to tackle 'I'm Down' and I thought it came out great. John 5 did a great solo on the song, and then we riffed out at the end." In addition to the stellar contribution to the song by John 5, it is also one of several tracks on which engineer Alex Salzman performs bass. When recording, there's no plan, Ace details. "I normally try and keep the bass lines pretty simple and pretty close to the original recordings," he says. "Usually, when I record, it's just me and Alex in a studio and then we add the drums last. Alex is a very accomplished musician, he plays keyboards, guitar, and bass. But I'd sometimes say, 'Alex, why don't you throw the bass down?' I just got finished doing a guitar solo or a vocal. And I guess a little of it has to do with it is that sometimes I'm just lazy!" There's certainly no laziness in the performance that does more than a little justice to the original and Ace gets the opportunity to rip out a rocking traditional guitar solo.

Another non-album single follows, originally recorded by THE ROLLING STONES in 1968, with Ace tackling "Jumpin' Jack Flash". The exquisite Lita Ford returns on vocals for her second "Origins" project with Ace, who's very fond of her. "Lita's like my sister," he says. "I've known Lita since she was in THE RUNAWAYS and we've always remained friends over the years. She did a great job on 'Wild Thing', so I decided to bring her back for this record. She actually stayed over at my house in San Diego and I coached her on the vocal for two days. I think it came out great!" And throwing out another playful Frehley tease, Ace ad-libs "Kick out the Jams Motherf**ker!" at the end, the starting lyric of the legendary MC5's best-known track. Ace had met the MC5's Wayne Kramer at the MAP Fund Rockin' For Recovery benefit at the Club Nokia in Los Angeles in May 2014 and the two have remained friends. According to Ace, "If the record company decides they want an 'Origins Vol. 3' somewhere down the road, you wouldn't be surprised if I did that song."

In terms of his musical history, one of Ace's first concerts was MURRAY THE K's "Music In The Fifth Dimension" in March 1967 at the RKO Theater in Manhattan. On the bill that day, far below headlining Mitch Ryder and Wilson Pickett, were CREAM and THE WHO, who were both making their U.S. debut during the nine-day engagement. Guitarist Eric Clapton made a lasting impression on Ace, even though CREAM only performed a couple of songs during a short set. More than half a century later, Frehley makes a lasting impression with the power of his cover of "Politician". Ace is adamant: "I try not to get involved with politics. I think it dilutes rock 'n' roll and should be kept separate. If people want to interpret any type of political message in my songs, so be it, but I don't do it on purpose." However, musically, the song allows space for both he and guest John 5 to shine with some stunning guitar interplay. One notable part of the track is the crossfaded double solo which Ace notes: "We used an auto-crossover plug in that comes with Pro Tools. If you listen to that long solo with headphones, our solos crisscross back and forth, left to right. We didn't plan it; it was like one take and it just worked out that way. He [John] didn't step on my parts and I didn't really step on his parts." John has become something of a regular on Ace's "Origins" projects, and not without reason. "John is a really talented musician and he can play many different styles of music," Ace says. "He's a much more versatile guitarist than myself, so I respect him for that — plus he's a good friend! He's very fast in the studio."

"My daughter Monique thought that this was the best song on the album. I did 'White Room' on 'Origins, Vol. 1', and I was trying to decide on another CREAM song to do. I started jamming on that riff and it just seemed so strong. I wasn't sure of whether or not I'd be able to sing it, so we spent 15 minutes tracking the riff and then I tried the vocal and was actually able to sing it."

Ace's humor is clearly present with the inclusion of THE KINKS' "Lola". A Top 10 hit in 1970, the then controversial but tongue-in-cheek song was always a favorite of his. "I always thought that it was a great song and when I was a kid it was a big hit," he says. "I just started fooling around with it and realized I could sing it — which is a prerequisite. My new girlfriend is a great singer as well, so after the album was recorded, I had her replace the original background vocal." Lara brings special vocal seasoning to that song, and "Good Times, Bad Times".

Sentimentality is also represented with a smoking cover of HUMBLE PIE's "30 Days In The Hole", which features CHEAP TRICK's Robin Zander on lead vocals. Not only had CHEAP TRICK opened for KISS on tour in the 1970s, Ace and CHEAP TRICK were both a part of the 2017 "The Children Matter" benefit concert for hurricane victims. At the time, Robin had expressed an interest in working with Frehley, so "Origins Vol. 2" brings together the two Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame stars. Ace, a lifetime fan of Steve Marriott, knew he'd need some help on the track. He admits: "I tried singing it a couple of times, but there's no way I was going to be able to do it justice, so I gave Robin Zander, an old friend of mine from CHEAP TRICK, a call. And he killed it." Once again, the song is firmly rooted in Ace's personal musical journey: "I've always been a huge fan of HUMBLE PIE and was present both nights they recorded live at the Fillmore. I was lucky enough to meet Steve Marriott at a party in New York City. I've always idolized Steve Marriott's voice and his range. He was such a little guy, but he could really belt it out."

Over the decades, Ace has interacted with fellow guitarist Bruce Kulick on numerous occasions. The two also share a common love for Jimi Hendrix, and a song like "Manic Depression" was the perfect vehicle for both guitarists to shine, with Ace delivering a perfect vocal for the mood. Originally released on "Are You Experienced" (1967), Ace recalls: "Bruce offered his services and I thought that it was a great idea. I've been friends with Bruce through thick and thin, and when Bruce told me he would love to do a track I was happy to accommodate him. He did the bulk of the solo, and then he and I soloed off together towards the end." Bruce executes a dynamic solo with plenty of the elements fans of both guitarists will appreciate.

Like the studio version of KISS's "Rock And Roll All Nite", the PAUL REVERE & THE RAIDERS hit "Kicks" didn't originally include a guitar solo. This limitation didn't prevent Ace from developing the arrangement and adding a perfect "three-part harmony guitar solo that really Ace-i-fies the song." The first of two Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil compositions on the album, the song was noted for being an early antidrug anthem ahead of its time (1966). And, of course, the song has a fabulous immediately noticeable riff! Ace comments: "They had that look like THE KINKS had in the early days. I always thought that it was a great song and it always stood out and had a catchy riff, so I decided to put that on this record. I think that it's a good message for the youth of today."

The second of the Mann/Weil songs is the Vietnam-era anthem "We Gotta Get Out of This Place". Originally recorded by THE ANIMALS, the song hit No. 13 on the charts in October 1965 and was later included on the U.S. version of "Animal Tracks". Ace delivers a raw vocal matched by his solo, one that he performed very early during his musical career. He recalls: "I always liked that song by THE ANIMALS. It was one of the first songs that I performed live when I was in a band with my brother. We even had a guy playing a Farfisa organ. It brings back good memories and I didn't even think about its political connotations, I just think it's a great song. I recorded that one a while back when I did 'Space Truckin''."

Rounding out the album is the bonus track "She". This song was performed by KISS at their very first show at the Coventry in January 1973 and was revamped for inclusion on "Dressed To Kill" a couple of years later. It's perhaps even more fitting than the KISS songs included on "Origins Vol. 1", dating back to the very genesis of his time in that band. Ace, however, is pragmatic about its inclusion. "It was a song that we had decided to perform live the last three or four months we were touring, before everything got shut down," he says. "We were having a lot of fun doing it live, so 'She' was one of the first songs that popped into my mind as a KISS bonus track for the album." And with its inclusion, Ace allows his solo band members — Jeremy Asbrock, Ryan Spencer Cook and Philip Shouse — an opportunity to shine, while answering the demand of many fans to get the popular performers on a KISS-related record together!

"Origins Vol. 2" is a well-thought-out, but not over-thought, album. For Ace, keeping things organic is an important part of crafting an album's atmosphere. "I just let it happen," he says. "Things evolve when I start doing these records and I try not to plan too much ahead. I like spontaneity. I like coming up with ideas off the top of my head. It's the same way I write guitar solos. When things are fresh and spontaneous, they always come out better for the listener."

Ace gets the last word with a direct message to his fans: "I'm happy with the end result and I hope the fans like it as well."

" Les premiers BEATLES m'ont inspiré plus que les disques suivants, car ils étaient plus bruts et plus rock and roll. J'ai décidé de m'attaquer à «I'm Down» et j'ai trouvé que c'était génial. John 5 a fait un super solo sur la chanson, et puis nous avons riffé à la fin. " En plus de la contribution exceptionnelle à la chanson de John 5, c'est aussi l'un des nombreux morceaux sur lesquels l'ingénieur Alex Salzman joue de la basse. Lors de l'enregistrement, il n'y a pas de plan, détaille Ace. «J'essaie normalement de garder les lignes de basse assez simples et assez proches des enregistrements originaux», dit-il. «Habituellement, quand j'enregistre, il n'y a qu'Alex et moi dans un studio, puis nous ajoutons la batterie en dernier. Alex est un musicien très accompli, il joue du clavier, de la guitare et de la basse. Mais je dis parfois: 'Alex, pourquoi tu ne jettes pas la basse? Je viens juste de finir de faire un solo de guitare ou une voix. Et je suppose que ça a un peu à voir avec ça, c'est que parfois je suis juste paresseux! " Il n'y a certainement pas de paresse dans la performance qui fasse plus qu'un peu de justice à l'original et Ace a l'occasion de déchirer un solo de guitare traditionnel rock.

Un autre single non-album suit, initialement enregistré par THE ROLLING STONES en 1968, avec Ace s'attaquant à "Jumpin 'Jack Flash". L'exquise Lita Ford revient au chant pour son deuxième projet "Origins" avec Ace, qui l'aime beaucoup. «Lita est comme ma sœur», dit-il. "Je connais Lita depuis qu'elle était dans THE RUNAWAYS et nous sommes toujours restés amis au fil des ans. Elle a fait un excellent travail sur 'Wild Thing', alors j'ai décidé de la ramener pour cet album. Elle est en fait restée chez ma maison à San Diego et je l'ai coachée sur la voix pendant deux jours. Je pense que ça s'est bien passé! " Et en jetant un autre taquin ludique de Frehley, Ace ad-libs "Kick out the Jams Motherf ** ker!" à la fin, les paroles de départ du titre le plus connu du légendaire MC5. Ace avait rencontré Wayne Kramer du MC5 au MAP Fund Rockin 'For Recovery au Club Nokia de Los Angeles en mai 2014 et les deux sont restés amis. Selon Ace, "Si la maison de disques décide qu'ils veulent un 'Origins Vol. 3' quelque part sur la route, vous ne seriez pas surpris si je faisais cette chanson."

En ce qui concerne son histoire musicale, l'un des premiers concerts d'Ace fut "Music In The Fifth Dimension" de MURRAY THE K en mars 1967 au RKO Theatre de Manhattan. À l'affiche ce jour-là, bien en dessous des têtes d'affiche de Mitch Ryder et Wilson Pickett, se trouvaient CREAM et THE WHO, qui faisaient tous deux leurs débuts aux États-Unis pendant les neuf jours de fiançailles. Le guitariste Eric Clapton a fait une impression durable sur Ace, même si CREAM n'a interprété que quelques chansons pendant un court set. Plus d'un demi-siècle plus tard, Frehley fait une impression durable avec la puissance de sa couverture de "Politician". Ace est catégorique: "J'essaie de ne pas m'impliquer dans la politique. Je pense que cela dilue le rock'n'roll et devrait être séparé. Si les gens veulent interpréter n'importe quel type de message politique dans mes chansons, tant pis, mais je ne ne le fais pas exprès. " Cependant, musicalement, la chanson permet à lui et à son invité John 5 de briller avec une interaction de guitare époustouflante. Une partie notable de la piste est le double solo crossfaded que Ace note: "Nous avons utilisé un plug-in auto-crossover fourni avec Pro Tools. Si vous écoutez ce long solo avec des écouteurs, nos solos se croisent d'avant en arrière, de gauche à droite. . Nous ne l'avons pas planifié; c'était comme une prise et ça a marché comme ça. " John est devenu un habitué des projets "Origins" d'Ace, et non sans raison. «John est un musicien vraiment talentueux et il peut jouer de nombreux styles de musique différents», déclare Ace. "C'est un guitariste beaucoup plus polyvalent que moi, donc je le respecte pour ça - en plus c'est un bon ami! Il est très rapide en studio."

«Ma fille Monique pensait que c'était la meilleure chanson de l'album. J'ai fait 'White Room' sur 'Origins, Vol. 1', et j'essayais de décider d'une autre chanson de CREAM à faire. J'ai commencé à jammer sur ce riff et ça me semblait tellement fort. Je ne savais pas si je serais capable de le chanter, alors nous avons passé 15 minutes à suivre le riff et ensuite j'ai essayé la voix et j'ai pu la chanter. "

L'humour d'Ace est clairement présent avec l'inclusion de "Lola" de THE KINKS. Un hit du Top 10 en 1970, la chanson alors controversée mais ironique a toujours été une de ses préférées. «J'ai toujours pensé que c'était une excellente chanson et quand j'étais enfant, c'était un grand succès», dit-il. "J'ai juste commencé à m'amuser avec et j'ai réalisé que je pouvais le chanter - ce qui est une condition préalable. Ma nouvelle petite amie est aussi une excellente chanteuse, donc après l'enregistrement de l'album, je lui ai fait remplacer la voix de fond d'origine." Lara apporte un assaisonnement vocal spécial à cette chanson, et "Good Times, Bad Times".

Sentimentality est également représenté avec une reprise fumante de "30 Days In The Hole" de HUMBLE PIE, qui met en vedette Robin Zander de CHEAP TRICK au chant principal. Non seulement CHEAP TRICK avait ouvert pour KISS en tournée dans les années 1970, mais Ace et CHEAP TRICK faisaient tous deux partie du concert-bénéfice "The Children Matter" 2017 pour les victimes de l'ouragan. À l'époque, Robin avait exprimé son intérêt à travailler avec Frehley, donc "Origins Vol. 2" réunit les deux stars du Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. J'ai eu la chance de rencontrer Steve Marriott lors d'une soirée à New York. J'ai toujours idolâtré la voix de Steve Marriott et sa gamme. C'était un si petit gars, mais il pouvait vraiment le dire. Au fil des décennies, Ace a interagi avec son collègue guitariste Bruce Kulick à de nombreuses reprises. Les deux partagent également un amour commun pour Jimi Hendrix, et une chanson comme "Manic Depression" était le moyen idéal pour les deux guitaristes de briller, avec Ace livrant une voix parfaite pour l'ambiance. Initialement sorti sur "Are You Experienced" (1967), Ace se souvient: "Bruce a offert ses services et j'ai pensé que c'était une excellente idée. J'ai été ami avec Bruce de bout en bout, et quand Bruce m'a dit qu'il aimerait pour faire un morceau, j'étais heureux de l'accueillir. Il a fait la majeure partie du solo, puis lui et moi sommes partis ensemble vers la fin. " Bruce exécute un solo dynamique avec de nombreux éléments que les fans des deux guitaristes apprécieront.

Comme la version studio de "Rock And Roll All Nite" de KISS, le hit de PAUL REVERE & THE RAIDERS "Kicks" n'incluait pas à l'origine un solo de guitare. Cette limitation n'a pas empêché Ace de développer l'arrangement et d'ajouter un parfait "solo de guitare harmonique en trois parties qui vraiment Ace-i-fie la chanson." La première des deux compositions de Barry Mann et Cynthia Weil sur l'album, la chanson était connue pour être un hymne antidrogue précoce en avance sur son temps (1966). Et, bien sûr, la chanson a un fabuleux riff immédiatement perceptible! Ace commente: "Ils ressemblaient à ceux de THE KINKS au début. J'ai toujours pensé que c'était une chanson géniale et elle se démarquait toujours et avait un riff accrocheur, alors j'ai décidé de mettre ça sur cet album. Je pense que c'est un bon message pour les jeunes d'aujourd'hui. "

La deuxième des chansons de Mann / Weil est l'hymne de l'époque vietnamienne "We Gotta Get Out of This Place". Enregistrée à l'origine par THE ANIMALS, la chanson a atteint la 13e place des charts en octobre 1965 et a ensuite été incluse dans la version américaine de "Animal Tracks". Ace délivre une voix brute assortie à son solo, celui qu'il a interprété très tôt au cours de sa carrière musicale. Il se souvient: "J'ai toujours aimé cette chanson de THE ANIMALS. C'était l'une des premières chansons que j'ai interprétées en live quand j'étais dans un groupe avec mon frère. On avait même un gars qui jouait d'un orgue Farfisa. Ça me rappelle de bons souvenirs et Je n'ai même pas pensé à ses connotations politiques, je pense juste que c'est une excellente chanson. J'ai enregistré celle-là il y a quelque temps quand j'ai fait 'Space Truckin' '. "

Pour compléter l'album, le titre bonus "She". Cette chanson a été interprétée par KISS lors de leur tout premier spectacle au Coventry en janvier 1973 et a été réorganisée pour être incluse dans "Dressed To Kill" quelques années plus tard. C'est peut-être encore plus approprié que les chansons de KISS incluses dans "Origins Vol. 1", remontant à la genèse même de son temps dans ce groupe. Ace, cependant, est pragmatique quant à son inclusion. «C'était une chanson que nous avions décidé de jouer en live les trois ou quatre derniers mois de tournée, avant que tout ne soit arrêté», dit-il. "Nous nous amusions beaucoup à le faire en live, alors 'She' a été l'une des premières chansons qui m'est venue à l'esprit en tant que morceau bonus de KISS pour l'album." "Origins Vol. 2" est un album bien pensé, mais pas trop pensé. Oui, c'est vraiment le meilleur album qu'il a sorti dans les années 80.

Cela sera probablement onéreux de le récupérer car il ne va sortir qu'aux Etats-Unis.

C'est clair, j'espère un jour tomber sur l'original chez un disquaire l'espoir fait vivre !

Former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley may have risked his life a number of times with alcohol and drugs, but if it wasn't for his addictions, he never would have met comedian and Blues Brothers creator John Belushi, who eventually became a close friend.

In his 2012 book No Regrets, Frehley recalled how the pair bonded at drummer Peter Criss’ house, and how he was later able to save a Blues Brothers show when Belushi suffered an attack of self-doubt.

Space Ace recalled how he’d “just scored some really good shit” and shared it with Criss’ house guests while making wisecracks. “John seemed to be laughing at all my jokes,” he wrote. “I had been told for years that I was a funny guy, but to be making a professional comedian crack up felt even more rewarding.”

Frehley added that "there’s a strange bonding process that happens sometimes between two people when alcohol and drugs are involved. That bond was cemented that evening between me and John, and remained that way until the end. We were both famous and we both loved music and comedy, and we also enjoyed getting fucked up.”

Before long Frehley was a regular guest in Belushi’s private bar, which he owned alongside Blues Brothers colleague Dan Aykroyd. The venue was disguised as an abandoned building; they needed it because they couldn’t go out in New York City without being mobbed by fans. “Anyone driving or walking by on a Saturday night or Sunday morning might have thought it was a mob hangout, because the street would be filled with stretch limousines,” Frehley noted. “But in reality the bar was filled with the cast and guests of Saturday Night Live.”

He recalled evenings of serving as bartender, dancing on the bar and playing guitar with Belushi on drums as they invited women to strip for them. He admitted it was sheer indulgence but professed they both loved every minute.

Then during summer 1980 came a moment that Frehley said displayed Belushi’s “sensitivity and insecurity. “John wasn’t quite the egomaniac he appeared to be onstage,” the guitarist said. The incident took place halfway through a Blues Brothers show at the Palladium in New York. The band took a break after the first set, but word came from backstage that no one was allowed in the dressing room.

The promoter, Ron Delsener, told Frehley that “John didn’t want to go back out to do the second half of the show, supposedly because his voice was shot. ‘What can I do?’ I asked. Ron said, ‘Can you try talking to him? I told him you were here.’”

The guitarist recalled looking every bit the rock star, getting access to the dressing room when no one else could – including Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, who were at the show – and taking a hotly dressed date with him.

Frehley advised Belushi to drink some tea with honey, but what concerned the guitarist more was the SNL star's “sadness and fatigue”: “‘I don’t think I can do it, Ace,’ he said. I chuckled. ‘Hey, nobody really gives a shit. Stop worrying. I can’t sing either. I just fake it most of the time, but I get out there anyway. Hell, Mick Jagger can’t sing. [Bob] Dylan can’t sing. They just kinda talk the words. … Remember, the show must go on, and you’re a professional.’ John smiled. ‘I guess.’”

The pair had a beer and then some cocaine as Belushi’s mood gradually improved. “I told John to knock ‘em dead and I’d see him after the show," Frehley recalled. "I left the dressing room smiling and informed Delsener that the show would begin shortly.”

He went on to tell of his regret at refusing to meet Belushi in the winter of 1982. The comedian was in town briefly, but Frehley was taking one of his regular breaks from partying and didn’t want to be around his friend’s bad influence at the time. The phone call was the last time they spoke: Soon afterward Belushi died of a drug overdose.

“John Belushi was a great guy and a gifted performer,” Frehley wrote. “I feel very lucky to have known him. His death was a tragedy and was the catalyst for me to clean up my act for several months afterward. … He was unique. I miss him. I think everyone does.”

Ace Frehley has released a new version of the Beatles' "I'm Down," the second track from his upcoming covers album Origins, Vol. 2.

The former Kiss guitarist is joined by longtime Rob Zombie guitarist John 5 on this take of the Paul McCartney-penned B-side, which originally backed the Fab Four's 1965 "Help!" single.

Ever since his 1978 cover of Hello's "New York Groove" was a surprise hit, Frehley has included at least one cover song on each of his solo albums. Origins, Vol. 2 follows 2016's Origins, Vol. 1 as his second collection fully dedicated to songs written by other artists.

"The great thing about doing a covers record is I don't have to write the songs," he previously explained. "So, all I have to do is kind of make it my own, maybe change the solo a little, maybe change the arrangement a little and then get some guest stars."

In July, Frehley shared the upcoming album's first single, a cover of Deep Purple's 1972 Machine Head anthem "Space Truckin'." Origins, Vol. 2 also includes Cheap Trick's Robin Zander singing Humble Pie's "30 Days in the Hole," Lita Ford tackling the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and fellow Kiss alumni Bruce Kulick on Jimi Hendrix's "Manic Depression."

Origins, Vol. 2 comes out on Sept. 18. Frehley recently revealed that he's taking advantage of the COVID-19 lockdown to begin work on a new album of original material, which would be his first since 2018's Spaceman.

Je ne connaissais pas ce titre "I'm Down" des Beatles… Pourtant, j'aime beaucoup ce groupe mythique. En revanche, je préfère la seconde partie de leur carrière, lorsqu'ils sont moins rock'n'roll.

En attendant, je trouve que l'on ne peut pas enlever à Ace la qualité de s'approprier parfaitement les titres qu'il reprend. Comme pour "New York Groove", "2,000 man", "Do Ya" et tous les morceaux qu'il a repris durant toute sa carrière ; il y met vraiment son coup de griffe et cela change tout…
Après on peut être chroniquement de mauvaise foi (ce qui n'arrive jamais sur ce forum ) mais sur "I'm Down", son jeu de guitare et celui de son invité colle à merveille…
J'attends vraiment impatiemment la sortie de l'album le 18 pour écouter l'ensemble de ces reprises !
