Bruce Kulick Band (KISS Kruise X) @ Stardust Theater (Inside the Norwegian Gem), at Sea Somewhere Over the Atlantic Ocean 11-2-21
November 6, 2021 by Gus
The last several years, Bruce Kulick has been a guest on the KISS Kruise. Like for the past 3 Kruises, Kulick was accompanied by Brent Fitz on drums, Todd Kerns on rhythm guitar and vocals and Zach Throne on bass and vocals. For the attendees, Kulick’s sets have been one of the highlights of the Krusies. On this particular Kruise, his band did 2 sets. We will focus on the 2nd set that was played inside the Stardust Theater for this particular review.
Opening up the night was the track “Exciter.” Even though this song was written before Kulick’s time in the band, it’s still a non makeup era song and the track hasn’t been played since the ‘Lick It Up’ tour back in early 1984. An exciting way to open up the set (no pun intended). The band dove into the deep end right away by tackling the heavy “Unholy.” On this version, Kulick’s licks were just as tasty from back on the Revenge tour (if you were lucky enough to see it). Throne handled vocals for this tune and all the Gene Simmons songs and has that deep dark voice that truly resembles the God of Thunder himself. Three out of the next four were songs off the ‘Asylum’ album. It was a surprise to hear “Radar For Love” as I believe this has never been attempted to be played live by KISS. Kerns has a high enough register to tackle the tough to sing Paul Stanley vocal tracks. Along with a dynamic voice, Kerns wins over the audience every time with this stage presence. He constantly thanked everyone for being on the Kruise. You can tell he is generally happy to be performing these songs live. The edgier “Thou Shalt Not” was brought back by the Kulick Band to be played again for this Kruise. It was first performed for the only time ever live back on KISS Kruise 8. So playing it again was twice as nice. A love theme medley from Kulick was up next with both “Radar for Love” with the only makeup era song in the set with “Makin’ Love.” The 2 bonus tracks off of ‘Smashes, Thrashes and hits’ followed. Again, these songs barley have seen the light of day. They both were fun to hear live. Some of the crowd reenacted the video pose’s Stanley made famous during Kulick’s performance of the song ;’Let’s Put the X in Sex.” KISS drummer Eric Singer took Fitz’ spot behind the kit for “Domino.” Kerns remarked, “That it was a thrill for him playing with half of the ‘Revenge’ lineup on stage.” One of my favorite non makeup era KISS songs is “Jungle.” It’s always a treat to hear this or any other song off of “Carnival of Souls” album. I believe the highlight of the set might have been “All Hell’s Breaking Loose.” I know lots of KISS fans been dying to hear KISS play this live for years so it was a pleasant surprise to hear Kulick’s band do it live for the Kruisers. Its been almost 30 years (November 24, 1991) to be exact that former KISS drummer Eric Carr lost his life to cancer. Kulick didn’t forget his former band mate and friend with a tribute to him. The band did “Carr Jam” in his honor. The continued with the ‘Revenge’ theme by playing a medley that consisted of “Paralyzed,” “Spit” and “I Just Wanna.” Of course, the set was ended just like we were back on the KISSS Alive III tour back in 1993. This is where Kulick would end the set with ahis rendition of the “Start Spangled Banner.”
KISS has a huge catalog of songs to choose from so it would be virtually impossible to do every song or even do as many deep tracks as the diehards would like to hear. So, having former guitarist Bruce Kulick on board doing a lot of the non makeup songs with a few other tunes scattered in, is really a win win for everyone who attends the Kruise. Let’s hope they continue to bring them back because along with KISS’ set, Kulick’s sets remain a highlight of the Kruises as well!
Setlist: Exciter (KISS song) Unholy (KISS song) Tears are Falling (KISS song) Who Wants to be Lonely (KISS song) Thou Shalt Not (KISS song) Radar for Love (KISS song)/Makin’ Love (KISS song) Let’s Put The X in Sex (KISS song) (You Make Me) Rock Hard (KISS song) Domino (with Eric Singer- KISS song) Jungle (KISS song) All Hells Breaking Loose (KISS song) Forever (KISS song) Revenge Medley: Carr Jam/Paralyzed/I Just Wanna/Spit (KISS songs) Star Spangled Banner (John Stafford Smith & Francis Scott Key cover)

Bruce Kulick Announces Las Vegas Show With Kiss Kruise Band
Matthew Wilkening Published: November 11, 2021
Bruce Kulick is bringing his Kiss Kruise band to Las Vegas for their first mainland show.
The group, which also features singer and guitarist Todd Kerns, drummer Brent Fitz and bassist and singer Zach Throne, will perform songs from Kulick's '80s and '90s Kiss era on Dec. 30, 2021, at Count's Vamp'd. Tickets are on sale now through EventBrite.
Kulick and the band are fresh off two shows aboard the 10th edition of the Kiss Kruise. Their sets have become highlights of the annual voyage, spotlighting an often overlooked phase of Kiss' career. This year's shows included extended tributes to Bruce's late brother, Bob Kulick, and former Kiss drummer Eric Carr.
"I am definitely glowing with pride over what me and my band put together, and I will go on record saying that it's not easy to do that material," Kulick tells UCR. "But I'm always striving to do the work that I know the fans will love. I'm devoted to giving that experience to the fans. Who better to keep the '80s and '90s Kiss alive than me? And that's my goal, and I have the right guys to do it with and certainly enough material to make the fans extremely happy and grateful."
You can watch Kulick's new video of the band performing the Asylum rarity "Radar for Love" - featuring a brief detour into the '70s gem "Makin' Love" - from this year's Kiss Kruise below.
Kulick credits his band for convincing him to tackle '80s Kiss material that he wasn't originally involved with, such as the Lick It Up deep cut "Exciter," which served as the opening number for both of his solo group's Kiss Kruise X shows.
"When it was first brought up to me by Brent, I was kind of like, Wait a minute, I think I know this song, and it's a good one, but what does it have to do with me?" Kulick recalls. "But then I saw the enthusiasm from Todd and Zach, and I thought, Yeah, that would be a strong and surprising opener. I was reading all the fan comments, and when I see them all herald the fact that I'm the one to keep the '80s and '90s alive, then why not go into Lick It Up? Why not look at Creatures of the Night? There's no harm in it, but I certainly don't need to do 'Cold Gin' or 'Detroit Rock City.'"
Although the uncertainty of a COVID-related postponement gave Kulick and the band less time than usual to prepare for their cruise performances this year, he's happy with how things turned out.
"It was a huge reward to actually have the experience and have just enough time with the green light to say, 'This is real now, we gotta get to work,'" he says. "Usually you never think that way, but that's the kind of year this way. I'm so really relieved that the cruise came off and that once again I was able to do what I'm so happy to do for the fans, and I think they appreciate the fact that I work hard to do it."
Details on VIP packages for Kulick's Dec. 30 Las Vegas show will be announced soon at his website.

Bruce Kulick On KISS’ Rock Hall Induction: “I’d Love To Be Inducted”
By Muharrem Doğan - December 11, 2021
Former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick mentioned Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s unfair selections, also touching on his former band’s behavior to him when they were inducted into the Rock Hall in 2014.
KISS is an American rock band that has been preparing to say goodbye to its fans with its ongoing farewell trek, the End Of The Road tour. Throughout its nearly five-decade career, KISS has released 20 studio albums. When the band debuted in 1974 with its self-titled KISS, they had released the latest album in 2012, named Monster.
Bruce Kulick was the lead guitarist and backing vocalist of the band from 1984 to 1996. When he was a member of the band, he contributed numerous KISS stuff such as 1985’s Asylum, 1989’s Hot In The Shade, 1992’s Revenge, the band’s live album Alive III, and the seventeenth album Carnival of Souls: The Final Sessions.
In 2014, KISS was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The induction was including the band’s four original members, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss, and Ace Frehley. Although Bruce Kulick was not an inductee, he was a guest of his former band KISS that night.
Recently, Kulick has opened up about his former band’s Rock Hall induction ceremony. At first, the interviewer of Rolling Stones mentioned the moment that KISS fans were yelling as Brooooce. According to the interviewer, he looked around for Bruce Springsteen when people were yelling as Brooooce but he then realized that they were yelling for Bruce Kulick. After that, Kulick showed off his gratitude for KISS fans and shared his pride.
“I was very pleased about that, and just to have Tom Morello mention my name,” Kulick says. “HBO caught a few great shots of me at the table with Tommy [Thayer, guitar] and Eric Singer, who were also screwed.
“They deserved it too. It was really tragic. Paul and Gene had a really hard line with the Hall of Fame.
“And like I said, I’ve embraced the fans so much. I’m very aware of my status and my KISS-tory and how much I’m part of that family. I’m very proud of it.” Bruce Kulick Admits He’d Love To Be Inducted Into Rock Hall As A Member Of KISS
Later then, the interviewer claimed that Rock Hall seems to have no clear standards, which means they are taking anybody with unfair selections. Answering the question, Kulick showed off his agreement with the interviewer and revealed what Rock Hall did wrong with the rock band Heart. He also admitted that he would love to be inducted into the Rock Hall as a member of his former band, KISS.
“There are other bands they’ve screwed as well,” Kulick claims. “It’s still wrong. I know Heart had tremendous success later on, but they only inducted the early Heart. That’s wrong.
“Those guys had multi-platinum records with other really talented musicians. It’s a travesty, but the fans know.
“I’d love to be inducted, but I don’t need that to have the acceptance of my fans. I know what I contributed to that band.”
Elsewhere, Kulick discussed whether it was positive that he was with KISS that night. According to him, he felt very happy when KISS invited him to the night. Detailing that night, Kulick revealed how KISS behaved to him. He also mentioned why his band did not perform on the night and screwed Rock Hall.
“I was very happy when Paul and Gene invited me,” Kulick continues. “They treated me like I was in the band. They flew me out, first class. They put me up at the same hotel.
“I was driving with the guys in what looked like armored Suburban limousines. We all walked in late, purposely I think, since they were trying to make a statement. I was team KISS.
“Even if they were showboating a bit about not wanting to play the game, and they were fighting with Ace and Peter, they certainly would have liked to have played.
“It should have been an unplugged performance with all of us. But the Hall of Fame didn’t get it, wouldn’t allow it, so screw them.”
Furthermore, Kulick had remembered that he always would hear things about Ace Frehley wanting to get back KISS. He had exampled the moment with Star Wars.
“I always would hear things about Ace wanting to get back in the band,” he said. “I wasn’t really very clear about how or when it could happen.
“But then again, I thought I had maybe three or five years of being in KISS, and then the whole thing would either implode or it would go back to what they were.
“I always make the analogy to the way that Star Wars was so big. And then there’s 20 years of nothing new from Star Wars. Then all of a sudden, I don’t need to tell you what they were able to do. They introduced it to a whole other generation.”

Bruce Kulick Says Fans Are ‘Hungry’ for ’80s and ’90s Kiss Songs
Matt Wardlaw Published: December 21, 2021
Fans of '80s and '90s Kiss have enjoyed a wealth of rarities and hits from the era live thanks to former guitarist Bruce Kulick's performances on the past couple of Kiss Kruises. He tells UCR that the Kiss Army is "hungry" to hear the songs, part of what he calls a "strong renaissance" happening with the material from his time in the band.
The Kruise performances have left those same fans hoping for a similar event on dry land. They'll get their wish on Dec. 30, 2021 at Count's Vamp'd in Las Vegas as Kulick's band, which also features singer/guitarist Todd Kerns, drummer Brent Fitz and bassist/vocalist Zach Throne, will play their first concert in a traditional venue.
According to Kulick, the Vegas performance won't go quite as deep as their previous sets, but fans can still expect some surprises.
In advance of the show, he checked in to discuss some favorite cuts selected by resident Kiss maniacs on the UCR team. Here are some excerpts from that conversation, which you can listen to in full on our YouTube channel.
"Love's a Deadly Weapon" From: Asylum (1985)
We were recording at Electric Lady [Studios]. Now, I’m officially the new lead guitar player in the band by that time. I would work with Gene [Simmons] and I would work with Paul [Stanley]. When you’re in the studio, you know you can make a lot of things work that you can’t do in reality -- or live [in concert].
Because you play and then you can punch in, combine tracks and flip over to the other channel. They were doing that a lot. So there were times, I was like, “Alright, I don’t mind you flipping the channel there, but that’s not very realistic what you just chose.” At times, when I was listening, I mostly was okay with what the final solo was [after it had been] comped.
But when I look back now, I go, “That was crazy!” I think they were trying to make me as wild [as possible]. You know, George Lynch used to be called “Mr. Scary,” because he is a scary guitar player. He has a tremendous ability with speed, tone, action and technique. So that’s what they were doing, they were making my solos kind of off the map. And when you go from ‘86 to 2021, that’s a lot of years there! So that is always something I look back at and tell a young gun, “Better you than me!” "King of the Mountain" From: Asylum (1985)
There’s a video where I’m showing how I did those riffs. I remember watching it with [my wife] Lisa, not that long ago, during the pandemic. I was just like, “Oh wow, that’s cool. So that’s how I did that riff, let me try that.” I did it a few times. Now, those riffs are nothing like I’ve played with Grand Funk Railroad for the past 20 years. It’s nothing that I do with anybody, really.
So all of the sudden, I was like, “Ouch, my hand doesn’t feel that good.” It’s just muscle memory, that’s what I was doing then, so it wasn’t that hard. But then when you get away from that kind of wild finger tapping -- I was interpreting Eddie Van Halen the best I could. You know, he was the king of that. But I was able to incorporate some things back then. I haven’t been using those techniques for the past years, so I was pretty impressed.
I watched a 1988 Crazy Nights guitar solo, live at Budokan, that we found on YouTube. I’m literally looking at the screen going, “Go, Bruce! Oh my God!” Lisa couldn’t believe what she was watching. I’m going, “This is great.” I love watching it and God, I don’t even know how I did it. Because there was furious playing. But you know, I’m in my prime [then]. Guitar playing is a bit athletic. I think everybody knows that. But I think I’m interpreting and hanging in there. You know, I’m still playing well. But I’d be kidding anyone to say that I can play as well I did back in the ‘80s. In the sense of speed and flash, that’s all.
"No, No, No" From: Crazy Nights (1987)
"No, No, No" was another really fun thing. Eric [Carr] obviously loved double bass drum and Alex Van Halen. As I said earlier, I was [almost like] a student of Eddie Van Halen, trying to emulate and use techniques I learned from him to be creative. Eric and I worked on the intro and brought it to Gene. It was Gene who started with the idea of “No, no, no, no.” In many ways, it was a bit of a tip of the hat to a Van Halen thing, with Gene as the singer and lyricist. I don’t think Paul really loved it, but we used to do it a lot. You know, he’d prance around on stage playing it. It didn’t turn out to be a bad song and we used it live.
I used to do a guitar solo on and then I’d come out and start “No, No, No” and we’d go into it after Eric’s drum thing with me. It was an important song. The very, very intro, wasn’t done for the demo. I think that might have been [Ron] Nevison saying, “Why don’t you just step out there, Bruce, and play. Just go for it.” I can see myself in the studio with my yellow banana guitar. That ESP always really had a wonderful, screaming tone. I was just flashing off some riffs and then of course, Eric joins me at the very end with a little bit of drums and then we kick right into this big double bass drum song. It’s a cool song. I wouldn’t be surprised if other people cover it eventually.
"Little Caesar" From: Hot in the Shade (1989)
That song was a long journey. Eric [Carr] wrote it in a few different ways. It wasn’t called “Little Caesar” at first. It started out as a demo called “Ain’t That Peculiar.” It was actually slower. I have all of the demos. He and I would flesh out a lot of stuff, because we had that great relationship from working on his Rockheads, you know the cartoon idea. We wrote other songs [at that time as well].
To get it on the Kiss album, it took [some work]. It was like, “It’s going to have to really fit the Kiss thing.” At first, it was more slinky and too [much like] Aerosmith and a little too mid-tempo. Then, he got involved with [songwriter] Adam Mitchell and Gene. We picked up the tempo and got better lyrics, writing a song that could [be related to] a nickname for him. It was like, “Hey, Little Caesar.” I do think, considering that it didn’t have a big stamp of Gene and Paul, it really fit well with the Kiss thing. I was so happy for Eric to have his own song on a record.
"Tough Love" From: Revenge (1992)
I was very grateful for “Tough Love.” I had this riff, the verse riff, that starts off the song. I presented that to Paul and Bob Ezrin, who I really enjoyed working with. They liked it and we started working on it. It was a lot of fun. I was always aware of the incredible songs and records that Ezrin was able to produce with Kiss. So for me to actually sit in a room and co-write a song, coming initially from a riff that I created, was quite a thrill. I was really proud of that.
But the only funny thing about the song -- I think it was that one -- we might have had to keep moving around the key, playing the riff in a different way. I could be confusing that with “Heart of Chrome,” but if it was “Tough Love,” obviously, Ezrin could always rely on me to transpose and figure out how to make it work. Because you know, if the vocalist can’t be comfortable with the arrangement that you make, you don’t have a song. It’s not going to be done. I do know that “Tough Love,” to me, that and “Heart of Chrome,” had a symmetry to it, so I’m just really proud of the fact [that I was involved with that]. It was the third track on the record and that always felt great too.
