Right after the Creatures of the Night Tour, the band went back in to the studio to complete the follow-up album. Michael James Jackson would stay on board as the producer as the sound he got on “Creatures” was amazing and the band wanted to continue that harder sound. Vinnie Vincent was now an official member of the band as he was on the cover. However, he actually wasn’t an “official member of the band” as he never signed his contract which became an extreme soar spot with Vinnie and the band which we will discuss a little later on in our story.

The ‘Lick it Up’ album, which came out on September 23, 1983, garnered way more attention than ‘Creatures’ for one main reason. The band finally took off the make-up which is something they had been talking about doing since at least the ‘Music from the Elder’ era. They finally did it and the big reveal was on MTV during primetime. I remember this vividly as this was event TV for me as I was a lifelong Kiss fan at the time (and still am today). I remember seeing each member in make-up and then without and I remember thinking, “PUT IT BACK ON!!! OOOOH THE HORROR!!!” No, it really wasn’t that bad. It was actually pretty cool. And just like that Kiss was back in the public eye and they had some songs that could back it up.

Okay, now back to Vinnie Vincent. Vinnie co-wrote 8 of the 10 songs on this album as well as several on “Creatures of the Night. As a result, his ego was starting to ride higher than Snoop Dogg on a Saturday night. Vinnie felt he was fully responsible for reviving Kiss. He was their savior and as a result deserved more money. The band was able to get him to go on Tour with them for the ‘Lick It Up’ Tour, but Vinnie became more and more difficult. If you’ve been to Kiss shows, you know they are pretty timed-out and Vinnie would let his solos drag out longer and longer each night. It got so bad that after one show he and Paul almost came to blows. After the tour, Vinnie was done and he was out of the band. And for the record, Vinnie DID NOT SAVE KISS!! I think it was a mixture of Michael James Jackson, Vinnie, Paul, Eric and the make-up coming off.

The album was just as heavy as ‘Creatures’ but for some reason, they didn’t capture the same bombastic drum sound they had before. Eric still sounded great, but it wasn’t as front and center. When asked why they didn’t repeat that sound from ‘Creatures’, the simple answer was because that album didn’t sell so why would they repeat it. Good point. That doesn’t mean this album didn’t sound great, in fact, it sounded incredible and was almost as good as ‘Creatures’.

The album did very well, in fact, it was the best performing album since at least ‘Dynasty’. The album went Platinum and reached #24 on the Billboard Charts. Kiss was back and they would hang around throughout the rest of the decade without make-up and on to a new era of Kiss…the 80’s Non Make Up Era. In fact, this was the first tour I got to see Kiss. I had been listening to Kiss for about 10 years at this point and I was only about 14 at this time. However, now it was me discovering Kiss on my own and not from my brother’s albums. Except for my brother did buy me the ticket and gave it to me as a birthday present on my 15th Birthday and the show was the very next day. I got to go see them for the first time on December 26, 1983. Here is the ticket stub which I still have today.


Enough of the memories, let us get to the music.


The album picks up right where ‘Creatures of the Night’ left off with the song “Exciter”. It was loud, it was heavy and it was awesome.  Paul takes on the vocals for the opener and in a much higher range. The song is a frantic barrage of sound and is such a screamer that it was great opening choice and sets the tone for the whole album. The song was written by Paul and Vinnie, but strangely the solo on this song was not Vinnie. They brought in Rick Derringer to handle the solo.  It is a great solo!!  Rick was brought in since Vinnie didn’t have the right feel for the song. He struggled getting the solo they wanted and Rick could.

Up next is “Not For The Innocent” which was written by Gene and Vinnie. The song is perfect for Gene as it is so dark and foreboding as it drips with the demon personae telling the world to “lock up your daughters”.  The album has a couple of my favorite Gene songs and this is one of them.  The drum sound by Eric Carr is sensational although not as powerful as ‘Creatures’ is still packs a wallop. Vinnie’s guitar solo on this was spectacular and seemed quite long.  Outside of “Exciter”, Vinnie was sensational throughout.

“Lick It Up” is the band’s first single and first video without make-up and the song only went to #66.  It opens with a nice little riff and a little scream from Paul.  Paul’s second song on the album and it was meant for the radio.  This is a pure 80’s, melodic rock song and no wonder it still gets played a lot.  The video was so 80’s as well.  Real cheesy and had the band in a post-apocalyptic world.  It is a little comical watching it now.  The song, however, is about a guy trying to talk his girlfriend in to doing the nasty so doesn’t really fit with the video.

“Young and Wasted” is up next and it is Gene’s turn again which is obvious as the song is a little heavier and the bass is a little more prominent.  Another great rocker.  The cool thing about this song was when they played it live, Eric Carr wound up singing and it was awesome.  Eric had a great rock voice and I wish he would have gotten to do more on their albums. A major opportunity “wasted”.

“Gimme More” was actually a sign of what was to come on future albums.  It was fast paced and featured Paul on vocals, but it was one of the weaker songs.  It got you moving as they seem to be flirting with a little speed metal here, but it was lacking something overall.  Maybe heart, I am not sure. I wouldn’t take it off the album, only a comment that it is a weaker strong song.


The second single of the album, “All Hell’s Breakin’ Loose”, kicks off side two.  This might have been a first for Kiss as it actually contained a little rapping by Paul.  Maybe not rapping, but a lot of speaking in that style which could be confused for rapping.  Whatever he is doing, I loved it, but I read somewhere that Eric was not fond of it.  Musically, it has a memorable guitar riff that when I hear it I know within milliseconds that this is the song. The song is actually one of the rare times where all band members are credited with writing credit which is great to see Eric get in on the fun.  Eric was actually the primary writer of the song which might explain why he wasn’t fond of Paul’s take on the lyrics.

“A Million to One” was up next and the song was written by Paul Stanley and Vinnie Vincent which tells the story of our hero of the song telling his ex-lover that there is basically no hope in hell she will find a love as great as his.  Paul’s cocky attitude in the lyrics and the vocals propel this into one of his greatest performances on a song on any album. Musically, the song hits on all cylinders as well.  The powerful sound coming from Eric’s drum gave this song an extra punch that you felt with each swing of the sticks. Not to be outshined, Vinnie’s guitar playing is masterful with great riffs and a great solo all along with the underrated rhythm guitar of Paul.

Gene now controls the final three songs on the album and it starts with my favorite one of his from this one called “Fits Like a Glove”.  The guitar playing is freaking incredible on this song.  Vinnie lets it completely rip from opening riff to the final notes.  Vocally, Gene nails it as well. He has these long, drawn out screams that are killer.  It is fast and heavy and all I want in a Gene sung song.  It is a “hot knife, through butter”. And that is a good example of how cheesy and crappy the lyrics are, but mixed with the music all is right with the world.

“Dance All Over Your Face” is a rather dark, violent song.  It sounds like Gene is going to beat the crap out of his girlfriend for cheating on him with another man.  It is the weakest Gene song on the album and not one of my favorites for the violence against women feel to it. As a result, I don’t really feel anything else needs to be mentioned about this song.

The final song on the album, “And on the 8th Day”, is about God creating Rock & Roll on the 8th day and sadly this song came from it.  It isn’t a powerful enough song for the topic.  It is another weak one of Gene’s which will become common for the next several albums.  I did like Eric’s drumming as there are some bombastic moments and he even has a marching beat that drives the song forward, but I am just not a fan of it overall. Never connected to it.

The Track Score is 7 1/2 out of 10 or 75%. The album could have used a little more Paul then Gene and we will get that on future 80’s album as Gene became a little less than involved (again, another story for another time). The overall album was fantastic. It wasn’t as perfect as ‘Creatures of the Night”, but it is still one of the upper echelon of albums they have done. I would give the album a 4.0 out of 5.0 Stars as the songs that are on here that are good are really good and “A Million to One” might be one of my all time favorite tracks. The first of the Non Make-up era album is a smash, but how long will that continue? And now that Vinnie is out as guitarist, who is next and how long will they last?? So many questions.

Juste après la tournée Creatures of the Night, le groupe est retourné en studio pour terminer l'album suivant. Michael James Jackson resterait à bord en tant que producteur car le son qu'il a obtenu sur "Creatures" était incroyable et le groupe voulait continuer ce son plus dur. Vinnie Vincent était maintenant un membre officiel du groupe car il était sur la couverture. Cependant, il n'était en fait pas un "membre officiel du groupe" car il n'a jamais signé son contrat qui est devenu un point de départ extrême avec Vinnie et le groupe dont nous parlerons un peu plus tard dans notre histoire.

L'album "Lick it Up", sorti le 23 septembre 1983, a attiré beaucoup plus d'attention que "Creatures" pour une raison principale. Le groupe a finalement enlevé le maquillage, ce dont ils parlaient depuis au moins l'ère "Music from the Elder". Ils l'ont finalement fait et la grande révélation a eu lieu sur MTV aux heures de grande écoute. Je m'en souviens très bien car il s'agissait d'un événement télévisé pour moi, car j'étais un fan de Kiss depuis toujours à l'époque (et je le suis toujours aujourd'hui). Je me souviens d'avoir vu chaque membre maquillé puis sans maquillage et je me souviens avoir pensé: «REMETS-LE !!! OOOOH L'HORREUR !!!” Non, ce n'était vraiment pas si mal. C'était assez cool en fait. Et juste comme ça, Kiss était de retour aux yeux du public et ils avaient des chansons qui pourraient le soutenir.

Bon, revenons maintenant à Vinnie Vincent. Vinnie a co-écrit 8 des 10 chansons de cet album ainsi que plusieurs sur "Creatures of the Night". En conséquence, son ego commençait à monter plus haut que Snoop Dogg un samedi soir. Vinnie s'est senti entièrement responsable de la relance de Kiss. Il était leur sauveur et méritait donc plus d'argent. Le groupe a réussi à le faire partir en tournée avec eux pour la tournée «Lick It Up», mais Vinnie est devenu de plus en plus difficile. Si vous avez assisté à des spectacles de Kiss, vous savez qu'ils sont assez chronométrés et que Vinnie laissait ses solos s'éterniser de plus en plus chaque nuit. C'est devenu si mauvais qu'après un spectacle, Paul et lui en sont presque venus aux mains. Après la tournée, Vinnie avait terminé et il était hors du groupe. Et pour mémoire, Vinnie N'A PAS SAUVÉ KISS !! Je pense que c'était un mélange de Michael James Jackson, Vinnie, Paul, Eric et le maquillage qui se détachait.

L'album était tout aussi lourd que "Creatures", mais pour une raison quelconque, ils n'ont pas capturé le même son de batterie explosif qu'avant. Eric sonnait toujours bien, mais ce n'était pas aussi avant et central. Lorsqu'on leur a demandé pourquoi ils n'avaient pas répété ce son de "Creatures", la réponse simple était parce que cet album ne s'était pas vendu, alors pourquoi le répéteraient-ils. Bon point. Cela ne veut pas dire que cet album ne sonnait pas bien, en fait, il sonnait incroyable et était presque aussi bon que "Creatures".

L'album a très bien marché, en fait, c'était l'album le plus performant depuis au moins "Dynasty". L'album est devenu Platine et a atteint la 24e place du Billboard Charts. Kiss était de retour et ils traîneraient pendant le reste de la décennie sans maquillage et dans une nouvelle ère de Kiss… l'ère non maquillage des années 80. En fait, c'était la première tournée que j'ai pu voir Kiss. J'écoutais Kiss depuis environ 10 ans à ce moment-là et je n'avais que 14 ans environ à cette époque. Cependant, maintenant c'était moi qui découvrais Kiss par moi-même et non à partir des albums de mon frère. Sauf que mon frère m'a acheté le billet et me l'a offert comme cadeau d'anniversaire pour mon 15 e anniversaire et le spectacle a eu lieu le lendemain. J'ai pu aller les voir pour la première fois le 26 décembre 1983. Voici le talon du billet que j'ai encore aujourd'hui.

Assez de souvenirs, passons à la musique.

FACE UN :
L'album reprend là où "Creatures of the Night" s'est arrêté avec la chanson "Exciter". C'était bruyant, c'était lourd et c'était génial. Paul prend le chant pour l'ouverture et dans une gamme beaucoup plus élevée. La chanson est un barrage effréné de sons et est tellement criarde que c'était un excellent choix d'ouverture et donne le ton à tout l'album. La chanson a été écrite par Paul et Vinnie, mais étrangement, le solo de cette chanson n'était pas Vinnie. Ils ont fait venir Rick Derringer pour gérer le solo. C'est un super solo !! Rick a été amené car Vinnie n'avait pas la bonne idée de la chanson. Il a eu du mal à obtenir le solo qu'ils voulaient et Rick le pouvait.

Le suivant est "Not For The Innocent" qui a été écrit par Gene et Vinnie. La chanson est parfaite pour Gene car elle est si sombre et inquiétante qu'elle dégouline de personnages démoniaques disant au monde « d'enfermer vos filles ». L'album contient quelques-unes de mes chansons préférées de Gene et celle-ci en fait partie. Le son de batterie d'Eric Carr est sensationnel bien qu'il ne soit pas aussi puissant que "Creatures". Le solo de guitare de Vinnie à ce sujet était spectaculaire et semblait assez long. En dehors de "Exciter", Vinnie était sensationnel tout au long.

"Lick It Up" est le premier single et la première vidéo du groupe sans maquillage et la chanson n'est allée qu'au n ° 66. Il s'ouvre sur un joli petit riff et un petit cri de Paul. La deuxième chanson de Paul sur l'album et elle était destinée à la radio. C'est une pure chanson rock mélodique des années 80 et pas étonnant qu'elle soit encore beaucoup jouée. La vidéo était aussi des années 80. Vraiment ringard et avait le groupe dans un monde post-apocalyptique. C'est un peu comique de le regarder maintenant. La chanson, cependant, parle d'un gars qui essaie de convaincre sa petite amie de faire le méchant, donc cela ne correspond pas vraiment à la vidéo.

"Young and Wasted" est le suivant et c'est à nouveau au tour de Gene, ce qui est évident car la chanson est un peu plus lourde et la basse est un peu plus proéminente. Encore un super rockeur. Ce qui est cool avec cette chanson, c'est que quand ils l'ont jouée en live, Eric Carr a fini par chanter et c'était génial. Eric avait une super voix rock et j'aurais aimé qu'il en fasse plus sur leurs albums. Une opportunité majeure "gâchée".

"Gimme More" était en fait un signe de ce qui allait arriver sur les futurs albums. C'était rapide et mettait en vedette Paul au chant, mais c'était l'une des chansons les plus faibles. Cela vous a fait bouger car ils semblent flirter avec un peu de speed metal ici, mais il manquait quelque chose dans l'ensemble. Peut-être le cœur, je ne suis pas sûr. Je ne le retirerais pas de l'album, seulement un commentaire selon lequel c'est une chanson plus faible et plus forte.

FACE DEUX :
Le deuxième single de l'album, "All Hell's Breakin' Loose", donne le coup d'envoi de la face deux. C'était peut-être une première pour Kiss car il contenait en fait un petit rap de Paul. Peut-être pas rapper, mais beaucoup parler dans ce style qui pourrait être confondu avec du rap. Quoi qu'il fasse, j'adorais ça, mais j'ai lu quelque part qu'Eric n'aimait pas ça. Musicalement, il a un riff de guitare mémorable qui, quand je l'entends, je sais en quelques millisecondes que c'est la chanson. La chanson est en fait l'une des rares fois où tous les membres du groupe sont crédités d'un crédit d'écriture, ce qui est formidable de voir Eric s'amuser. Eric était en fait le principal auteur de la chanson, ce qui pourrait expliquer pourquoi il n'aimait pas le point de vue de Paul sur les paroles.

"A Million to One" était le suivant et la chanson a été écrite par Paul Stanley et Vinnie Vincent qui raconte l'histoire de notre héros de la chanson disant à son ex-amant qu'il n'y a fondamentalement aucun espoir en enfer, elle trouvera un amour aussi grand comme le sien. L'attitude arrogante de Paul dans les paroles et le chant propulse cela dans l'une de ses plus grandes performances sur une chanson de n'importe quel album. Musicalement, la chanson frappe également sur tous les cylindres. Le son puissant provenant de la batterie d'Eric a donné à cette chanson un coup de poing supplémentaire que vous ressentiez à chaque coup de baguette. Pour ne pas être éclipsé, le jeu de guitare de Vinnie est magistral avec de grands riffs et un grand solo tout au long de la guitare rythmique sous-estimée de Paul.

« Dance All Over Your Face » est une chanson assez sombre et violente. On dirait que Gene va tabasser sa petite amie pour l'avoir trompé avec un autre homme. C'est la chanson la plus faible de Gene sur l'album et pas l'une de mes préférées pour la violence contre les femmes qu'elle ressent. En conséquence, je ne pense pas vraiment que quoi que ce soit d'autre doive être mentionné à propos de cette chanson.

La dernière chanson de l'album, "And on the 8th Day", parle de Dieu créant le Rock & Roll le 8ème jour et malheureusement cette chanson en est issue. Ce n'est pas une chanson assez puissante pour le sujet. C'est un autre faible de Gene qui deviendra commun pour les prochains albums. J'ai aimé la batterie d'Eric car il y a des moments explosifs et il a même un rythme de marche qui fait avancer la chanson, mais je n'en suis tout simplement pas fan dans l'ensemble. Jamais connecté dessus.

Le score de la piste est de 7 1/2 sur 10 ou 75 %. L'album aurait pu utiliser un peu plus Paul que Gene et nous l'obtiendrons sur le futur album des années 80 car Gene est devenu un peu moins impliqué (encore une fois, une autre histoire pour une autre fois). L'album dans son ensemble était fantastique. Ce n'était pas aussi parfait que "Creatures of the Night", mais c'est toujours l'un des échelons supérieurs des albums qu'ils ont réalisés. Je donnerais à l'album 4,0 étoiles sur 5,0 car les chansons qui sont bonnes ici sont vraiment bonnes et "A Million to One" pourrait être l'une de mes chansons préférées de tous les temps. Le premier album de l'ère Non Make-up est un succès, mais combien de temps cela va-t-il continuer ? Et maintenant que Vinnie est sorti en tant que guitariste, qui est le prochain et combien de temps dureront-ils ?? Tant de questions.

Même si je ne suis pas un grand fan de l'album "Lick it Up", je reconnais aisément que le son est bien meilleur que durant la triste période "Dynasty"... "The Elder".
Mais et c'est un de mes seuls points d'accord avec la critique ci-dessus, quelque chose a disparu sur cet album par rapport à "Creatures". Je ne sais pas si c'est le son de la batterie ou quelque chose d'autre qui donnait une atmosphère vraiment exceptionnelle à tous les titres mais cela n'existe plus sur "Lick it Up" !

Enfin, je trouve lamentable de ne pas avoir réussi à conserver l'unité du groupe sur un album complet alors que les fauteurs de trouble ne sont plus là...

September 18, 1983. After 10 years and 10 albums, KISS removed their makeup. It was terrifying. And hilarious.

1983 was a time of transition for KISS. They were coming off of their Creatures of the Night/10th Anniversary Tour. The Creatures of the Night album ushered in a harder edge to the signature KISS sound. That album also marked the debut of guitarist Vinnie Vincent: he contributed guitar tracks to six of the tracks. By that point, guitarist Ace Frehley had exited the band.

So it was no surprise to see Vincent on the cover of Lick It Up. What was surprising was to see Vincent alongside Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Eric Carr…without their trademark makeup. It was a watershed moment in rock at the time. But in hindsight, it makes sense: 10 years in, lineup shakeup, pivot in sound. The Gene Simmons Marketing Machine saw an opportunity and took it.

Let’s Remember How Bad It Was When KISS Removed Their Makeup

To clarify, when I saw how bad it was, I’m not talking about their actual unmasking (un-makeup-ing?) on MTV with VJ J. J. Jackson. That was actually cool and pretty well-executed by 1983 standards. Jackson was, as always, a consummate pro and handled the band and their big moment well. It’s a fun moment to go back and revisit. Take a look.

Now the first sans-makeup music video? That’s a whole different story. To quote my buddy Rubin: “Lick It Up the song was good. Lick It Up the video was an unintentional 3:56 horror show.” What the hell is going on here? Why is that woman washing a manhole cover? Why won’t Gene stop leering at the camera? That’s not sexy, Gene, you look like a damn caveman! And why can’t Vinny lip sync?

Rappelons-nous à quel point c'était grave lorsque KISS s'est démaquillé

18 septembre 1983. Après 10 ans et 10 albums, KISS se démaquille. C'était terrifiant. Et hilarant.

1983 est une période de transition pour KISS. Ils sortaient de leur tournée Creatures of the Night/10th Anniversary. L'album Creatures of the Night a introduit une touche plus dure au son signature de KISS. Ce n'était donc pas une surprise de voir Vincent en couverture de Lick It Up. Ce qui était surprenant, c'était de voir Vincent aux côtés de Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley et Eric Carr… sans leur maquillage de marque. C’était un moment décisif dans le rock à l’époque. Mais avec le recul, cela a du sens : 10 ans d’existence, remaniement de la programmation, pivot dans le son. La machine marketing de Gene Simmons a vu une opportunité et l'a saisie.

Rappelons-nous à quel point c'était grave lorsque KISS s'est démaquillé

Pour être plus clair, quand j’ai vu à quel point c’était grave, je ne parle pas de leur véritable démasquage (démaquillage ?) sur MTV avec VJ J. J. Jackson. C’était vraiment cool et plutôt bien exécuté selon les normes de 1983. Jackson était, comme toujours, un pro accompli et a bien géré le groupe et son grand moment. C’est un moment amusant pour revenir en arrière et revisiter.

Et maintenant le premier clip sans maquillage ? C’est une toute autre histoire. Pour citer mon pote Rubin : « Lick It Up, la chanson était bonne. Lick It Up, la vidéo était un spectacle d'horreur involontaire de 3:56. Qu'est ce qui se passe ici? Pourquoi cette femme lave-t-elle une plaque d'égout ? Pourquoi Gene n’arrête-t-il pas de regarder la caméra ? Ce n'est pas sexy, Gene, tu ressembles à un foutu homme des cavernes ! Et pourquoi Vinny ne peut-il pas synchroniser les lèvres ?

Peut-être qu'ils devraient simplement se maquiller. Oh, c'est vrai, ils l'ont finalement fait. Dieu merci.

J'avais déjà vu ces coffrets en vente sur différents sites depuis quelques temps.
Cela fera plaisir à ceux qui aiment cette période !

Je les trouve différent, j'adore le solo d'exciter !

Lick It Up features the lineup of Paul Stanley (guitar, vocals), Gene Simmons (bass, vocals), Vinnie Vincent (guitar), and Eric Carr (drums). The album peaked at #24 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and #46 on Canada Top Albums and has been certified platinum in the U.S. and gold in Canada.

The limited 3LP picture disc edition features the original album on LP1 cut at 33-1/3 rpm, Lick It Up 12-inch single cut at 45rpm with B-sides “Not For The Innocent” and “I Still Love You” on LP2, “All Hell’s Breakin’ Loose” 12-inch single cut at 45rpm with B-side “Young And Wasted” on LP3, all housed in a numbered slipcase limited to 3,000 units worldwide.

The limited vinyl reissue of the 1983 Japan edition features the unique Japan cover and lyric translations wrap; Japan poster, sticker sheet and deskpad. Pressed on clear vinyl with black splatter, a first-ever premium tip-on gatefold jacket for the original album numbered and limited to 3,000 units worldwide.
