Monday Rock City: Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Ace Frehley Talks Sobriety, Space Travel & Making Peace with KISS

Jamie Blaine
Wednesday, April 6, 2016

The first time I saw KISS was around second or third grade, just after my parents had split. I went to a K-12 school out in the sticks and there was a senior named Tony Gilley who wore a purple FFA jacket and had a full mustache and Greg Allman hair. Every afternoon Tony would work on his Monte Carlo in the school auto shop just south of the playground. One day he called me over and pulled a worn copy of Alive II from under the seat. “Check it out, Lil’ Blaine,” he said, classic rock blasting from his windows. “Ever seen anything like this?”

Tony opened the gatefold and held it before me. Superheroes wielding electric guitars and massive black drum sets towering into the night, bombs and blood and fireballs five stories high. It was total sensory overload, like a comic book come to life. Was this real? How could this possibly be real?

Tony closed it back shut and set the record in my hands. “Smudge the vinyl and that’s your ass,” he said, smiling. “But you can look at the pictures ’til recess is done.”

I sat against the shade tree and stared at that gatefold for forty minutes straight. There was one character, with space boots, cosmic bandoliers and silver stars around his eyes, who was pointing directly at me. Find your way, kid, he seemed to be saying. You can do anything you want.

The bell rang. I handed the record back. Nothing in life was ever the same again.

(phone rings…) Hello?

Hey, Jamie, how’s it goin’ today?

Whoa! Pretty good, Ace. You?

Ack! (telephonic cackling)

I just listened to “Spanish Castle Magic” off Origins Vol. 1. How’d you pick what covers to do?

Most of them were by groups that influenced me growing up as a teenager, the guitar players that influenced my playing. I’m really happy with the choice of songs and everyone else seems to think so too.

It’s a great set. Cream, The Kinks, Thin Lizzy – were there any artists before that?

It all started for me with the Beatles and Stones. The whole British Invasion took everybody by storm and that’s what really molded my guitar style. Clapton, Jimmy Page, Townsend, Jeff Beck and Keith Richards.

What was the first song you taught yourself on guitar?

Ah, man . . . I really can’t remember. I learned E, D and A chords. Back in the 60s, if you could play those three chords, you could play a lot of songs. (laughs)

You grew up Lutheran – your dad taught Sunday School and played church organ – what was that like musically? Was that influential too?

Absolutely. I sang in the church choir and that was my first introduction to any type of musical training, trying to understand melody and harmony. That was before rock and roll. But you know, that’s the story for a lot of artists, church music being their earliest influence and that was certainly it for me.

The big news on Origins is co-producing and performing a track with Paul Stanley. The rumor is that Peter and Gene might join you for Vol. 2. Free’s “Fire and Water” was a great choice for Paul, what sort of cover ideas would you have for your other two former bandmates?

Well, everybody’s heard that I tried contacting Gene first…

Right.

The song I had in mind for him was “Mississippi Queen” by Mountain. And Peter, you know, I think he’d be great on a Rod Stewart song. He’s got that raspy voice, right?

Any particular one? Faces or solo cut?

Man, there’s so many great ones . . . maybe “Gasoline Alley”? That whole album was great.

Start to finish. So is the plan to see how Vol. 1 does or is Vol. 2 a sure go?

Right now we’re wait and see. If Vol. 1 is as successful as we hope, there’ll definitely be a second volume down the road. I’m slated to go into the studio at the end of this year to start on another album of all originals.

Are you already writing for that record or pulling stuff from the past?

I’m always writing. Whenever I get inspired I turn on the tape recorder and catch any idea I have. Or I should say digital recorder. A lot of times I just record it into my phone.

You’ve always been big into studio gear – when you were doing this back in the 70s, would you have ever dreamed of the technology we work with today?

Oh, man, I had no idea. I never would have thought digital recording would change this business so much. A lot of people say digital doesn’t sound as good, as warm as analog and they’re right. But the flexibility that it gives me as a producer and songwriter is second to none.

So it’s worth the tradeoff.

Back in the 70s when we used audio tape, whenever we would edit something we’d have to get out the razor blade and splice. Today it’s just the click of a mouse. It’s made my life a lot easier.

Has your writing process changed since then?

Not at all. I have no formula. Sometimes I write from a chord pattern or a riff. Other times I’ll get a melody in my head or a lyric idea and just develop it from there. I never had any formal training so I’m a fly-by-the-seat of my pants kinda guy.

When you were working on your first solo LP, were those songs that you had written to pitch for KISS?

Funny you mention that, I was asked the other day why I didn’t have any songs on Rock and Roll Over. I was holding them back because I knew after that record we were going off to do our solo projects. So yeah, I didn’t introduce those to the band so I would have more material for my solo album.

How about “Rocket Ride” from the studio side of Alive II? Was that meant for your solo LP but something you had to give up to get that record done?

Uh . . . I don’t remember! But yeah, I believe that was something I came up with just for Alive II.

Ace Frehley News ! - Page 25 Ace-co10

I heard you guys had big money wagered on whose solo record would do best.  According to everything I can find – you won by a large margin. Critically, chart-wise, sales. Did that cause some jealousy?

They never acknowledged that my album did the best or had the biggest single. Gene, to this day, insists that his did better. (laughs)

But did you get the sense there were hurt feelings? Surely that had to have been a blow to their egos.

I’m sure it was! But they tried not to show it. They pretty much whitewashed the whole thing. We never even discussed it much.

Your first solo record smoked, you had the only stellar, true KISS cut on Psycho Circus with “Into the Void” and then you blew everybody away with Space Invader. Did the criticism from your bandmates drive you to prove them wrong?

I just do what I do. But yeah, when I feel like I have to prove myself, I’m usually a guy that comes through with flying colors. I’m the kind of guy that, if it’s third down and eight yards to go, ten seconds left  — then somehow, someway, I’m gonna make the touchdown.

Ace Frehley News ! - Page 25 Comic10
Comic

From the first KISS LP to Dynasty – that whole classic era — was five years. How did you guys produce that much great material in such a short amount of time?

Well, it helped that we had four lead singers, four guys who came up with ideas, four writers in the band. We had some really good producers that helped the process too. It was a lot of work considering we were always on the road as well. I’m not sure how we did it. I guess we knew we had to do it. We felt compelled.

If you had missed the KISS connection, what other band from that era would you have loved to join and been a good fit for?

I probably would have been a good guitarist for Aerosmith. I always felt if I wouldn’t have made it in KISS, I would have connected with some other group. I felt destined for it.

When I was a kid, this older guy at school showed me the Alive II gatefold and it blew my mind. It’s still mind-blowing. Bring me back to that tour, what it felt like to be on that stage.

Wow . . . yeah, it was pretty nuts. We had the most elaborate stage show of anybody in rock and roll at that time. It was mayhem. I had to really worry about where I might be standing during certain songs because flash pots were going off, the fire cannons were going to go off, big explosions and I was shooting rockets and all kinds of crazy stuff going on. So really, it was a staged concert – in many ways like a Broadway show because we had certain cues and so much pyrotechnics and special effects that we had to be aware of that timing.

Ace Frehley News ! - Page 25 Kiss-a10

Would you have to stay sober before the show just to hit your marks?

I rarely got drunk prior to the concert because I wanted to do the best show I possibly could do. After the show? That was party time. (laughs)

If the band had been more democratic in the late 70s – if you had been sober — how would you have changed things?

Ah, I really don’t know. I hate to say. That’s why I called my book No Regrets. I believe I had to make all my mistakes, have all my car wrecks, arrested by the cops – I needed to go through all that to get where I am today. I believe in fate and predestination. God had a plan for me.

Ace Frehley News ! - Page 25 Ace-fr14
Ace-Frehley-kiss

You’ve been clean nearly ten years now. What was that rock bottom moment for you in getting sober?

I got a call from my daughter, Monique. She said, “Dad, you gotta stop, you’re going down a bad path.” I looked at myself in the mirror and knew she was right. That was my moment of clarity. I knew I had to make a change and thank God for it. A lot of fans say “Ace, you helped me get sober. I figured if you could do it, I could do it too.” That makes my day.

Did you quit cold turkey or was it a process?

I had been to some AA meetings in the past so it wasn’t new to me. I knew I could get help and I knew I had friends there. So, yeah, I knew I had a support group in place, it was just a matter of utilizing them and reaching out. With the help of a 12-step program and the help of prayer and my family I get through one day at a time. I can’t believe it’ll be ten years this September. Miracles do happen, Jamie.

I can remember preachers coming to our church when I was a kid saying you guys were the devil. But I talked to Peter recently and he spoke of prayers and family and one day at time too.

For some reason, people think I’m Jewish! (laughs) I guess because Paul and Gene are, they think all of KISS is Jewish? I dunno. But me and Peter are both Christians and we’ve practiced that for most of our lives.

You seem to be the most  at peace with things.

When you change your life, you change the people that you hang out with. I don’t hang out with the party crowd anymore. I connect with people who are healthier in mind and spirit. I met a great gal seven years ago and she’s taught me how to enjoy life without drugs and alcohol.

The stories of your partying days are legendary. How do you enjoy downtime now?

We like travelling, hanging out on the beach. And casinos. I still like to gamble. Sometimes it’s just laying in bed, ordering room service and watching movies. I can still have fun. I always have fun.

You’ll be sixty-five next month?

April 27th.

What kind of healthy living does it take to stay active and on the road?

I don’t anything real specific. I just try to focus on a high protein, low fat diet, get some exercise and drink a lot of water. I take some vitamins but I’m not a vitamin nut or anything. I just keep putting one foot in front of the other. I don’t believe in anything to the extreme. I don’t eat a lot of red meat but I still love a steak once in a while.

I’m sure you get tired of the questions about KISS working together again but every fan wants to see their childhood heroes finish on good terms and end the story well. Seems like you’re in a place to help make that happen.

Nobody knows what the future might bring but yeah, I’m really optimistic.

Ace Frehley News ! - Page 25 E6119710

One last question: I remember seeing a magazine picture of you looking through a telescope in your backyard. For a kid guitar player who also studied the stars, that was pretty cool. Do you still keep up with astronomy?

Not as much as I’d like with all the projects I’ve got going right now, but yeah, I’m still into it a lot.

Me too. I’m eager to see what the successor to the Hubble brings when we get it up there in 2018.

Absolutely! We never realized how big the universe actually is. Now a lot of scientists say there might even be a multiverse – multiple universes, multiple realities. Black holes have been proven to exist. So a lot of things that were theories when I was a kid, even when you were a kid, have now been verified. The Kepler space probe is out there looking for earth-like planets and that’s really interesting to me. It’s a very exciting time.

You’ll be touring Origins through the rest of the year so we’ll look forward to seeing you out on the road. Thanks for your time, Ace.

Thank you for great interview, Jamie. You have a wonderful day.

EM25 - Ace FrehleyAce Frehley joins Eric in conversation. We talk about his early days with musical siblings, how his 1978 solo album set the stage for his eventual KISS departure. We talk specifically about Fractured Mirror, Alive II side four, Escape From The Island and early memories of Eric Carr, his sobriety, his extensive archive of unreleased KISS material from the 70s and 80s. And, of course we talk about his new covers album Origins Volume I and what’s next, Origins Volume II? (hint: yes with Deep Purple’s Space Truckin’)

Ace Frehley Looks Back In Pride: An Interview with Space Ace

—by James Campion, April 6, 2016

Ace Frehley News ! - Page 25 Timthu10
Space Ace Hits The Road With New Album Of Rock Classics And Talks Guitar Worship, Rock Star Team-Ups, Imposters And A KISS Reunion?

Far from the noise of the rock star life; the clamoring fans, the roaring crowds, the constant bickering with ex-bandmates in the press, a recently minted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer lounges on a couch in his suite high above Manhattan. He sips tea while blithely glancing at a muted TV across the room. This is Ace Frehley at 64; the fret-blistering Space Ace of KISS; the iconic harlequin outfit of 1970s fame, dressed rather casually in a blue T-shirt and jeans. An ace-of-spades locket, a reminder of his persona, dangles from a silver chain around his neck. He bends an ear to hear my questions and squints to remember the details of his answers, mildly clearing his throat, as if to conjure the wild mystery of his past. This is a genuine rock rebel in repose, a man at peace, but still very much rocking. Big time.

His latest album, Origins Vol. 1, sounding fat, bold and heavy, is due out this week, and he is very proud of it; the songs he’s chosen, beloved covers from classic rock acts, and his guest stars, not the least of which is former brother-in KISSdom, Paul Stanley. He is proud of having conjured it in his private studio in San Diego, where he now calls home, and his engineering and editing of many of the solos and vocal tracks on it.

Mostly, he is proud of his legacy in the pantheon of rock; the lineage of which is profoundly presented on Origins. Perhaps the most influential guitarist of his generation, whose unique shoot-from-the-hip style is often imitated but never duplicated, now pays homage to his heroes; Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and many more. And although it is difficult for him to wrap his mind around his impact in the wake of such musical giants, what does find its way through resonates. KISS was indeed a major rock spectacle. Its anthemic songs, burlesque imagery, and groundbreaking theatrical concerts turned the whole culture upside down. He was there; designed its logo and was the first to don its makeup—showing up at the annual New York Dolls New Year’s Eve bash in 1972 with silver hair and that striking Spaceman face-paint.

We spoke for a half hour about his music, his legacy and his love of the guitar, which took this fellow Bronx boy from a dead-end subsistence to the top of the world.

This is Paul Daniel “Ace” Frehley at 64, unplugged; honest, reflective and charmingly defiant.

I’m going to start with something I’m sure you’re bored with talking about, but I have to ask you; why a covers record now?

Well, actually it was the record company’s idea. To be honest with you initially I wasn’t that excited about the project, because I had just come off the high of the success of Space Invader, which is all originals except for a cover of “The Joker”. It was almost like, “Okay, I’m going to go through the motions and get this out of the way and then jump into the studio for my next real studio album.” But I gotta tell ya, man, once I started the process and started remembering the groups that influenced me, narrowing down which songs I thought were going to be best for the record, and then started the recording process; I really started getting more excited about it.

Then once I got Slash on “Emerald,” he was the first guest star that recorded, and Paul (Stanley) agreed to do it. I was trying to get a hold of Gene (Simmons) and for some reason Gene didn’t get back to me. But when Paul agreed to do it, I already had Slash in the can and I knew I could count on Lita Ford, because I already spoke to her about it last year, and John 5. I also spoke to Mike McCready a year or two ago and he said he was up for doing a track on my new record. So, all the ducks were in a row.

The last two weeks of the record I went up to L.A. I got John 5 and Lita Ford on the record the same day and that weekend Paul recorded the vocal for “Fire and Water”, while I was doing overdubs, and then he emailed the vocal back to us. I put a guitar solo on and we just mixed it. That was it. The whole process for “Fire and Water” was about four days from beginning to end.

How long did it take you to make the record?

Well, I started tracking last spring, but I went on tour last year to Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, and then came back and finished the record. Maybe the whole process took six months, leaving out the time I was on the road.

I understand you recorded some the tracks in your home studio in San Diego?

My place isn’t big enough for drums. We have a two-story townhouse, and I have a really great room with preamps and mics and stuff. I can do everything there but drums. There’s a studio in San Diego called Signature Sound and that’s where I did a lot of the basic tracks with drums. I tracked the drums and then I flew my engineer in from New York (Mike Everett), who I like working with since Anomaly, and we did a lot of the overdubs, and then I went up to L.A. to do the remainder of the overdubs. A lot of the solos I engineered, like “Fire and Water”, the intro solo and a lot of the guitars on “Bring It On Home.” What else did I do? I did the solo for “Till The End Of The Day” in my studio alone. I’ve really gotten good at Pro Tools, where I can actually engineer myself. The only drawback is when you are engineering some of the creativity goes out the window, because you’ve got to stay focused on what you’re doing instead of just thinking about creating. I prefer working with an engineer, but when I don’t have one around I can do it myself.

The record sounds very heavy and fat. Is that something you guys were going for or you just stumbled on?

No, that’s what I was going for. Warren Huart, the guy who also mixed Space Invader, he’s got all that stuff; SSL-board, and he uses old preamps. On some of my vocals he’s actually using real tape delay.

So, you did a lot of analog recording then?

Well, a lot of it was recorded digitally, but in the mixing and overdubbing process, we used a lot of analog equipment to achieve more of a vintage sound.

One thing I’ve read about you over the years, specifically your first solo album when you were still in KISS in the ’70s, which I love—it’s the only one I bought—is that you use many different guitars and various amps and effects. Did you do the same thing for this since you were covering different kinds of music from a variety of artists?

I use a lot of Les Pauls, but I like doubling Les Pauls with Fenders. I’ve got about a half a dozen Telecasters and a half a dozen Strats that I use, but in conjunction with different amps. I have a couple old Vox amps, a couple old Fender amps, and some old Marshalls. Last year I picked up a 50-watt Marshall I got in a pawnshop outside of Palm Springs. I picked up the head for $900. (laughs) I stole it! It was from the ’70s, so, you know, it’s the combination of all that stuff. Vintage microphones. Vintage preamps. Everything tube. That’s how I achieved that fat sound. But layering Les Pauls and Fenders are really one of my trademarks that I’ve been using since the ’70s.

When I saw that Mike McCready was joining you, because I know he is a big KISS fan, I was reminded of your solo on “She”, which is very reminiscent of Robbie Krieger’s solo on The Doors’ “Five to One,” and then McCready took that solo and used it in Pearl Jam’s “Alive”. It’s a great lineage. You guys ever talk about that?

Yeah, we’ve spoken about that. I met Mike several years ago, because my daughter was a big Pearl Jam fan when she was a kid. They took care of us at one of the concerts. Then I found out he was sober. I got sober. So we had that common bond. I ended up jamming with them at Madison Square Garden one night. We did…

“Black Diamond”.

“Black Diamond.” I jammed with them at Atlantic City at the Borgata Casino. I have a good rapport with him and Eddie (Vedder). I’ve wanted to get him on one of my records for a long time and finally it transpired.

I love the way the different vocalists change the style of each track, but you’re the constant throughout the whole record. With Paul, how difficult or how easy was that when you guys first got together? Tell me the whole process there.

We actually were never in the same room together. (laughs) Like I said, once me and Paul decided on which song to do, I was up in L.A .doing overdubs with John 5 and Lita and that same weekend Paul recorded the vocals at a different studio. We just emailed him the tracks. He did the vocals, engineered it, and emailed them back to us, and boom. Technology has changed the recording process so much.

In the ’70s, we had to carry around these bulky, two-inch thick reels of tape that only held two or three songs depending upon the length of the song. Big tape machines. Every time you wanted to do an edit was with a razor blade. Now with digital editing, it’s a dream. I mean, the sequence of solos that me and Slash did on “Emerald,” we had a dozen passes or more of solos and I pretty much put that together piece by piece; picked the best ones from each performance.

Did you start to realize while recording these songs where your influences came from?

I didn’t connect the dots in that way. It’s just that I thought back to all the groups that influenced me. I really wanted to do a Who song on the record, I just couldn’t get that together.

Which one would you have done?

I couldn’t decide. That was the problem! (laughs) Actually, towards the very end, prior to deciding on “Fire and Water,” Paul was kicking around the idea with me to do “My Generation.” I just wanted to do a song that was a little more obscure, like in the same way with the Hendrix song. I did “Spanish Castle Magic” instead of “Purple Haze” or “Manic Depression” or something off the first album, which everybody is more familiar with. So I kind of went down that road when it came to choice of certain songs, but I’m really happy with the end result. It always amazes me, because some of these songs, it was just so easy to do. It was effortless to me. I’m just amazed after the mixing process how strong they sounded, ‘cause I don’t really pay that much attention to detail when I’m recording. I just go for feel. But I work with some of the best musicians in the world, so that must be the secret. (laughs)

It sounds like you gave some real love to the songs, a respect to the origins of them. I’ll take “White Room” for an example. You achieved that signature wah-wah sound; that great (Eric) Clapton wah-wah sound throughout the song and then into the solo. Did you make a concerted effort to pay sonic homage to each song?

I had two wah-wahs in one of my boxes and me and my engineer plugged in both of them and they were way too noisy. They were old. The potentiometers were all dirty and it was making a lot of noise, so we ran out to Guitar Center and bought a brand new wah-wah, (laughs) a Vox wah-wah. I only did two or three passes of the solos, and out of those three passes, my engineer pieced together one solo. Everything kind of came together really… I’m still sitting here listening to… I still listen to the album almost every day. I keep hearing things that I didn’t hear from a prior listen.

I improvised all the solos on the record. I didn’t play the other people’s solos, note for note. I stayed pretty true to most of the arrangement. I ended up extending “Emerald” by redoing the second half of the second verse when I came out of the solo, which isn’t in the original arrangement. I actually like my arrangement better. (laughs) It kind of brings the whole song to an end nicely.

I had a lot of fun with the record. Sometimes when you have too many chefs in the kitchen it spoils the stew. I work very streamlined. In most cases, I’m recording with just me and one other person and an engineer. More than three people in a studio is a lot for me. I don’t like it that way. That’s how I did my very first, 1978 solo album with “New York Groove” and that form has always worked for me.

The thing I found researching my book (Shout It Out Loud—The Story of KISS’s Destroyer and the Making of an American Icon—Backbeat Books, Oct. 2015) was that speaking to Bob Ezrin and a lot of people that worked on Destroyer, and reading your memoir, you’re used to coming in, hearing the track, playing your solo, and bingo! In fact, you used to say you’d figure out solos, get to the studio, and everyone would be saying, “Nah, it’s not really…” and then you’d wing it and that take would be better. It would seem that nothing has changed over all these years.

It’s been a long time since I sat down prior to doing a solo and tried to figure it out before I hit the record button. I just empty out my head. It’s a lot easier to do four or five passes and then pick the best parts. Like I said, with digital editing you can pick the front of one pass, the middle of another, and the tail end of a third and piece them together seamlessly, so you really can’t hear the edit.

But you have to learn that to play it live.

Well, I memorize all my solos once I play live, because a lot of them are pieced together. (laughs) For instance, I’ll tell you what happened with the solo in “Fire and Water.” I did about fifteen passes after I got the lead vocal from Paul. He did a tremendous vocal. I thought it was amazing, one of his best vocal performances, and I wanted to do a really outstanding solo. So I did about fifteen passes of solos and I started trying to piece them together and it just didn’t sound right. So I took a break. I went downstairs and had a snack, went back up in the studio, and I just did one last take from beginning to end and that’s the solo! And that’s a long solo.

Also, the stuff that me and John 5 did at the end of “Spanish Castle Magic” is pretty amazing. John did an amazing solo in the second half of “Parasite.” I doubled the length of the solo. I played the original solo like it is on the first record and John came up with a great solo for the second half.

Why did you choose “Parasite” and “Cold Gin?”

The record company thought I should do a couple of KISS songs and I figure, “Why not redo the songs that I’ve written but didn’t sing?”

Ahhh. That’s what I thought.

Gene sang on those. At the time, I didn’t consider myself a lead singer and was really insecure about my lead vocals. I said, “Gene, you got to sing this.” And of course Peter sang a couple songs I had written over the years and in the beginning. But once “Shock Me” happened it was like the cat was out of the bag. I’ve been singing them in concert for years. I figure it’s about time I get them on the record.

Could you possibly pick a favorite song that you’ve written over the years? One you love to play live?

I don’t know. My favorite KISS song is definitely “Deuce.” It was the first KISS song I ever heard. It was before KISS was even KISS. When I went in to audition for the band they played “Deuce” for me and then I ended up playing a solo to it off the top of my head. Pretty much, I think those guys after that one song thought I was the guy. At least that’s what I’ve read in retrospect.

What about something you’ve written?

Something that I’ve written? I don’t know. So many songs to choose from. One of my favorite solos is the one in “Strange Ways.” I normally do my solos in the control room with the amp in another room, but “Strange Ways” was one of the few solos I stood in front of the stack. I stood in front of the Marshall stack with a tight set of headphones and that’s how I got that natural feedback. There is an intensity on that. The stack was on ten! (laughs) I almost couldn’t hear the track with headphones on, but it’s a pretty radical solo.

I have to say, now that I’m sitting across from you, the “100,000 Years” solo is one of the most melodic that you’ve written and you always seem to nail that, every time, even in the reunion tours. Have you played it since KISS? I love it. It’s so beautifully melodic.

Thank you so much. I forget about that song. I haven’t played that song in a long time. Maybe we should try doing that live. Maybe my drummer, Scoty, should sing it. He sings “Love Gun” and “Detroit Rock City”.

Who’s in your touring band?

Scot Coogan on the drums. He plays on nine tracks on this record and the other three tracks are played by Matt Starr, who did the drumming on Space Invader. Chris Wyse on bass. I’m playing bass on about four tracks. Richie Scarlet is on rhythm guitar for the tour.

The obvious question is will there going be a Vol. II?

Yeah, it was actually my idea to call it Vol. I. (laughs) I just thought it was a great marketing ploy and everyone’s going, “Is there going to be a Vol. II?” I go, “Maybe.” I have a feeling this is going to be a very successful record, because I think it has mass appeal. You don’t have to be an Ace Frehley fan to get off on some of the songs on this record. If the record does as well as I think it will, I definitely think there is going to be a Vol. II, but not before I do another studio record.

Originals?

All originals, yeah, and then maybe after that, maybe Vol. II. That would make sense.

I recently read that you would consider playing with KISS again.

I’ve always said that. I’ve always said, “Never say never. Leave the door open.” It’s really their call. I think it could be great. It would be a nice way for KISS to go out with a bang. You know, right now it’s really only half of KISS.

Right.

And everybody knows it. But like I said, the ball is in Paul and Gene’s court, but I would be open to the idea if it was presented to me in the right way. Sure.

I’ve been promoting my book now since October, and I’ve done a ton of podcasts and interviews and radio, and you’ve been the one member of the band that everybody gravitates to, perhaps because of your rebellious nature and the fact that you didn’t always buy into some of the more materialist KISS stuff; that you’ve been your own man. Do you realize how much people really love you?

I don’t. The other thing that people always say to me, “Do you realize the impact you’ve had on so many guitar players? The influence you’ve had?” It’s just not something I think about. I’m really flattered when people say that to me. But, yeah, I’m kind of like the cool guy. (laughs) Let’s be honest. That’s what everybody said.

But it was never about the money for me either. I always wanted to be respected by my peers and I didn’t want to give up my integrity as a musician in lieu of a show or merchandise or anything. To me it was always the music first, the show second. Invariably with KISS, a lot of times the reviews would talk more about the show than the music. It was frustrating at times, but I think at this juncture I’m respected by my peers. I don’t know if Paul and Gene really are all the time.

What are your feelings about two other guys wearing the makeup? I know they can legally do it, but to fans know that’s not Ace Frehley out there.

Prior to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction a lot of people thought it was me, believe it or not! (laughs)

No shit. I don’t believe that.

People that aren’t hardcore fans and people that don’t really pay attention to the inner workings of KISS, a lot of them weren’t even aware of it. They’ve always downplayed Tommy (Thayer). But I think with all the controversy that surrounded the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, that they decided not to play with me and Peter, a lot of people got hip to the fact that, “Hey, that’s not Ace in the makeup!” I’m telling you, a lot of people didn’t know. I used to get phone calls when KISS played in certain areas and somebody would say, “Hey, can you get me tickets? I want to go see you play.” I go, “That’s not me. What are you talking about?” I’m telling you. (laughs) The people that weren’t hardcore fans, casual fans, some of them didn’t know. They thought it might be Ace.

Well, does it bug you?

I still get checks. (laughs) Unlike Peter, I still do get checks.

Well, that’s good.

They pay me for the use of the makeup and I get checks for merchandise, but it bothers me. You know what bothers me more; the fact that the fans are upset about it. It’s gotten really silly over the last year or so when Paul or Gene make these ridiculous statements like, “Well, you know, once we can’t perform anymore, even we’re going to be replaced.” They’re trying to legitimatize the fact that there are two fake guys in the band by making a statement like that. But let’s face it, those guys making that statement is like Mick Jagger and Keith Richards saying, “Yeah, once we’re gone The Stones are gonna continue with two guys that look like us.” Give me a break. They will try anything to pull the wool over some people’s eyes.

But like you said, the true fans know.

There is only one real Space Ace.

That’s right!

Whataya gonna do?

“Whataya gonna do?” That’s classic Bronx.

Go feegya.

Album Review: Ace Frehley’s ‘Origins Vol. 1″

SHOCK reviews shock rocker Ace Frehley’s new album.

After releasing one of the best albums of his career, Space Invader, Ace Frehley headed back into the studio to record an album of covers as a follow-up. This is probably not what a lot of fans might expect.

Frehley, now light years beyond his days in KISS, has moved on. Even if the press won’t let him. There is always a story floating around on some blog or website about past and present members of KISS feuding. Every time I’ve talked to Frehley, he has spoken very fondly of his former band mates and has said time and time again that the bad blood is much worse when the press spins it. Many fans think it’s a constant hate fest between the founding members of KISS. Apparently, that’s not the case. On Frehley’s new album, Origins, Vol. 1, Paul Stanley provides vocals on the Free classic cut, Fire and Water. Frehley simply called him up and Paul was all for it. No drama.

The new album, due out April 15 on eOne Music, is possibly one of the most fun albums I’ve heard in years from any artist. The song selections aren’t some weird obscure archaeological musical dig; these are all tracks we know and love. The thing is, they have all been Aced. Like many songs he’s covered in the past, such as New York Groove and Do Ya, Frehley knows how to take a song and make it his own. This album simply serves to reaffirm that fact.

Let’s dig into the tracks.

The first cut, the Cream classic, White Room, takes on a thick melodic ambiance that was never this overt in the original. No matter the song, Frehley still sounds like Frehley. His guitar phrasing is as easy to pick out as the most well-known painting.

With Street Fighting Man, Frehley dips into the Rolling Stone’s back catalog again. Like the Dynasty classic cover, 2000 Man, Frehley grabs hold of a Stones classic and gives it his own flare. And again, just like on 2000 Man, it works perfectly. This version is immensely heavier and grittier but it never feels like he is recreating the wheel.

Next up is the Spanish Castle Magic from the classic Jimi Hendrix record, Bold As Love. This cover leans more toward the spirit of the heavier, live version of the song we have heard before on recordings like Live At Woodstock. John 5 makes his first appearance on the album on this track, lending his signature style to the mix. If we weren’t all familiar with the original, I think this one could almost pass as something Frehley might write on his own, the way he bends it so well to his style.

KISS fans rejoice! Only four tracks in, you get some reunion magic. The track with Stanley, mentioned earlier, takes on a life all its own. The rich, soulful vocal is not your typical Starchild fare. It is, for many KISS fans, going to be the biggest, brightest diamond on this album of gems. This is a chance to imagine a reunited KISS that has shuffled off the self-imposed musical requirements of its own legacy and just let loose. This one is worth the price of admission, kids.

The Thin Lizzy cut, Emerald, becomes something very technical and powerful while remaining very true to the original version. With Slash helping out on guitar, the dual guitar work is over the top. Frehley’s vocals fall right in line with Phil Lynott’s original style. Scott Coogan’s thunderous drum style is apparent and perfectly utilized in this track.

With Led Zepplin’s Bring It On Home, Frehley does something magical. He channels Plant and Page in a way I’d never have thought him capable of. This song is a thing of sonic beauty. Frehley sings lead vocals on the intro and then turns the lead duty over to drummer Scott Coogan, who absolutely knocks it out of the park. The guitar work is spot-on. Frehley keeps the spirit of Pages’s soulful licks intact and carries it in his own style. This song really showcases his blues ability like nothing we’ve heard before.

Lita Ford joins the Space Man for the Troggs sing-along classic, Wild Thing. Unlike the myriad of covers this song has endured over the years, this one seems less like a drunken afterthought sing-along and more like a true spirited tribute to the classic that it is. Frehley’s blistering solo fits perfectly and he keeps it short and sweet without killing the momentum of the song. Ford’s vocals are a nice surprise on the track. This one is a big ball of fun.

The aggression level goes to 11 with the next track, Parasite. The KISS classic, and Frehley live staple, is retooled as a heavy metal monster with teeth. It’s glorious. John 5 returns for another turn and the duo delivers one of the best versions of this song ever. Frehley’s vocals are as intense as he’s ever recorded and the slightly updated but mostly unchanged solo is perfect. This is the version this song has deserved for years.

Steppenwolf’s Magic Carpet Ride, one of the most fun, riff-heavy rock anthems to come out of the 60’s, fits perfectly into the mix on this album. This is a fun track and Frehley could easily have a new signature cover with this one. The blistering, chaotic guitar solo is reminiscent of his work on the KISS track, Almost Human. Oddly against the grain of the melody and yet a perfect fit.

With Cold Gin, the classic KISS track Frehley originally penned, we finally get a studio version of the song we’ve heard him perform many times live. Mike McReady helps to build a huge wall of sound on this one. This is song has always been Frehley the writer, at his absolute best. Simple, straight forward songwriting that has stood the test of time. Even with Frehley out of the band, this track was a KISS set list mainstay. The solo is true to the spirit of the way it has always been played, with slight variations that never sound odd or out of place, but invigorate this classic cut.

The Kinks tune, Till The End Of The Day, like the Stones’ cover Street Fighting Man, is quite a bit heavier than the original. This song seems more like a cover than some of the other songs that seem to melt into Frehley’s own established style and, to my ears, is superior to the original. The guitar solo on this one is is Frehley being true to his own sound, but making it fit the song in spite of that. This one shakes the tone of the album up a bit as we get closer to the end. That is not a bad thing.

Closing the album is something quite unpredictable. Yes, another KISS cover, but this time a track Frehley had nothing to do with originally. Rock and Roll Hell is a Simmons-sung track from the Creatures Of The Night album. Although credited and even featured on the original album art, Frehley didn’t play on a single track. This song is the real anomaly on the album (There is a pun in there for the Frehley fans). The guitar work is superb. It’s a really cool opportunity to hear what might have been if he’d been involved with the recording of the album. It’s a great closer to a great album.

All in all, this album will be enjoyed by Ace fans, KISS fans and fans of classic rock in general. It’s a perfect collection of tracks given a fresh coat of paint and a new slant.

Concernant le titre "Rock and Hell"...
"... le travail de guitare est superbe. C'est vraiment une belle opportunité d'entendre ce qui aurait pu être s'il avait été impliqué (Ace) dans l'enregistrement de l'album (Creatures of the night). C'est un final énorme pour un album énorme."

J'ai toujours regretté l'absence d'Ace sur cet album de Kiss qui est l'un de mes favoris du groupe !!!

ACE FREHLEY: 'I Don't Hang Out With The Party Crowd Anymore'

In a brand new interview with The Weeklings, original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley was asked what the "rock-bottom moment" was for him that helped him get sober nearly ten years ago. He responded: "I got a call from my daughter, Monique. She said, 'Dad, you gotta stop, you're going down a bad path.' I looked at myself in the mirror and knew she was right. That was my moment of clarity. I knew I had to make a change, and thank God for it. A lot of fans say, 'Ace, you helped me get sober. I figured if you could do it, I could do it too.' That makes my day."

Frehley went on to say that he relied on friends and family to get him through the toughest period and help him stay on the right path. He explained: "I had been to some AA meetings in the past, so it wasn't new to me. I knew I could get help and I knew I had friends there. So, yeah, I knew I had a support group in place; it was just a matter of utilizing them and reaching out. With the help of a 12-step program and the help of prayer and my family, I get through one day at a time. I can't believe it'll be ten years this September. Miracles do happen."

Frehley also talked about the the ever-important step of finding new friends while he was early in his recovery from addiction. He said: "When you change your life, you change the people that you hang out with. I don't hang out with the party crowd anymore. I connect with people who are healthier in mind and spirit. I met a great gal seven years ago and she's taught me how to enjoy life without drugs and alcohol."

According to Ace, maintaining a healthy lifestyle on the road is essential in sobriety, especially early sobriety. He said: "I don't anything real specific. I just try to focus on a high protein, low-fat diet, get some exercise and drink a lot of water. I take some vitamins, but I'm not a vitamin nut or anything. I just keep putting one foot in front of the other. I don't believe in anything to the extreme. I don't eat a lot of red meat, but I still love a steak once in a while."

Ace Frehley On Reuniting With Kiss: ‘Anything Can Happen In The Future’

The guitarist dishes on his new solo album, teaming with Paul Stanley and his favorite Kiss memory.

Ace Frehley didn’t have to look too far to find musical guest stars for his upcoming album, “Origins Vol. 1.” He just went through his phone’s contact list.

“It was pretty easy. Everybody that performed on the record was a personal friend. It was one phone call to their cell: ‘Is this weekend OK for you?’ And everyone showed up,” the original Kiss guitarist told The Huffington Post.

Those friends included guitarist Slash, rock guitarist/singer Lita Ford and Frehley’s longtime buddy, Kiss vocalist Paul Stanley.

They lent their talents to Frehley’s album of covers filled with tracks special to him, including songs by The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and The Kinks. Stanley performs on “Fire and Water,” originally done by Free. But that wasn’t the first song they had in mind.

“I gave Paul a call and I told him what I was doing. I said, ‘I’d love to have you on a song,’ and he said, ‘That sounds like fun.’ We were kicking around a couple of songs and we were thinking about maybe doing ‘Little Wing’ by Derek and the Dominoes. That one didn’t work,” Frehley said. “And then Paul suggested ‘My Generation.’ And I’m a big Who fan, but it’s such a recognizable song. I strived to do songs that weren’t the No. 1 hit of the band. And ‘Fire and Water’ is always a song we wanted to track … He was thrilled and I’m thrilled … He’s not singing high like he usually sings with Kiss songs and it shows a little different side of him.”

It marked the first time Frehley and Stanley appeared on the same studio recording since the 1998 Kiss album, “Psycho Circus.” Not surprisingly, the pairing has led to plenty of questions about Frehley reuniting with Kiss.

“It hasn’t been discussed. And everybody’s talking about [it] — but Kiss. All of a sudden, me and Paul do one song together and that’s the green light,” said Frehley.

Though he didn’t rule anything out.

“Look, anything can happen in the future,” he said. “I always leave the door open. It’s a wait and see. If it happens, it would be wonderful. And if it doesn’t, my career is doing better than it’s ever done, and I’m having a lot of fun!”

Frehley played with Kiss from its start in 1973 before parting ways with the band in 1982, only to rejoin the rockers later for reunion tours and new music. But it was the time period during the late ‘70s that really stands out to him.

“The first thing that jumps into my mind is the weekend we did three nights at Madison Square Garden, sold-out,” Frehley recalled. “Coming from New York, to play the Garden … I think that was ’78, ’79.” It was a roller-coaster ride. I always had the feeling I was just holding on ... It was crazy. And I was a party animal on top of it, so I was kind of my own worst enemy.

No longer a party animal, Frehley, 64, has been sober for 10 years and says he feels great. He has a tour in the works and is even mulling a follow-up to his “Origins” album, due out April 15.

“It was my idea to call it Vol. 1, which will leave people to speculate that there’s going to be a series,” he said.

FNM Exclusive: Rock Legend Ace Frehley Names Best and Worst Part of Having Crazy Fans

By FOX News Magazine | April 7, 2016

A rock legend like Ace Frehley has more than his share of crazy fans, but you'd be surprised how often that works to his advantage.

On Frehley's upcoming covers/remake album "Origins, Vol. 1," the former KISS guitarist found that plenty of his fellow rockers — being die-hard fans of his work — were more than happy to help re-record Frehley's favorite rock songs and KISS classics.

"I re-did a song by Thin Lizzy called 'Emerald,' and I was lucky enough to get Slash to trade off lead solos with me," says Frehley in an exclusive interview with Fox News Magazine. "That was the first VIP guest I had on the record. And then subsequently, I got Lita Ford to sing and play on 'Wild Thing' … I got Mike McCready from Pearl Jam to play on 'Cold Gin' … and John 5 from Rob Zombie's band, he played on 'Parasite' and he played on 'Spanish Castle Magic.'

"And I called up Paul Stanley about six, eight weeks ago, when I was preparing to put the final touches on the album, and I asked him if he wanted to be involved with a song," adds Ace. "He said, 'Great, it sounds like fun!'"

Being a rock star isn't always fun and games, though. As Ace tells FNM, his craziest fans "pop up" when he least expects — and they make his life interesting, to say the least.

"Sometimes they follow me into the bathroom," recalls Frehley of his most aggressive admirers. "I'm trying to take a leak, and the guy's standing there with a pen!"

Judging by Frehley next comments, however, we can't imagine it's all bad.

"Once I came back from a show, and there was a girl in my bed," Frehley says, smirking. "I'm not going to say anything more about that. I'll leave that to your imagination."

ACE FREHLEY On Reuniting With KISS – “Anything Can Happen In The Future”

The Huffington Post caught up with original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley to talk his upcoming covers album Origins Vol. 1 and the possibility of reuniting with his former band.

About the going back to KISS, Frehley said, “Look, anything can happen in the future. I always leave the door open. It’s a wait and see. If it happens, it would be wonderful. And if it doesn’t, my career is doing better than it’s ever done, and I’m having a lot of fun!”

On the new album, KISS frontman Paul Stanley joins Ace on Free's hit "Fire And Water”. This collaboration marks the first time that Ace and Paul appear on the same studio recording since KISS' 1998 reunion album Psycho Circus. Other guests include Lita Ford singing and playing lead on The Troggs staple "Wild Thing”, Rob Zombie guitarist John 5 playing guitar alongside Ace as he sings his classic KISS composition "Parasite" for the very first time, as well as Jimi Hendrix's "Spanish Castle Magic”, and Pearl Jam's Mike McCready also plays guitar with Ace as he finally sings his KISS Alive! mainstay "Cold Gin”. "White Room" is also an iTunes instant gratification track, meaning fans who pre-order the LP on iTunes will receive the Cream cover song instantly.

Ace Frehley News ! - Page 25 2950519824  Ace Frehley News ! - Page 25 2950519824  Ace Frehley News ! - Page 25 2950519824

A part "I Was Made For Loving You" ; je ne vois pas...

Il y en a eu certes quelques-uns (I love it Loud, Lick it up, ...
